Yeah, just caught the last ep quickly. This is indeed a no romance drama. He call her name in a longing way but…
I think it's respectly sweet. At least Shawn acknowledged that.
I feel like their BTS had so much more sweetness and drama than the drama itself π. They were always happy and laughing; Shawn would tease Shi Shi and she'd be LOLing.

Same! I'd rather that they not tease us with the possibility.
I read on rednote; a Chinese commentor said that Shawn, himself said that an alternative ending where Ping'an and Shaocheng could be together. He was possibly asked about the ending in an interview.

It's so sad because we see that they were truly happy in each other's space especially Shaocheng. He made her felt like she had a home and she made him felt more warmth. We were teased with them slowly having something that could lead to more and also a reminder that they might part ways, yet the writer chose the latter. Sighs....
It's a realistic ending and villians are respectfully dead yet I'm disappointed with it sighs...Don't look further because this is a true spoiler.
Shawn Dou did leak the ending then LOL. It's sad Ping'an can't stay in the capital because she doesn't want to become a tool for the empress to use yet Shaocheng can't leave the capital because of his people πππ. My heart hurts for them sighs....I felt like they didn't want to hold the other person back. Ping'an can't ask Shaocheng to go travel with her and Shaocheng can't ask her to stay. I need them in another drama with a true happy ending! I felt so betrayed by this writer.
So which side is ML on now? Upholding his son-in-law position or beside his love interest?
From the douyin teasers, it looks like Shaocheng never wanted Ping'an to partake in the Wu-Li battle; risking her life again. I believe he genuinely meant it when he told her that he wanted to take her away so she'd be safe, but Ping'an didn't realize the meaning behind his words so he had no choice but to go along with her narrative. Shaocheng always valued family and friends so it didn't make sense why he wouldn't protect her when she means alot to him.
Wanted to add my 2 cents on Shawn Dou too!In contrast to Shawn, I knew Ye Cheng and saw his performances more.…
We'll see if Shaocheng turns into an actual opponent. I feel like as important are his plans, Ye Ping'an might be too important for him to hurt her vice versa Ping'an is always challenging him π. She's the one that keeps him in check. I really believe that if he had not met her, he would have turned bad. She is the reason why he thinks twice before doing something.
But damn, she was disappointed with him in ep 24 though. Lets hope Shaocheng is planning something big. I feel like he did wanted to climb up using the marriage scheme, but after investigating that pretend victim and Ping'an's cliff scare, he probably already knows that the Wu are behind this. They are powerful so he's biding his time. He did tell Ping'an to leave and wait; possibly, he didn't want her to be involved or get hurt - my wishful thinking π π€
In contrast to Shawn, I knew Ye Cheng and saw his performances more. I always wanted to try a Shawn Dou drama but never found them interesting or just didn't attempt to watch it. He was a bit stiff on ep 1 ngl, but while watching I quite like his performances. It's the little nuances and microexpressions that he does with his character making me feel like, "Oh, we do have some life in this character. He's not so grey!"; all his character knows is power, family, and his people so he cares for nothing else. He hates the capital and the nobles, but he needs them. When understanding his background, I understood why they had chosen Shawn to play Shaocheng before Ye Cheng had even shown up. To me, Ye Cheng has the sunnier, righteous, and handsome look while Shawn had the rugged, coarse, and manly look which fits the part of a very poor and low man who's villianess ways at the beginning in wanting to climb up makes us question whether he was good or bad.
π I think he took this because of Liu Shi Shi. He's been fanboying over her.
Haha! It is super cute! He blushes when he talks about her and can't really look into her eyes for long. He did do a shoutout to Youku hinting at a collab with her, but I think he wants like a wuxia/fight drama with her. Youku's a pretty bad production so I'd rather some other network pick up this pairing.

It was a twist for me that Xian'er was the power thirsty one though manipulating even her father ngl.
