The Japanese have such great potential for historical (think of samurai & ninjas) or for fantasy/horror/sci-fi…
That's understandable. But this is only about using Squid Game as a benchmark for the Deathmatch/Battleroyale genre. And Battle Royale started it all, as far as live-action productions are concerned (it was an adaptation of a 1999 novel of the same name). It's a classic that earned cult status.
If what started it all was not decent, it wouldn't become a pop culture icon nor gain a cult status. The genre itself was named after it! Even in gaming, the genre is called battle royale.
While, yes, the concept of last man standing isn't new, the genre formed because of Battle Royale itself. It's a pop culture icon with a cult following.
Besides, Battle Royale was released in 2000 and Squid Game in 2021. Obviously, the latter will have better budget and "decent" production than the former.
The Japanese are truly masters of Deathmatch/Battleroyale genre.
AFAIK, they started with the live-action adaptation of Battle Royale. It was a masterpiece.
It's very sad that people compare this to Squid Game as if Squid Game is the benchmark of this genre. No. It's the Japanese. It's Battle Royale. ROFL, Alice in Borderland is a gazillion times better than Squid Game in the first place!
Now, we have this. Yet another masterpiece.
Stop comparing this to Squid Game, it can't even hold a candle to any Japanese Deathmatch live-action productions and plots. It is a grave insult to mention Squid Game in the presence of deathmatch masterpieces like Last Samurai Standing!

Ouch. It's sad that people want to escape this time period for a better life, and they thought fictional tropes are real. 😭
If anything, there are safer methods if one truly wants to give it a try, like in the UK it is fairy rings and stone circles. But water… if it doesn't work—even if it is real—definitely drowning follows. 😭
Wow! A well-balanced show. It's comedy + mystery + crime + family + neighbourhood + action + spy rolled into one. Not easy to balance but they did well in the first two episodes.
Her father gave up his title/career. How is that in any way comparable to what the FL and her mother went through?…
Japanese social and familial culture and expectations.
I understand it as well as a fellow Pacific-Asian (not Asian-Pacific which includes Oceania), forgiveness and familial bonds trumps.
In cultures like ours, forgiveness and reconciliation is a core thing. A family is considered the smallest unit of society and thus the very foundation a Nation is. If the family is weak, the Nation as well.
And so, if everyone can forgive each other and show that reconciliation is possible and we all aim for that, then the family unit is strong which in turn makes the Nation solid and resilient no matter what typhoon or earthquake it goes through.
In most other cultures, especially non-Asian, it's totally different. They value different things. Their way of thinking is different. Rights, revenge, getting even, cutting-off completely, are usually far more important than forgiveness and reconciliation and family and Nation.
That said, it wasn't about how the life the FL and her mother wint through is far worse than what her father had to go through, it is about how they all made mistakes and learned to forgive each other and reconcile their differences.
It isn't about cutting-off the woman who, for lack of a definitive term, "stole" her father and sired a son just because she was a total biatch to the FL and removed a key chapter in her father's memoire, rather it is about forgiveness and reconciliation. They met and started on the wrong foot because of decisions and circumstances that everyone made, and yet they met halfway, forgrve each other, and reconciled.
If you want, it was a win-win-win for all of them.
- She recovered her dignity. - She and her father reconciled. - The Yuuki family recovered their dignity as well. - Her half-brother is finally getting closer to their father. - Their father is finally no longer a "monster" who prioritized his reputation over his family. - The FL, and step mom, joined forces to change the status of women in Japanese culture. After all, that was also the original goal of her step mom, she just lost her way.
And many more.
I am NOT saying that your concerns are not valid. I am NOT saying that this approach is applicable at all times (no, it is not, especially if the issue was a crime (like rape or murder)). But for this particular dynamic, it all comes down to culture. To forgiveness and reconciliation. To family. And to Nation.
You know that ancient proverb, "there is a time for everything".
Hehe. Yep. In Korea, sports and national issues trumps all shows.National issues > Sports > everything else😁It's…
Another good thing, for weekly shows which were affected, it gives the entire cast and staff a much needed break. They usually film 1–2 weeks ahead. Now they have 1 weekly episode free time they can use later since they'll be 3 weeks ahead in filming if they don't use it.
NOOOO... No episode this week because of the baseball match between japan and korea :"(((((((((((I was waiting…

National issues > Sports > everything else
😁
It's the healthiest terrestrial TV industry in the world. In most other countries, TV shows is top priority. National issues are for primetime news. And sports are exclusive to PPV channels. 😅
I think initially his subconscious was giving him hints he was his victim. He didn't understand it, he just acted on that "I don't like him for some reason" feeling.
It took him the entire episode to finally figure out why. 🤣 Now, the real fun begins. Even if he doesn't care the truth might get revealed about his business, his pride was hurt because a sheep is fighting the wolf. It turned personal.
I wouldn't be surprise if he doesn't care if his business shuts down, he can rebuild it. What's important is to settle a score. To prove that a sheep can never win against a wolf.
The problem with him is he was blinded by money. I immediately knew it was a trap.In such cases, you bring it…
Yep! That rarely used tunnel was very suspicious.
It would've been understandable if he was under duress, like a family or friend was supposedly kidnapped. But just returning a phone, in a suspicious place. 😅😅😅 Too much greed for someone with work and supposedly aware that safety comes first.

The funny stuff: the Korean water trope.
Yeah. Everything fantastical always happen with Koreans falling into a body of water.
It doesn't matter if it's a pale of water. It will suddenly turn as deep as the Pacific Ocean. 😆
Ironically, believe it or not, bodies of water is usually involved with many unexplainable legends and myths. For example, whenever there are reports of time slips, time travel, and parallel world glimpses and travels, water is almost always involved. It can be a body of water or there was heavy rain. You cae serach it, there are so many legends and myths of this around the world.
However, the Koreans are the only ones who actually turned it into a serious trope. Possibly also deeply rooted in ancient Korean culture. The rest of the world is just random yet many.
1. The market sword quad scene. It was powerful and unique. There were so many subtle clues and messages there. It was a multilayered scene. Even the way both MLs touched the sword were important. No, the 1ML's explanation of the scene was only the surface. There's more to it than that.
2. The approach. Typical drama focuses on the romance and court intrigue is a plot device only. In this show, the court politics is on equal footing at the romance. Neither is a plot device. They go hand-in-hand. The romance wouldn't exist without the court drama. The court drama wouldn't exist without the romance.
