if you'll reread my comment, I was speaking about them as a COUPLE. I never single out one person. Them together are both intelligent and inventive. I find this a weird thing to be so argumentative about, since the entire show is about how they find ingenious solutions to problems that can't be fixed by following the rules. that's the definition of street smart.

yes, street smarts refers to being cunning, i.e. coming up with creative ideas to problem solving.
book smart means traditional intelligence.
as a couple, they're portrayed as being both: cunning but also well educated. they come up with sneaky plans to solve their problems (street smart), but they're also well read and articulate (book smart)
I really think the lead couple aren't as smart as the show makes them out to be. We're supposed to believe they're both book smart and street smart enough to find their way out of any problem, but they also wrote a contract about how fake their marriage is and signed it (lol). And they couldn't even just sleep in the same bed for the sake of just keeping up appearances. And I distinctly remember Fang Muyang telling Fei Ni she can only read in the warehouse, but of course she carried the banned book home because why not?
Almost every time they get in trouble, it's their own fault for making some truly dumb decisions. At some point, I don't even blame Feng Lin cause they're partly responsible for always sabotaging themselves.
oh my god yess. I think Xiaodan and Xia Lei are so much better for each other. Xiaoman should be with someone who wants a small, simple life and doesn't care about having a big career
I like that Xiaodan finally realized how unfair their relationship is to Xiaoman. He has no real ambition for his own life, but he's burning himself out trying to keep up with her. He would never let her go, so I'm glad she's self aware enough to end things herself.
I really dislike xiaoman for having no brain or common sense he gave away all the money he made without thinking…
oh my god I was coming here to rant about the same thing. like, why give the money away?? it's so foolish. he could have used that money to come back and build a new life, or even give it Mr Ding if he didn't want it for himself anymore. Xiaoman just doesn't have any real goals for himself or any life direction; everything has always revolved around following Xiaodan. he's kind of hard to root for at times.
I agree that Fei Ting is a dolt, but I'm sick of his wife, who is just as bad as her rotten family. Forcing him…
this is the best analysis of Lin Mei I've seen since the show began. I don't think she's intentionally cruel, she's just internalized her family's judgment and feels the need to prove herself and her marriage. It doesn't excuse her actions, but it helps us understand her better.
What's the male equivalent of a manic pixie dream girl? cause Muyang is the perfect example: cute and cheeky when he's courting you, but frustrating as a husband. giving her boss a fake TV coupon is honestly a dumbass move cause that's her boss, dude. you could have just had a conversation instead of trying to trick her
I am an American watching from the US and really enjoying the series. I do find it rather melancholy though and…
Me too! I'm on ep 14 so far and it's just heartbreaking. His friends already know who they are because their parents were so invested in helping them grow up. Xiaoman has been drifting his whole life, always living for the moment, never really with a plan for his future. It was fun when they were kids, but now he's falling so far behind and it's painful to watch. As much as I want to dislike Xiaodan's parents, I can't because I understand where they're coming from. If I had a daughter, I would also want her to be with someone who was clear about their future. Xiaoman has a lot of growing up to do to be able to catch up ... but luckily it's a drama, so we know he will. It's just sad that this happens in real life as well and some of those people stay left behind potentially forever.
I understand why this isn't more popular internationally (non-idol drama), but it's really freaking good. It tackles such important themes while always keeping the story centered on the trio. You think you're just watching 3 kids grow up, but you end up pondering questions about community, legacy, how to adapt in a changing world, and the relationship between a government and its people. The pacing is quite slow, but every episode is so rich and meaningful that you can't really complain that any time has been wasted.
While this is honestly a great show full of substance, I feel a bit let down because of the synopsis. It's like I keep waiting for the show to "start" because what I'm watching (up to ep8) isn't what was promised.

But the progress is slow cause I'm also watching all the currently airing dramas for February.
