This isn't the best investigation because you don't know what the detectives learned from their investigation but for some reason the drama shows you like they have solved the mystery with hard work....lol Of course as viewer you know what happened because it was revealed in the last 3 episodes but it wasn't clear how the detectives know it.
The story behind the mystery was quite interesting. But the writing wasn't the best for investigation genre (more in the spoiler below). Some of the characters were not explained, as viewers are assumed to already familiar with Odd Taxi, which is a setback for those who are not. There were some comical moments in the drama too so you might still be able to enjoy this even with incoherent writing and abrupt scene cut. Overall an okay drama if you pretend this isn't an investigation series. 7/10
Overall a good drama as far as the time leap theme is concerned. The mystery part was engaging but if you watched many of this genre you could possibly see through it. Few episodes felt slow than others, but thank god I didn't see any plot holes, which is a good thing for this kind of drama.
Strangely, the spin off was a bit more interesting than the whole series in terms of the writing. Although entertainment wise I would rate both 8/10. So if you've watched this, I recommend you to check out the spin off as well.
I think this remake is better paced than the Anne's version. But somehow in the middle it felt like original writing instead of Ikeido's writing. Some of the cases were hard to grasp due to the overly compressed details. The main case wan't that interesting but overall it made you curious. Also not a fan of the visual direction of this drama that was too pretty face oriented. They even have Kaname Jun for the older role....lol
They purposely wait for the child actor, Nagao Yuno to be born to make the live action....lol She's the perfect Pinoko IMO...I can't imagine other child actors in previous years (Shida Mirai, Ashida Mana, Yoshikawa Ai) would fit the visual. Haven't watched the old version so not sure which actor played Pinoko.
Overall good selection of cases for this time live action. It makes you feel like you want to see more after watching this. It would be great if they plan to make the series version before the kid gets older, but I doubt about it.
Pretty straight forward from the synopsis. You will get what was advertised. Overall an okay drama. You won't feel like you wasting time watching. The mystery part was also satisfying. I also don't see anything wrong with the ending. Although this drama could have been better should they focused more on small details. Entertainment value 8/10.
I guess this movie is needed to know the fate of characters from the series. Overall entertaining but the pace during the second half could have been better.
First part out of 4 of the Season 1 of the new remake of Onihei Hankacho. Watched this out of curiosity while knowing the fact that the remaining parts might not be available online. Overall an okay drama, just right for the first introduction of the series. The story was nothing extraordinary but the selling point of this remake is the acting performance from the actors especially Matsumoto Koshiro and his son Ichikawa Somegoro.
This looks like episodic format drama but it's not. The focus was on one main case but there will be side cases to solve in between, but not in a way episodic drama does. Very gripping story with smart MC. The last episode was satisfying but a bit too much technical dialogues that need time to digest.
I'm happy that many people enjoyed this drama which is a hard thing to achieve for Japanese stuffs. I personally think this drama is good in many aspects especially the acting and writing. I have no issues with it, but in terms of entertainment value I would give this 8.5/10 (which is amazing but not superb). Maybe I got used to overdramatic and over the top dramas that I find this one a bit too calming for my taste....lol
On a different note, I loved the minimal makeup approach (which make the characters feel like real people) and also fascinated with their obsession with eating (whether normal food or exotic food) in every episodes.
This is a must watch if you loved the series and love Kuno Totono's peculiarity. Overall an entertaining movie with more focus on understanding the mystery instead of solving it or guessing the culprit.
I agree with everything you said up to the last 3 lines. >they didn't explain why the father or mother couldn't…
They didn't explain the dad's injury. Many things left unexplained regarding the deaf presentation.
I guess I phrased the sentence wrongly. I wasn't referring to the individual difficulty, but simply the reason Cheong Ah didn't carry the notebook/paper as if the production wanted to use it to play with the viewer emotion. Then they even made her lived in that evil family. Her life should have been a lot more easier because her family was wealthy.
S.Korea in my opinion wasn't as bad as a country in the 90's regardless of how it was shown in their drama. They were always considered the second after Japan in Asia in many things back then. Even they have organized major event like Olympics in the 80's. If we are talking about China, then yes the 90's China was way isolated than now.
1. I think many have answered this but it would be annoying to talk if you can't hear yourself. The problem with this drama is, they didn't show the possibility of using a hearing aid. They also didn't explain what injury resulted to Yi Chan losing his hearing.
2. It's pretty obvious the stepmother and her kids will take over everything. I don't think they need to explain this.
3. Se Kyeong was the daughter from relationship of Music Store Owner and actress. The Owner didn't know about pregnancy until the mother died. He didn't claim the daughter because he thought Se Kyeong would be much happier with adoptive parents. They did explain this but I did not remember in which episode.
6. That one is ridiculous! Just a plot of convenient obviously.
7. Yes
8. Just a side plot of convenient. They just want to earn viewers sympathy towards Eun Yu.
I agree with most part of your review. As a person who has been living in the 90's (that actually around the same age of teenagers in this drama), the depiction was too "make-believe", shallow, and lazy. The Thai's movie, Back to The 90's has done better in this regard IMO.
The band music and culture was another aspect that this drama is lacking. You got it spot on with their music sounded like a studio recording and the worst part is, the songs sounded more pop-ish instead of band-ish. It's unfortunate that they started off with MC learning guitar and magically became master in very short time, but then the choices of music did not reflect a person with guitar solo mentality.
The portrayal of band needs to recruit super legendary guitarist was a joke too. None of the band members ever shown they love and respect to music. They just auto-magically able to play without any musical influence and roots. The overly long focus on them doing the merch, makeup and t-shirt was too superficial for a HS band performing for school festival. I guess the writer must have been confused rock band with boyband....or perhaps that's how it was in Korea at that time?
There were some illogical aspects in the disability representation in my opinion. First how would a deaf person open a busy restaurant without an interpreter. Secondly, I don't think Korean gov doesn't have aid and incentive for the disable people. Thirdly, why Cheong Ah (in the 90's) doesn't have a notebook/papers ready so she can easily communicate with people. Finally, they didn't explain why the father or mother couldn't use hearing aid. While they conveniently overused "pager" in the drama, are they trying to fool the viewer saying 90's was so stone-age that disable people suffered throughout the period?
TBH this drama has way too many problems in the writing. I personally don't think it deserved the high rating but the new present won't bother Eun Gyeol that much IMO, as this is what he was dreaming for, i.e. his band is now super popular and managed by big label, his family live happier than before, his burden was relieved since they are super rich now, and he found the love of his life.
On the 1995 people not recognizing Eun Gyeol (including his parents); this is actually a proof of how poor the writing is. They should automatically reminded with the past as soon as Eun Gyeol grown up (maybe around 16 yo, way before the time slipped Eun Gyeol went back to the present).
Haha I liked Eun Yu too. I think she gave colors to the drama.
It's a supernatural mystery with Edo settings. The drama was not bad but not life altering at the same time. The setup looked like it's ready for future sequels or even a series.
This was a light drama with manga-like plot development and characters. Well I know it's manga adaptation but still... There were many 3 kingdoms references in almost everything they do, so it's a bummer if you're not one the fans. First few episodes were a bit weak but it got better after that. The production effort was amazing though, with interestingly vivid color-palette usage in the cinematography, as well as their dedication in writing all the songs used in this series.
