It is understandable that YJS was just trying to make the variety show more fun and challenging. But remember…
That's not an excuse to violate the rules of the game. As you yourself said, "it will ruin the show's message". As I mentioned before, the memories he gave those kids was one they'll always talk about how YJS decided for himself who gets replaced in the bonus round which resulted in them not getting the rewads they wanted.
It doesn't matter if they received consolation prizes off-camera, they will always remember that if their choice of who to replace, they would've gotten the prizes. So, yes, as you've said, "it is all about making memories", "so…" YJS indeed gave them memories to talk about.
In addition, in that same episode, the celebrity guest volunteered to pay for the prizes. The hosts told him it is not allowed. Even if off-camera, they wouldn't give them the prizes.
Consider this. If they are indeed giving consolation prizes off-camera, or actually giving the real prizes off-camera, why is it not a single soul leaked it yet? NDA? Afraid of getting sued? No.
Do you seriously think no one would've noticed they received gifts far more than what was shown in the episodes and they kept silent about it? Do you seriously think they would lie when their neighbors, friends, and families, know those regular people wouldn't spend their income for those items or can't afford it?
And those people wouldn't tell it to another person and that person to another person that, "Hey, did you know? They actually give the real prizes off-camera, let's write to Whenever Possible!" Or, "Remember episode 4 of Whenever Possible? They're relatives, they didn't get the prizes but off-camera YJS gave them something of equal value".
Nothing of that sort has surfaced to this day, which means the show is very serious that no one can give consolation prizes or anything off-camera. Otherwise, the whole premise of Whenever Possible will collapse, and it will trap them in controversies.
LOL. Even YJS wouldn't want to be obligated to spend for consolation prizes even off-camera. Being wealthy doesn't mean you treat everyone.
Which only brings us back to the memories they'll forever talk about. IF ONLY … they might have won. Follow the rules. It is not about whether they're good at games or not.
If you're looking for sense or logic about their superpowers, read this.Heavy spoilers!
In creative writing, one thing you'll learn is how important it is to have an antithesis to everything. It can be a foe, a weakness, or some mechanics or rules. Characters should never ever be perfect, otherwise, it will be boring.
Cashero's antithesis is that they have to pay a steep price to use their superpowers yet for little gain.
- ML: Pay a lot of money to use minimal super strength - 2ML: Get drunk to activate his superpower, he's paying through health - 2FL: She needs to eat sweets for calories. She'll eventually pay for it through her health - The seer old guy: To see the future, he pays with his memories (past) - Time traveler: A broken clock is needed to activate and only for 1 minute!!! And whoever is sent to the past will pay with a few years of their lifespan
Instead of them having an antithesis mortal enemy, or having a weakness, they have to pay a high price for little gain everytime they need to use their superpowers.
Sounds unfair? Shouldn't it be equal?
That was the common approach. But with the popularity of OP (overpowered) genre, it's clear that such an unequal approach is possible.
Remember, in the OP genre, the character often has a very minimal antithesis—that's why they're OP. Cashero simply reversed that mechanic, they're still OP but not overpowered, their superpowers are overpriced.
It doesn't have to make sense. In creative writing, one of the most important rule is that there should always be an antithesis / reverse to something.
In this universe, the antithesis of superpowers is human vices or sickness. To use their superpowers, they have to pay a steep price.
You might be thinking, "that's not an antithesis", it is. They are always paying far more than what they gain from it.
- ML: The strength he gains from money is not equal. He has to consume a lot of money for a minimal gain. He will always be in the negative. - 2ML: He needs to get drunk. The result, he'll die sooner because of it. - 2FL: She needs to eat sweets and sugar to get her calories. It will catch up to her sooner or later. - Seer old man: He can see the future at the expense of forgetting the past. Instead of a vice, it's more like a sickness. - The time traveler: Broken clocks are needed for activation. However, the payment is a shorter lifespan.
That's how it is taught in creative writing.
So, the logic or sense there is that it is the payment for their superpower. Instead of a weakness or a foe, they have to pay a high price for a small gain.
Now, the next question is, "It doesn't make sense that the payment is not equal to what they gain". It still does, considering the popularity of phe OP (overpowered genre) where the main character is OP and their antithesis is very low. This story simply reversed that mechanic.
For ppl who are saying fl is horrible, all of you should watch it till the end. It is pretty normal & relatable…
There's a huge difference between being financially responsible and prioritising money over lives.
The ML was correct, andhe felt bad about it when he left the PS5 guy because his reason why he left him was money, not safety. He felt guilty about it.
However, the FL, the puts money above every life even if that life is her own. Her first sane words, "where did you get the money?" Not, "Thank you" or "I'm sorry".
Then when he did it again, her first concern was "where did you get the money?" "It's her wedding gifts, right?!" Are you saying that is normal? Is not the normal reaction is, "Are you alright? Let's get out of here."
The funny thing here is, if us Autistics react in a different way, we're discriminated upon. But when an NT like the FL reacts differently, it is "okay". We, autistics always try to learn and understand the expectations of "normal" people. But once we understand it, we see the reverse like the FL's obsession with money being the correct reaction in that scenario.
Don't mix being financially responsible with putting money over people's lives regardless if it was hers. That is wrong. Autistic or not, no amount of money can match the worth of a single life. The proper reaction in that scenario was to say "thank you" and to prioritize your safety, not asking "where did you get the money".
