Since I have finished the entire drama, to me, the biggest villain is Princess Yicheng. In the beginning when…
A show like this always needs a villain. She seems the best candidate. Thrown from one Khan to the other, she harboured lots of hatred and bitterness. She is a very convenient contrast to Li Chang Ge, to help us appreciate Chang Ge more. Chang Ge was also very bitter. But she learned to forgive, learned to see the big picture, and move on with life, rather than being consumed by the desire for revenge. Forgiveness provides the healing and closure, so that we can have the happy ending in episode 49, and HE not just for her and Asun, but all the other major characters in this drama. Mimi died. But, she died a heroine, not in shame nor in vain
Much has been written about on-screen chemistry between our two leads. Or even between the 2nd leads, the 3rd and fourth couple. Those of us who are here, are more than a bit pissed when others claimed there is no chemistry between the two leads. So, what exactly is on screen-chemistry?
I googled and found this definition: Chemistry is that magical connection that actors create on camera that makes us want to keep watching.
Did Dilreba and Wu Lei have that magical connection that makes us want to keep watching? For sure. On screen, we can see the connection when their eyes meet, when they hold hands, when they hug, etc. Magical connections need not be made by connection of the lips, tongues or other more intimate body parts.
When they connect through whatever gesture the two actors are comfortable with, and communicated to us that they truly love and care for each other, and made us want to keep watching this drama, the two actors have done their job. Sparks can fly, without two wires touching each other. When the electricity is so strong and powerful, sparks can jump across those wires.
In those episodes they were not together, we can still see chemistry. From the countless times Chang Ge wrote Asun's name at the Taosist sanctuary; and the equally countless times Asun affectionately caressed Change Ge's hairpin while searching for her.
It is still rather subjective, though. Those who do not like Dilraba or Wu Lei, or both, will still insist that there is no chemistry. They may 'see 'and 'hear' whatever we 'see' and 'hear', and still walk away with a different conclusion. Their biases very likely led them to a verdict they already formed in their mind, regardless of what they sense on the screen.
Should we lose sleep over this? I think not, and we should not. After all, they are not going to lose any sleep over what we say. They are entitlled to their opinion, and we, ours.
How can Reba and Wu Lei have such an amazing chemistry! All dramas that i have watched there was always chemistry…
I think they are both great actors, so they are both able to portray their roles really well. Also, if you look at the BTS during filming and interactions after filming, it is clear that they are really comfortable with each other. Maybe they have very similar personalities? Also, the fact that Dilraba is a bit older than Wu Lei probably helped. Some of the looks he gave her are looks of romance mixed with admiration and respect for an older actress.
i second what @katelyn arshi said above, to put your insight in the review section, so it's not being buried by…
I think I will, as soon as I figure out how to do it. I am really new to this sort of stuff. The TLB did not just entertain; it educates and imparts good values. For sure I will write a formal review and encourage others to watch as well
Thank you for your comment. You make a lot of us become more understanding towards this show. And of course none…
And I learned a lot from many of the comments made by many of you. You have watched far more Cdramas than I do. It is a great learning community, coming together to share a common love for TLB

100 % agree with you. What a set of marvelous cast members! In the midst of the pandemic last year, many still wearing their masks off the set, they gave us their best
One of the best cdramas I have watched in a long time, and I have watched plenty of those.
Good pace (faster moving than ELOD), great chemistry between the two first leads (which we can perceive just from the way they look at each other, without any need for bedroom scenes) . Also good chemistry between the 2nd leads too! And between Mujin and Mimi.
Just about every character in the drama played a useful role, big or small. Some could be used to make the drama less 'heavy' (the crown prince, maybe?). Good use of background music, to arouse various emotions like sadness, fear, anger, love, etc. It is never boring, as action scenes are alternated between those that are dialogue heavy.
Is TLB perfect? Probaly not. Is there a perfect cdrama out there? Probably not. If we analyse great cdramas of the past frame by frame, episode by episode, the same way we analysed TLB, we will probably find plot holes too. Yet, we have no problem pronoucing those dramas 'great', 'masterpiece'. If so, we must do justice to the TLB and say that this too is a masterpiece, no less.
What started as motivation to take revenge, turned into a story of forgiveness mixed with regret, when Li Chang Ge realised that Li Simin did not kill her mother, and was in fact doing everything in his power to preserve her life.
There is also forgiveness, between A Sun and Sheer. Between Du Ru Hui and Li Chang Ge, and between Li Chang Ge and Hao Du
The director and producer took some risks, I think. The animation, in place of many live battle scene. That lovely COVID-19 danc. Out of place, perhaps, but unforgetable.
If we see animations used in future battle scenes in historical cdramas, we must thank TLB. This drama blazed the trail for other directors to follow. If no body tries it, the TLB will forever remain unique in Cdramaland.
Who was the star of the show? Li Chang Ge, of course. This drama was about her. The first scene of the very first episode started with her, running away from her pursuers, and the last scene of the last episode ended with her, at the grassland, at peace with herself and all that had transpired in her life. This was her story, her journey. Some of you wanted Asun to be with her in that last frame. I felt there is no need. since romance was never the main focus of this drama (nor in the manhua?). We should be delighted to know that the one who loved her and whom she loved, is only a flight away, and falcons are great flyers!
She grew, during those 49 episodes, and we grew, along with her. To understand that forgiveness is always better than hatred and revenge; to make peace, is always superior to killing each other. She made mistakes, sure! Who does not?? Whether we are 15, 25, 35 or ever 45. Her mistakes made her more relatable, more believeable, more human. And her learning journey serves as an inspiration for ours.
I love this comment section. The people in here are simply amazing. Countless hours spent explaining stuff to those who may not understand Mandarin, or some of the historical backdrop. Viewers who do not like this drama are always treated with respect and civility, and not told to go take a hike. Or shot with arrows as vicious and stealthy as those ordered by Li Jing in episode 33.
We will move on and watch other dramas, but of course. But TLB will always have a special place in many of our hearts.
