When I watched this the first time I was like nah although I liked it I won’t be rewatching it but I ate my words big Time because I am currently rewatching it. I’m rewatching solely for the purpose of watching Hu Ge bring Mei ChangSu to life with his loyal band. Genius strategic mastermind who plays chess while other are playing checkers is the best way to describe the character known as Mei ChangSu/Sir Su/Su Zhe/Lin Shu. The way he brought all this personas to life was a thing of beauty and incredible to watch. He portrayed being sick to perfection, I actually would have believed he was really sick. His impenetrable stares were so chilling, it’s actually one of my favorites things about him, even with his weak body, the way he walked into the several mental battles he faced was nothing short of majestic. He was the perfect character. I loved the childishness of Fei Lu, it could have gone wrong with being too much but it was just right. He was ferociously protective of his Su-gege and I loved him for it. Special shout-out to general commander Meng he was such a delight to watch and he was also extremely ferocious in his protection of Sir Su. I absolutely loved the dedicated devotion from Sir Su’s entourage towards him, it was incredibly heartwarming. One of the reasons I said I wasn't going to rewatch was because if I’m being honest I didn’t really care too much for Xiao Jingyan’s character, he was quite annoying and self righteous. I inherently dislike goody2shoes self righteous people and Prince Xiao Jing turned crown prince/emperor was that to boot. But I love me a good scheming/revenge series so this was right up my alley so I’m not even ashamed to say I ate my words and currently rewatching. I highly recommend. It’s brilliantly written and masterfully executed in both directing and acting. Kudos to the cast and crew
This is not a series I would ever rewatch cos I struggled to even finish this even though it was barely 15mins an episode, this was definitely not my cup of tea. I dislike woe is me characters and goody2shoes characters the most and in this series Cha Si Won is the definition of woe is me. Everybody in the world has stuffs they are going through. You were fat when you were young, news flash so was a lot of other kids. FYI I am not discounting his “tough” childhood but don’t go expecting people to be walking on egg shells around you when everyone is going through their own shit. It’s hilarious (and not in a good/funny way) that Cha Si Won is narrating his childhood trauma to Hyeong Da Un in ep6 of how people were always judging him before getting to know him but insert *eye roll* that’s exactly how Cha Si Won turned around and judged Hyeong Da Un after their first encounter . I really didn’t care for this at all. I wish I didn’t watch it. I strongly DO NOT recommend.
I absolutely adore Kang SeoJun aka Son Woo-Hyun. I am an absolute sucker for open and honest people. And if you check open and honest in the dictionary you will probably find Kang SeoJun under it. This was so heartbreaking on so many levels, I know a lot of people would not have the emotional or even mental bandwidth to tolerate the dismissals and nonchalance that Han displayed, I know I couldn’t for one, but that’s what made me love Kang, he’s strength in withstanding all those emotional assault is sad but commendable (I think one of the reason he held out hope was when he saw he’s shirt on the bed when he drove all night and visited Han after he finally found out where he’s been). Son Woo-Hyun you were perfection in this role. Hope to see more of your work.
This series just felt so good to the heart. I believe in this epic forever type of love but unfortunately in this time and age it’s very difficult to have that IRL because people are selfish and not truthful in what exactly they are looking for once you start communicating with them, so for the foreseeable future I am going to be living vicariously through romantic (“you are the only one for me in this world, you are the only one I will ever love in any lifetime I live, epic love”) dramas, like this one. It really gave me all the right feels and boy was our couple really adorable. Shin Ki Tae reminded me so much Kang SeoJun from To My Star, both of them are so handsome, cute and adorable and best of all they were so refreshingly honest/open about what they wanted and how they were feeling every time. There is zero deceptive bones in both their bodies. (Actually Han Ji Woo asked Kang SeoJun in one scene that why must he be so honest about everything and because of that honesty he can’t resist him, that scene really resounded with me). I fell in love with Kang SeoJun and while I still prefer Kang SeoJun to Shin Ki Tae overall, Ki Tae sure did give Kang a run for his money in my heart. Overall a fast watch that was delectable and heart fluttering
Honestly this was 1⭐️ for me, the ending was a bit rushed IMO but the last 2eps gave off lots of good feels. I liked the leads relationship so because of that this like 5⭐️ for me even though I think it should be less because it was dragging and boring for most of the 16eps. After watching the whole series, I couldn’t see what the hype/rave reviews was all about except the fact that most of the viewers seem obsessed with the two MLs especially with Lee Dong-Wook hence the inflated ratings. This is nowhere near a 8.0 rating much less 8.8 rating, IMO. I swear to God the delusional castle that most K & C Drama fans have built does host a lot of idiotic morons. People were literally wailing and crying in the VIKI comment section. How the fuck are you wailing and crying in the comment section about Kim Shin putting his hands on the Grim Reaper in Ep13 (let someone kill your whole fucking family and let’s see how well you react when you are face to face with the person, I’m sure you will hug them because OMG *insert sarcasm* they are so handsome and you even got to be friends with them before knowing). This is a fucking tv series you moronic retards. He was not actually trying to kill ya”alls precious Lee Dong-Wook. Like WTF. K & C Drama fans will be all up in their feelings when their so called popular and handsome actors are MLs. They will stay bashing the FLs of these actors (deluding themselves with the rhetoric that she can’t act, she’s whiny/clingy or because they feel that she’s not good enough to costar with their precious Male actors) but the MLs are always beyond perfect and above reproach and can apparently do no wrong. These male actors don’t even need to do much or have any sort of great personality, they just need to be “handsome & hot” and viola they are all perfect in all their ways. As a lady I love me some handsome actors and I can appreciate the good looking ones but some “fans” I don’t even call them that, I call them delusional moronic retards take it way too far, little wonder the poor actors/actresses and idols in China and Korea can’t publicize their relationships because of the unstable people that claim to be their fans…. FYI to the above delusional moronic retards, all your revered male actors won’t read your comments, even if they somehow miraculously do, they won’t care for your trifling thoughts and opinions of them and their FLs, especially when most of them are actual friends with said FLs. So keep wasting your useless time bashing all their FLs in the VIKI comment section, VIKI, Youku, IQIYI etc review sections, here on mydramalist and any other tv series review sites, you will end up just being the one dying of anger and frustration while both FL and ML smile to the bank. People were bashing this shows FL that she was childish and immature, I’m like she’s literally 19yrs old in the show and the MLs were 939yrs and 300yrs and were both acting childish with each other but surprise surprise nobody was bashing them, instead they will praising them, saying how they had such chemistry and people were shipping them (pure insanity). This level of obsessive delusions and inability to have rational/logical thinking because a guy is so “handsome”, lemme tell you, it’s borderline mental. Very unstable behavior. And what makes it worse is that, It’s mostly females that you see bashing this FLs. It’s really horrible what women do to each other just because they want to praise and idolize a “handsome” guy that doesn’t even know they exist. Very very sad indeed
Before I start, I watched Story of Yanxi Palace then I watched this, I did the same thing again with the rewatch. I rewatched Yanxi & right after rewatched this again. Having watched both twice I still prefer Story of Yanxi Palace majorly because IN MY OPINION Wei YingLou is the greatest female character ever made anywhere in the world. Wei YingLou is everything i am. She’s so fearlessly badass, she’s extremely loyal to the people she loves and most of all is not shackled by useless emotions that have been designed & perpetrated to keep women below. She’s cunning and ruthless and that’s one of the reasons I love her. I love you forever my most iconic Imperial Noble Consort Wei YingLou aka Empress aka literal QUEEN MingLan was ruthless when she was pushed to a corner and she’s super smart and calculating, she knew to guard her heart, and I really liked her character a lot. This series is the definition of character development. The main characters were so fleshed out (this is the most fleshed out character driven series I have ever watched) we knew who they were, what their motivations & desires were, their short comings and strengths. Our power couple did turn out relatively well and “normal” when you realize that the both of them came from families that were competing for the worst family of the year awards. Gu’s family ended up winning the award in a landslide.. The only thing that irked me was the we didn’t get to see how Molan was treated upon entry into her matrimonial home, I badly wanted to see the shock/heartbreak on her face as she entered and saw a very pregnant concubine chunke (Sue me I’m petty like that). Also the demise of Gu TingYe’s stepmom was so anticlimactic. I feel she died so easily. I wanted her to experience real long drawn out pain/anguish but alas it wasn’t so, like I said sue me, I’m petty like that. People need to stop telling women when and how to feel anything. A lot of men in this show & in the real world will be dating/sleeping with different women and not love any of them. When the women are now seeking for their attention, these women will be called clingy (especially in C & K Dramas) but when a man falls in love with a woman she is automatically expected to reciprocate those feelings, like she should be grateful and happy that he loves her, (that was one the foolishness that pissed me the hell off in the comment section while watching on the VIKI app), the audacity of women to not reciprocate a man’s feelings simply because he’s handsome & loves her, gosh the travesty. *insert sarcasm* I do thank God I wasn’t born in that era because I know I wouldn’t have survived it, so in my opinion, the good/kind women of that era are the real MVPs. If indeed they had such evil scheming women then, damn, too bad, women supporting women have been a farce since beginning of time & I can’t see any end to it. At least that time they were not dressing it up prettily like they are now. #MeTooMovement my ass. All that being said, shoutout to MingLan’s girl squad they were literal goals. I loved each and every one of them. The best scenes was when the sisters fell down (happened at different scenes) Gosh I watched those several times. Nanny Chang’s rant to Madam Kang that caused her fall was so epic, it was a masterpiece. To end this, it was a really good series and I will be back in a few years to rewatch again. But for now adios to my scheming power couple…..
After watching and reading the novel, I can see why people loved it and are obsessed with it. I’m in the minority in this. I did like it but I didn’t love it. The only thing I loved was Xiao Zhan’s portrayal of Wei Wuxian. It was beyond perfection. He was so incredibly beautiful to watch. I am of the opinion that he’s better in Historical drama than modern drama because that Oath of Love was not good at all IMO. For me Word of Honor was 1000times better than this. I really did like Wei WuXian/Xiao Zhan but Wen Kexing/Simon Gong has my complete heart.
This series was spicy, it was hawt, it was steamy and it was every BL’s fan fantasy come to life. That being said for some reason I didn’t love it as much as most people seem to do. I liked it enough but it didn’t grab my heart the way TharnType, KinnPorche & CutiePie did.
I was so looking forward to this, it started off so strong and good. The swimming/death story arc was good and drove the 1st part of the series. I didn’t like UWMA and dropped that half way (the incessant weeping of Pharm was such a turn off, I get the trauma and all but it was way too much for me to endure), you have trauma but won’t go seek help from a professional so you cope by crying A LOT. So that wasn’t my cup of tea , so I didn’t care much about Pharm&Dean here either. Could have done without their presence. As for Win&Team, they were great until the last few episodes. Team now turned into Pharm with the incessant crying. The level of cringe that was the last few episodes was intolerable. So freaking disappointed with how they finished this. The skinship wasn’t even that great to save this. I expected so much especially from Win. They took him from being too cool for school (which was his appeal) to being way below average.
Wei YingLuo is the greatest Asian TV character ever made and IMO one of the greatest TV character ever made anywhere in the film Industry in the world. OMG what a woman, what a one army avenging warrior, what a wrong righter, what a QUEEN, take a bow my QUEEN. The thought of watching 70eps was daunting to say the least and I put it off for so many years because I honestly wasn’t a fan of the hairstyle for the men and the overall ambience of it. But I kept reading rave reviews and decided to take the leap of faith and oh boy am I so glad I did. It was so damn good I wished there was 70more eps. I would have watched even if it was 200eps that’s how good it was. Her tunnel vision in enacting revenge and righting wrongs even minor ones was a thing of beauty. There is nothing I hate more than goody2shoes characters and best believe there was absolutely none of that here. She was who she was and made no apologies for it. A lot of viewers wanted her to end up with Fu but I’m with the minority, the Emperor was way more suited for her. Only the most powerful man in the country was good enough for our powerful protagonist. Her targets knew she was going to come for them and boy did they all try to get her before she got them, but they were playing checkers while my girl was playing chess, so it wasn’t even a fair fight to start with. That thunder scene, I have just two words for it Gloriously Epic. The only part that was weird for me was the 2-3 years they spent apart. With the way the emperor was in love and obsessed with her I was shocked that he was able to stay away from her for that long. I guess maybe it’s because he still had lots of women in the harem so it was easy for him to endure the separation. I am actually currently rewatching it. It really is soooooooo good. Please watch if you are thinking about it after reading this review.
My love for Wen Kexing is unexplainable and indescribable. Gong Jun aka Simon Gong thank you so much for bringing Wen Kexing to life and embodying everything he was supposed to be and so much more. You deserve all the accolades and stardom that comes from such a powerful performance. It’s not often I love an actor/actress as much as I love the character they are playing and vice versa. This is one of those rare moments. I love Wen Kexing so damn much especially in all his Ghost Valley Chief glory, I have rewatched so many time and plan to keep rewatching. I also love Simon so damn much and I can’t wait to watch all of his upcoming projects. Keep soaring high my majestic beautiful man.
