As the year wraps up soon, I want to thank God, 2024 and Youku for bringing me the masterpiece called The Double,…
OK, I have a semi-serious reply now haha. The Double has taught me that flirting with the right man can be so much fun to watch. That two people could convey so much with mere glances.
It has also taught me that some people would give up their sense of self to be powerful and after losing that self and hurting their beloved on the way, they could deceive oneself that the one they hurt most would actually come back to them. In my real life experience, I have actually seen this happened, but never had the lightbulb moment that SYR gave me about self-deception and delusional beliefs of said experiences. I'm a Doublet forever!
I am not into historical serious dramas much.... preference is rom com....but this one stole my heart.... everything…

Sometimes a drama just isn't for the person. Maybe it's not the kind of drama you enjoy since you didn't get it…
I really don't know what you like, since you dropped so many dramas LOL. Do you like Korean contemp dramas? How about one with very little romance but interesting tension? It's an absolute beast of a revenge drama, but not sure if it's your cuppa tea. You don't seem to be interested in romantic romance stuff right now any way.
I agree. This drama is worth watching. I felt so connected watching The episodes ended so fast whenever I watched.…
Yes, I meant that, heh. She was an interesting character but they never allowed her to grow after being saved by Duanwu. It was like one of the writers forgot about that part and kept her on the same stage with no development. Then, someone else suddenly remembered at the end and went, ummm...let's just give her some heartache and she will repent, TADA.
It's called shorthand writing, which can be found in Douyin short format CEO dramas. NOT a high budget one. Of all the female characters, Cui had the greatest potential and someone failed. Sob.
LOL. OK, I'll shuddup now. I know the story ain't about her but the Pearl Girl. But if there WERE a story about Tribute Pearl Girl, maybe....

Oh, I was very sad about our girl and boy. I just did not feel an ounce of sorry for Cui and wished she was more punished. Many cried buckets over her and Wu's love, etc. and talked about her redemption arc. Well, if you let me rant a wee bit--there was no freaking redemption arc. She was always screaming revenge and doing the wrong things and then boom, she suffered her loss and suddenly, that was her redemption arc. Pfft. Okay, end rant ;).
As a foreigner I find her pretty in an unconventional way. She got nice body proportions (slim with a nice hip-to-thighs…
I'm sorry, I wasn't being clear. I'm not saying it's YOUR fantasy. I meant it as a projected fantasy of the Chinese aesthete. You like what you like and I'm not objecting to it.
I'm saying that the Chinese aesthete (or fantasy) is being extremely fair, tall, with big double-lidded eyes and a pointy chin and unfortunately, it's possible to do so now with plastic surgery and other chemicals and that's why many, many liuliangs and movie stars go that way. It's very extreme PS now, compared to the 70s and 80s, when men didn't go that route, but today, they do.
I'm really not arguing with you. I'm just telling @Hiko (whom I talk to a lot) and she knows how it is, that there is a "beauty" "high" bar one must achieve to get fame. There are exceptions, but it's getting rarer in the liuliang and k-pop business. K-pop is even worse because the aesthete is looking like an anime, so you see these creatures (big, big eyes, lots of thick long hair, very pointy chin, polished skin), beautiful as they may be, that you won't find among the crowd in Korea. You'll find them only on K-pop and social media influencer channels and through filters.
The actresses you love are my loves too, so no complaints here. But they too are also trying to achieve the same look through makeup or otherwise when they're doing their drama or putting shorts out on Douyin/social media.
It wasn't my point to disparage anything you say or like. My point to @Hiko was that I find WJY one of the more normal looking pretty actresses around. She still looks the same as she did years ago when she started and she also looks "normal," for lack of a better word. Or old-school pretty. Or someone I could see in a Chinese crowd.

I'm Chinese, so I actually find WJY's features more authentic Chinese than the other considered very beautiful actresses. The aesthetics valued by Chinese citizens and international viewers are actually "fantasy." That's why so many of them have plastic surgery or chemically enhanced features--to look like that fantasy. It's the same with South Korean k-pop--so many of them have PS to look like anime characters because that's the aesthetic fantasized by the populace.
whats good about this drama to be rated 8.9? i watched till ep5 and I think they are manipulating the rating by…
Sometimes a drama just isn't for the person. Maybe it's not the kind of drama you enjoy since you didn't get it by Episode 5. There are other great dramas out there this month! Happy drama watching!
Absolutely agree with you about the Ji Bros. Stupid director, trying to be artsy wuxia.
It's a trend of wuxia. Has been happening since the 70s. Open endings too. I remember pffffting at the same type of endings at TVB Cantonese historical dramas.
Wuxias are famous for endings with deaths. Although The Double isn't technically real wuxia (too artsy), it has elements of it and is also a revenge drama, a sub-genre.
OK, but what has that got to do with the drama? If you don't like the drama just because you find the actress…
No, I'm not knocking anything you said. It was just a passing observation. Certainly, I was very happy with WXY's Su Guo Gong's looks in this drama. It was just an unexpected post to read that one did not like the drama based on just one actor's looks.
Like I said, there were many critiques about her age that had stopped some from liking/believing in the story, but you're the first that I've come across that went straight for the actress' looks. Again, not judging you, just wanting to understand your posting about it. Peace to you too. And, you're still going to miss a very, very good drama if you didn't watch it just because of that one point :).
