Some who read this are going to think me odd...very odd in fact, but I teared up at the opening. The beauty of rural Japan just moved my heart. The rain, fog and hills where just overwhelming. This film is a slice of heaven to me. Ichiko is a treasure. Her beauty is obvious, but it's her actions, knowledge and hard work that melt my heart. I would honor and show my eternal gratitude to woman such as this. She is a prize greater than anything on earth. I watch in deep affinity at her every action. Stumbling upon this film is a little bit like stumbling upon a piece heaven. Ugh. I can't say enough.
If any of you are familiar with the Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli. This movie is a tiny, tiny bit like the barely known Studio Ghibli work 'Only Yesterday'. In that we have the main protagonist leaving the big city and going into the country to live and harvest the fields. You ALL should give 'Only Yesterday' a look.
Ok, back to this stunningly simple, yet enchanting and engaging little film.

I have only read the comments, a few reviews. I looked it up on Wikipedia too. This is one incident. What's heartbreaking is that it is almost a certainty that something like this is happening somewhere, LOTS OF PLACES ACTUALLY, in any given part of the world. Children being abused, raped, starved, looked in cages or closets, the list goes on. The sad reality is it will forever be present. This is the one thing above most everything else that infuriates me. I truly do wish these acts could be perpetrated on those who did these things so they could feel the horror, terror and pain. I'm going to try to watch this movie...ugh.

I almost agree. I did until I saw Reply 1988, but this drama is so wonderful, sweet and engaging. I bought it on DVD to own forever!! Check out my review if II want to see just how much this touch my heart and soul. Most wouldn't think of it as deeply as I did, but I couldn't help it. Oh Ha Ni is perhaps the sweetest character ever.

Ok. I'm starting episode 6. Tell me I'm not completely stupid - lol. Tell me others had trouble keeping up with all the names and faces and time leaps and so forth. I ardently sticking with it. I love it, but a wee bit frustrated that I can't seem to keep the names and faces sorted. I'm hoping if I stay with it it will be ok.

Fujiki Naohito is not in this drama! Lol it's funny how it says he has a supporting role but he wasn't in a single…
Yeah I just started season 3.

Daimon Michiko's role, to me, is so classic Japanese...at least anime-wise. The loner who walks and journeys alone, but can kick the crap out of everyone. Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D, even Ninja Scrolls - to name a few. I know there's more and I know that list dates me terribly - lol. Buts it's a motif used in Japanese art over and over again. She comes in with unmatched surgical skills answering to no one and always above reproach. It's fun though and cool a woman and her anesthesiologist are a one two punch besting all the men leaving them in their wake. Enjoyable drama.

It is so funny you point this out!! I JUST started season 2. I saw Fujiki and thought - I KNOW HIM! He had to be in '1Litre of Tears' and of course I'm right. Then I come back to Doctor X season 1 to write a comment about it and see him in the cast. I thought to myself, 'Hmmm, I don't remember him being in it.' Maybe I missed him - lol. Then I read your comment!

I have not seen any of these other youngsters work, but I do know that I first saw Kal So Won in Take Care of Us, Captain and thought she was adorable, but when I saw her in Miracle in Cell #7 she stole my heart. I thought she was wonderful in the part and was so incredibly adorable.
