https://vibes.8world.com/movies-shows/mediacorp-tvbs-drama-thai-aokbab-taiwan-singapore-3119121

cast of the show is finally out! we have thai actress chutimon chuengcharoensukying (aokbab)playing yao ke xun, and chen hao sen as bai shang huan. supporting roles include tsao yu ning as he bing xun and singaporean actor cai cheng jun as a lin.

i have so much to say about this!!! as an OG novel fan…

i first read the book back in 2019, the same year it was released, and it quickly became my favourite chinese novel because of its fantastical elements. ever since then, i have found myself borrowing it repeatedly from the library just to experience the story again. even though i already know the plot by heart, it never gets less interesting no matter how many times i reread it.

now that the cast has been announced, i have to admit i feel quite disappointed. the actors do not seem to match their original descriptions in the book, (appearance wise) especially in terms of age. since the story was originally a high school romance, it seems like the casting may have led to a change in setting to a university instead, (because the actors are 30…) which likely means certain plot elements had to be altered as well.

will this significantly affect the story? (the synopsis already differs..) i guess we will find out next year. i just hope they remain as faithful to the original plot as possible. the novel itself was relatively short, so i am curious how it will be expanded into a full tv series. personally, it feels like it might have been better suited for a movie, but i am still willing to wait and see how it turns out.

one concern i have is the casting of the female lead. since the actress is thai, i was a bit worried after hearing in interviews that she has only been learning chinese for 1–2 years, especially since the director mentioned there will be no dubbing. i really hope her performance comes across naturally without any distracting accent.

the only aspect i am relatively satisfied with is the casting of tsao yu ning. if i remember correctly, he used to be a professional baseball player, so at least we have an athlete playing an athlete (even if the character is a basketball player this time).

overall, i just hope the adaptation does the book justice and allows more people to fall in love with this story 💗🤞 waiting for the show to arrive in 2027

this drama really boosts my seratonin, what a masterpiece comfort drama. i loved watching the friendship, kinship and relationship. i don’t think any high school drama can ever beat this… kudos to Mao de shu for his effort in this production, the intro, outro and DV scenes were all filmed so well, so naturally. not to mention the douyin and Weibo character accounts they set up while the show was airing, seeing the posts made me think these characters existed.

Title Derailment
this show had a very interesting plot, with phenomenal acting from liu hao cun. the first half of the show felt a bit too long, with too many scenes focussed on the hair salon portion, so that made me drop the show for a couple of months. but I came back to complete the show, and despite being confused, the sci-fi of the second half was more captivating!

When did MDL start including shows from Singapore? I'm so happy that this is added <3
i believe MDL only added the singapore tag over the past few years. previously, sg dramas were usually classified under china and similar categories.

users are able to add shows that are not yet in the database, so that is probably how more sg titles started appearing over time.

i was actually quite surprised to see emerald hill listed but not little nyonya, considering how iconic it is, so i added it myself. glad to hear you are happy to see it there :)

fl best friend, er xi, actually bothers me so much
they added in too many er xi and cao guang scenes in this show. if they stuck to the novel, er xi wouldn’t have been so unlikable… she simply barely appeared lol, her scenes really irritated me, all the unnecessary conflict and drama, and a horrible attitude …

a masterpiece.. this script was interesting, the front half of the show was really funny. although it got sad and hard to watch towards the end, (painful to watch) thankfully there were funny moments here and there to keep me going. the actors did a very good job and were rightfully casted for their characters. the main leads must have been tough to play considering the complexity of this script, kudos to ancy and jiang long for their performance here.

this show is so good, it’s really funny and has an interesting plot, so many puns and sarcastic comments really kept me entertained. and ancy deng’s acting over here is phenomenal, I refuse to believe she was 19 years old when she played this character.

what! i was fully expecting his appearance to be a plot twist, your comment has left me speechless. it would actually be quite funny if the truth turns out to be what you said, because i found that theme park scene so sudden and random and was attempting to find 101 reasons to explain it…

i found a behind the scenes video filmed at the theme park that confirms the guy with zhou ye was zhai xiaowen.

your theory is definitely possible, but it got me thinking, why is the female lead unable to recognise him when she first meets him? they share the same face, like in someday or one day, where the female lead was shocked to see her boyfriend’s face after time travelling. if she knew him previously, surely he would have reminded her of someone she once knew… but in this timeline, she only recognises her boss, which i do not really understand.

unless both timelines are happening concurrently, and she accidentally ended up in a different one where they still meet but with different identities and under different circumstances. maybe they appear with different faces in universe, but for the audience, they use the same actor to play both versions? honestly i might be overthinking this a bit 😭

C-ent does seem to love their Cantonese lol. Seems to be the only dialect that get exception from mandarin
i think cantonese culture was particularly influential and mainstream in the 1980s and 1990s. it is so common to see mentions of hk celebrities or posters of theirs in the background of shows set in that era. i vaguely remember mentions of hk culture in reopen my journals as well. it was not just in mainland china, but i believe it had a strong influence in taiwan too. i was surprised to see the female lead of our times being into andy lau.

the man shown is hiding his face dating the FL in her precious life should be the Ml right, looks like him.
i was thinking the same! it is so unusual for them to film a flashback scene like that, they could have easily cast an actor to play that character, so not showing his face is definitely intentional. but i wonder how they are going to explain the plot afterwards though. why is she able to meet him again in her original timeline? unless they go for a someday or one day kind of setting, which would make the plot super complex.

loving everything about this show so far! but i think they should stop including cantonese. it is probably there for a more authentic experience, but it sounds quite out of place when the actors are not native speakers 😭 especially bai zhen zhu, her cantonese is quite distracting. it is kind of funny hearing actors with a northern accent suddenly switching into cantonese sentences

can’t believe i teared up while watching episode 7! when the teacher was checking for the highest scorer in the province, it gave me goosebumps, and the moment the principal ran over to tell the female lead she got 616 points was when i started tearing up… such a touching scene. funny because i barely cry while watching shows, i am usually quite cold blooded

I'm willing to overlook at a lot for this drama because it's very cozy. The ending, however, is my biggest fear.
me too, i genuinely like the vibes and pacing of this drama… having watched a couple of transmigration or reincarnation dramas, i am now scared of their endings. making the leads wake up and realise everything was just a dream, that everything they experienced did not happen and everyone they met did not exist, is honestly so tragic and cruel.

i agree! i felt the same when I was watching episode 1 of this show. the plot is different but the female leads…
i feel you! i watched summit of our youth and the ending really ruined the story for me… even though both leads remembered what happened, that ending still felt cruel. and i am honestly scared of getting a romance in the farm type of ending too, like what do you mean we do not even get to see the male lead’s face and they only show his back??

i have seen tons of complaints about scent of time’s ending as well, so let’s just hope the scriptwriter does this show justice… 🤞

ML actor is cute 😊 I loved his natural acting in Always Home.
yes! it didn’t even feel like he was acting in that show, i really loved his performance there and i am loving him here so far as well. he is pretty talented in acting, especially considering he debuted as an idol and never formally studied at a performance academy. i feel like he is one of those idol turned actors with strong career potential. hope he continues choosing good scripts

2 episodes in and i am enjoying it so far! they really cast the right actors, i love seeing zhou ye play this “i won’t let anyone bully me” kind of character, and zhai xiaowen was the right choice for a gentle and respectful young man.

i am so happy to see familiar faces from other shows. jiang zi xin and lawrence wong from 2018’s story of yanxi palace, what a classic and my first cdrama, are appearing in the same show again. i am really hoping to see scenes with both of them! then we have tu ling, who played xia feng hua’s mum in northward, and kevin who played xue ying in young blood.

i am really praying the ending is good, please do not give me another “everything is a dream” ending anymore

i agree! i felt the same when I was watching episode 1 of this show. the plot is different but the female leads both came from awful/horrible/complex/ sad backgrounds. and they were lucky they got to meet people that loved and supported them in this new world (of course there are people that dislike them and cause trouble too). i am hoping we don’t get the romance in the farm kinda open ending though ….
