What's up with the prince?why is he turning into villain?
He’s too insecure, spoiled, sheltered and not clever. Just a very straight forward boy who thinks he’s the center of world and lashes out at anyone who crosses him or his. No natural benevolence to speak of. He could be better, but his dad doesn’t take the time to train him (too little time, thinks he’s too young etc) and his insecure bravado blinds him to others advice. Its like someone sat down and created the perfect tool for LZS’s brand of manipulation. Show actually improved him a bit. He’s more innocent, trusting and less vicious. What he did to the yamen was nothing compared to his cruelty in the book.
How did LZS be imperial tutor? And why does he already seem to have a relationship with Fan Yu? Didn't he grow…
They explained in the show but not very well. Basically LZS leveraged his control over Yangzhou ( surrendering and swearing fealty to the new emperor) so the emperor had to appropriately reward him otherwise the people in charge of other provinces might not risk surrendering to the new dynasty which would be bad. Our simple prince who sees the world in a very self centered black and white way sees a dude “give up power” for the good of the nation and thinks he’s righteous. Fan Yu has 0 ability to see through people. Which is why he couldnt see why the yamen might be a bit tough on GJ and instead just saw them “bullying” his friend. The emperor knows what he has in LZS. In the book he let him come to the capitol so he and his allies wouldnt be making mischief elsewhere while the emperor rebuilt the country. Also GJ suggested giving the prince more than one tutor. So YS was a tutor. So was GJ and a couple of other people. But by than the prince trusted the person telling him what he wanted to hear: LZS. And even in the show LZS is good at saying what the prince wants to hear while reinforcing his frustrations and resentments. The prince’s insecurity leading to him always wanting to prove himself to his dad (in ill advised ways) is true to the book. However, his character is a little less hateful in the show. Im almost hoping he gets a redemption arc. His ending in the book while justice in some ways was super horrifyingly sad.
how is the romance? are the kiss scenes/skinship etc?
Its very slow burn in terms of kissing and consummation. Has an epic pay off kiss to all that waiting. They do very quickly (before episode 10) become comfortable cuddling and what not. Its very much inexperienced lovers figuring out their way.
They have a forced marriage that neither wanted. Its very much a slow paced bickering friends to inexperienced lovers story. They best part is how well they communicate. Also for a slow burn it has very good pay off.
The romance is the best part. Its a mistaken forced marriage, slow burn, honest communication, bickering friends…
If they follow the book, he doesn't allow any criticism of his son. Its his only son from his beloved deceased wife. He pampers and protects him while not being around enough because of his work to guide his character. He wont hear any criticism towards his baby.
He’s very similar to our ML except his life has been their cultures version of hell: abandoned by his family…
In the book LZS made deals with all sorts of foreign and domestic powers. Yes its the uncle who was allies with King Liang. At the very end, LZS found out the truth as his dad stabbed him through with a sword while LZS stabbed him back. They died together with dad saying he loved the mom, would have loved LZS if he’d known about him and he only left her because her father (LZS’s grandfather) killed his brother. (Which is why uncle annihilated the Luo family after his love had passed away) GJ buried them together with LZS under the name the uncle said he would have named a son.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question...but what was the significance of LYR banging the drums? I read somewhere…
Not a dumb question and your instinct is correct. Basically as long as the drums are going telling them to attack it means the city hasn’t fallen. So keep fighting.
Angry people who have been powerless tend to incorrectly conflate authority with control.
The desire for revenge comes from some very real traumatic experiences. His only mistakes are who he thinks is responsible and sacrificing everything he values for his revenge. Hes a very scorched earth kind of vengeance seeker.
