The jailing and torturing of the doctors and professors were short-sighted at best. Youthful enthusiasm and political idealism are not terribly practical at stopping loss of blood or curing diseases. It took a special tenacity for this family to make the decision "to live" in the face of so much tragedy and heartache.

To correct the comment below, Kinoshita was only banned until the end of the war. He would go on to direct starting in 1946 and continue making movies until 1988.
