It was a very calming film watching people so deeply committed to their beliefs and exercising them in a way that wasn’t harmful to others. While there was hope for personal merit the whole purpose of the pilgrimage was to pray for others. And the scenery was stunning.

This silent film is missing the first and last reels of film. Fortunately, the intertitles fill in some of the missing story and how it resolves in the end.

MAX has the film divided into two parts just as it was originally released. If you watched on YT or elsewhere. Part 1 ends when Oishi’s wife and two children leave him as he watches them go.

The total run time is around 4 hours for the whole story. This is the first part released in 1941. MDL also lists the second part released in 1942. MAX has them broken down into two parts if you are looking for a way to watch separately.

I’ve seen a couple of other movies that referenced the books. I have one of the dramas bookmarked on YT and the books are in my Amazon wishlist. I bounce between countries and genres so much I’m behind in my Condor homework. 😄. I promise to get on it after my marathon! 🫡

I’m not a fan of comic sidekicks in general so “comically obnoxious” makes me very cautious about starting this drama.

The tournament began to feel like Bloodsport for kids.

This is one of his few roles that I've seen where he seemed more vulnerable. Ah, the phonebooth scenes. :'(
