That's why Chai An and Kang Ning could talk about marriage easily -back and forth. They were on same level. Meanwhile, in Scent of Time -another Song drama, Wang Xingyue as Zhong Xi Wu couldn't marry Hua Qian easily, a daughter of rich n prominent merchant, because he was born noble. His mother was a royal princess married to a rich merchant. His family business was controlling the certain commerce (actually not far from craft n trading) but he sorta needed a royal decree to take a wife. Xi Wu could easily marry Hua Qian but she probably only ended up as a concubine. He needed a royal decree to make her the official wife. At a certain point in the drama, he threatened his mother that he prefer to become a monk/living celibate life than failed to marry HQ. I think marriage within a rigid caste system was a custom throughout many dynasties. We met again this custom in Ming dynasty and later dynasties. A New Life Begins is a costume drama incorporating modern ideas.

I think the drama maker made the drama stick to the Song culture and values, not pushing modern values into costume drama. I.E, A New Life Begins, starred by BJT and TXW. It is a costume drama yet it's contained with modern issues and aspirations. "the harsh realities of the Song dynasty" they make it lighter in the drama. The rigid caste system(royal, noble, scholar, merchant/farmer pariah), the strict standard for women to be obedient wife, fragile and elegant looking like Guan Yin, etc. One of the reasons Kang Ning -from not so rich background- could easily marry the rich Chai An was, they come from similar merchant caste. Meanwhile her brother in law Fan was scolded hard by his father for accidentally wanted to take a scholar born caste woman.

Yes, they are a good drama. From acting to the setting, I think it reflects what happened in Song dynasty life. But the real Song dynasty life may be harsher and more difficult for women than the depiction in the drama. What I love the most about it is about dynamic interaction among the characters. And all the charas are not without flaws.
I was surprised by the scene of "Chain An kicks a ball", he was deliberately aimed at 3rd sister, Kang Ning. He was rude, but that was due to his childish demeanor. He was attracted to Kang Ning because she was the perfect opponent for his mischievous deeds. Yeah, nothing cannot slip away from C netizen's eyes lol. Chai An scolded Fu Hui for being jealously violent is understandable. From the POV of a Song man, it's right to do. This drama is set in Song Dynasty, right? even though Fu Hui came from Li family, once she got married to Fan family, she became a part of The Fan's. In most occasions, she acted more neutral and leaned more toward the Fan. Why did they hate the Li matriarch? I know she was loud, stingy and shameless, lol. But again, it is understandable for her to act like that. Raising the 5 + 1 kids alone and living with servants, she should think about how to survive solely by farming the land. Adding that there were pressures from other Li family who wanted to seize their inheritances. Sometimes, living a harsh life all the time made them ignore the courtesy. In a kidnapping arc, Fu Hui even advised Kang Ning to throw chastity if needed, to save her soul.

I think " club friday series" is more savage and absurd. I watched 2 eps of Stepmom. It was not a step mom and daughter fighting the same guy. It was a battle between her step mom and her old friend. Basically her step mom and 'friend' fought to win over a guy (the daughter's dad). Since the step mom married her dad, her old friend went crazy and tried her best to take down the step mom. The friend turned enemy adopted a boy, and she used him to take down the Stepmom family. The now step daughter was evil too as she added the salt to the wounds. She kept causing trouble to her step mom even though she was genuinely loved her.
