As much Koreans can make good social dramas and Japanese can make raw, realistic movies, Chinese are experts in making freaking sad dramas.

Now I remember the reason I promised myself not to watch dramas with sad endings. Especially the sad endings that are logical sad endings. The last time I had felt this much heartbroken was after watching Youth of May. I can't even feel angry, because it happened what should most possibly have happened.

I actually have heard more vicious comments when the guy is older. I don't know how many examples you are referring to. If it's only Crash Course on Romance, I can give you many other samples in which the opposite happened.
For example, in Love and Destiny people criticized that ML is old and ugly. In Clean with Passion for Now (Korean version) people hated ML because he looks very older than FL. On the contrary, in Rational Life they loved FL being much older than ML, or in Why Women Love people didn't care about the FL being about 20 years older than the ML.
I think recently, in age gap dramas, it is often the FL who is older than ML. Even when the age difference is not that much, usually it is FL who is older.
I personally don't care about the age gap, as long as the chemistry works. As also mentioned in the comments, it's not about the age, it is the stance and position of each partner in the relationship.
