Honestly? I kind of don't care that things were difficult for her? Like it was difficult for every character. Actually, yeah. Now I can look back and see that there is a big issue with the plot in general. Yeah, mimi is annoying as hell, but she's mostly annoying because she's overused by a plot that didn't have any leverage besides dangling her helplessness in front of the viewers as an excuse for why the plot kept getting more complicated and why nothing was getting resolved. So I guess I don't blame her for being so furiously pointless yet overused...nah! Who am I kidding? I hold her personally responsible for everything! lol! I just can't separate the character's non-diegetic role in the plot from her diegetic one in the story. She is such a plot device for making Changge's life harder and dragging the story out longer that I can't just look at her place in the story as only a servant of two masters who is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Yes, I get it. She was getting used by the Khatun. I just think the show would have been more interesting if this character didn't have so much relevance to the situation to begin with. So how she operates with the given rhetorics becomes irrelevant in my situation. I think viewers who just absolutely love this show and like mini, are able to see the story as a package and I think in a neatly tied format, the character is more relatable and sympathetic. My brain is just not working like that. Not now anyway. I'm already in analyze mode. It's a personal sensitivity for me. I see a weird narrative choice, I just go into a spiral of figuring out why it happened like that and why it should've been avoided. It's only coming up because I think the show is good enough to be held accountable though. Like I wouldn't overanalyze Miss the Dragon or Ten miles of peach blossoms like this. They wouldn't be able to hold up at all!
My absolute favorite example of FL losing agency is "Secret Garden", where FL rides a bicycle to chase down eleventeen…
Haha, this reminds me of this show I once watched. The female lead gets shot once and just bandages herself up, then a few episodes later, she cuts her hand and the male lead has to wrap it for her and she whimpers and says it hurts...like YOU WERE SHOT?! You stitched yourself up and it didn't hurt but this does?!
You bring up such a good point. A lot of times these days, people simply applaud a show because the female lead can throw a fist but if you really pay attention, you'll see how she doesn't really have agency. This shows how easily writers can get away with lazy writing of female characters with no one being the wiser.
Honestly, the levels of irritation this character has inspired in me, can only compete with Jin Mi and Jin Mi…
I'm honestly waiting to watch mimi die so I can get some emotional revenge! And yeah, although at this point I'm used to disappointing final arcs in cdramas, I still get pissed when one comes my way. The show was a 10 in the first 25 episodes for me. After episode 30 it slowly dwindled to an 8.
Can't related either way, tbh. I never have time to rewatch anything and rarely feel the urge to, anyway. Even…
I get what he means a little bit. For example, if I watch a tragedy where the main character or my favorite character dies, then it would be hard to rewatch that. So based on what he says, if I can rewatch it, then it hadn't really emotionally touched me. But that only holds for sad stuff. Happy things make you happy so it's not like it would hurt to get happy again?!
