Just watched ep 21 and 22. Eeeekkk!!! My cheek muscles hurt from smiling so much!!Boat scene:Jingjing: "I don't…
So looking forward to this scene! It’s not in the novel but from your summary, it sounds very inline with “epilogue” Yu Tu. Ever since they become official, I love his possessive behavior towards her in laying claim to Jing Jing through his words and actions. He knows he got a good one and he’s not letting her go!!! 😀😛
Just saw the trailers for ep 25-32 and i gotta say this is one of the best novel adaptations I've ever seen. They…
It really is! I am amazed of how aligned the drama is to the novel, down to the dialogue! I love it since I am a fan of the novel. I am looking forward to extra scenes after they became a couple to see how they round up the story especially relating to the epilogues! The episodes thus far have been a treat!
Can I just say again how happy I am that Gu Man served as the screen writer for this drama and shared with us her story?!!! I shudder to think of someone else writing the screenplay. There would probably be so many typical C-drama tropes where the exes would be written with more prominent roles to create unnecessary angst. We have none of that nonsense here!!! 👍👍👍 The focus has been on the couple and the support characters stayed in the background and allow the beautiful romance of Yu Tu and Jing Jing to unfold. The exes’ appearances only cement what Jing Jing and Yu Tu want in a partner and how they found what they need in each other. ❤️❤️
As a fan of the novel, it’s very gratifying to witness the characters come to life through Yang Yang and Reba’s portrayal. Although there is no element of surprise in terms of the plot but the wonderful chemistry between Yang Yang and Reba magnifies everything good about the novel and their romance. They can be cute and playful, mature and attentive to each other and passionate and sensual when the occasion calls for it. Can’t get enough of these two and can’t wait for future episodes!!!
So THANK YOU Gu Man for creating such great characters individually and writing a beautiful love story for us to appreciate!😀
I was wondering about their conversation! because sometimes it feels off. I feel like by the way she's acting…
In the novel (I have not seen the two recent episodes), Yu Tu”s ex was definitely throwing shades at Jing Jing, hinting that she achieved success not through hard work but other “means”. Yu Tu understood her immediately and shut her down by apologizing for their break up and wasting her time. His words might seem apologetic but his demeanor was especially cold, indicating she and their relationship meant very little to him. It was brutal but necessary because she wasn’t getting the hint before.
I honestly do not fault his ex for the breakup because she has her goals in life and his choice of career did not align with what she wanted in a partner. Fine, no one blames her for her decision but the back tracking and criticizing of Jing Jing and placing all the blame on Yu Tu for their failed relationship is just so wrong. She knew of his love for aerospace and I’m sure all the years they were together, he expressed his intention to pursue his dream. She thought she could change his mind and that their relationship was deep enough to sway him. In the end, they are not suited for each other. She wants financial security in a partner and he needs unconditional support from his. I’m not sad about it! Her loss is Jing Jing’s gain.
Actually, you're statement is erroneous. You can merely google this information easily to verify. Chinese EX:☑️…
Thank you for the detailed analysis. When I read the original poster's comments, I was about to do a google search the salary of an aerospace engineer in China but you saved me the time so very much appreciated! It's outlined perfectly and the salary comparison is very in line with the plot. I'm sure the author, Gu Man would have researched these details before making this a big plot point of her story. I can see a position that like his being underpaid given it's a government job. I believe he is not in management but work in teams with specific projects so he will not demand the upper salary of those in that industry; salary raises might also be capped while a position in investment banking has a potential to earn much more. Also considering he is living in a big city like Shanghai, the cost of living must be crazy expensive so if he has a modest salary, plus a mortgage, I'm sure financially it is difficult for a man like Yu Tu. However, he accepts the low paying aspect of his job and for intents and purposes able to make ends meet but seeing his parents who are so afraid to burden him with any financial stress, he cannot help but feels guilt and questions if he's doing everything within his power to take care of his family. This is a very normal reaction and in no way is he complaining of his financial situation to those around him. He only shares his intention when asked because gossip has been spread within his social circle that he might leave the aerospace industry. I can see the pain on his face when he talks about leaving so for those who question his intentions or actions during this difficult time in his life, I have to also wonder if we were watching the same scenes.
LOVE everything about your post! Like you, I have read the novel a couple of times and know what will happen next…
For sure! I'm not sure if you're aware Gu Man served as the screen writer or cowritten the screenplays for all of her novel to drama adaptations and all of them are quite successful! Although YAMG has not finished airing yet, I would say it's a success based on the number of views this week and we have not even gotten to the meaty part of the story. I'm sure she had a say on the portrayal of her characters but writing screen plays is not the same as writing a novel. There are nuances involved and not everything in the novel will translate well in screen. In fact, I remember reading that the drama "Court Lady" with Xu Kai was a disaster and the screen writer was the writer of the novel. According to viewers, the plot was messy and did not flow well in the drama. Some scenes did not make sense from one scene to the next. I initially plan on watching the drama but decided not to; I have a feeling that I will be very frustrated with the drama direction and rather not be aggravated.
Back to YAMG, I do give the largest credit to Gu Man for creating such wonderful, layered characters and being able to translate their beautiful romance on screen and also thanks to the production team. The visuals are absolutely stunning, I even love the scenes of Shanghai nightlife. The game scenes are also well done even though I am not a gamer and have no clue what's going on. Everything about this drama is so on point and make this novel lover so very happy to see her favorite characters come alive on screen!
Thank you! Now that I read epilogue 10 again, I do think you're right. The scene might be expanded to include a bed scene at the end. However, I hope there is only one bed scene for epilogue 8 and rather not have these scenes back to back. I rather the drama spread out their "affection" throughout their time together.
Feel like I should post something about the show itself for people who want to check it out but aren't sure. Have…
Aptly described! These are the kind of posts I love reading as you have taken the time to analyze the plot and the characters’ motivations. 😊 Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I also love Yu Tu’s character because he is so human. What he is going through is too realistic and so many dramas romanticized life. Yes, many do want to escape from reality by watching dramas filled with perfect couples and happy endings but for me, I just want to be moved by the story and YAMG (the novel and drama so far) has done that for me. When I see the burdened Yu Tu on screen, I just want to give him a hug and say it’s okay but at the same time, I wouldn’t know what else to say to comfort him. There is no right/wrong choice because his decision is individual based and many of us see the pros to continue pursuing his dream and the merits of settling on a career that will better provide for his family. I also felt Yang Yang has delivered a worthy performance so far and his interactions with our FL Reba's Jing Jing is very on point. Jing Jing is also another well written character to perfectly balance and complement Yu Tu and Dilraba has been absolutely captivating in her depiction. I mentioned in another post that her liveliness and outgoing personality can come across as over the top and make the character annoying but Reba found the right balance of playfulness, humor and sensitivity required of her character to completely charm the viewers.
I have read “A Slight Smile is Very Charming” which is the novel title of Love 020. I have not watched the drama but am familiar with Xiao Nai but I never fully identify with the character or the couple because they are seemingly too perfect. I do like the parallel you described of Yu Tu being the "failed" version of Xiao Nai. I have never considered it that way but that would explain why my preference leans towards Yu Tu out of all Gu Man’s novels. All her male leads are intelligent, overachievers and successful in their respective careers and Yu Tu is the one written not to be shining the brightest but still by far my absolute favorite ML.
This is such a great adaptation so far! Everything about it is just beautiful. It's hard not to fall in love with…
LOVE everything about your post! Like you, I have read the novel a couple of times and know what will happen next but I'm still anticipating the drama episodes like crazy! Even without the element of surprise, this drama adaptation is amazingly well done and very engaging. I'm so happy that Gu Man was chosen as the scriptwriter who kept pretty much all the details of the novel intact. I can't recall any adaptation that so closely mirror the novel without changes. Of course having both YY and Reba in the leading roles helps. They are such great casting choices for the roles of Yu Tu and Jing Jing and their chemistry is so good and natural. I can't wait for the emotional and fluffy scenes in the coming weeks. :)
Hi! Can someone who has read the novel spoil some best scene for me?I I heard this drama follow the novel so I…
Yes the epilogues are amazing! I have many favorite scenes:
• The love letters and Yu Tu’s regret and desire to win her back, very heart wrenching chapters to read. I get teary-eyed when I read those chapters. • The confession scene at the gas station – felt both their emotions when reading this part of the novel. • Yu Tu’s showing his love to Jing Jing in front of their high school classmates at the karaoke get-together. • The paparazzi chapter is one of my favorites. Love how clever Gu Man used Yu Tu’s job confidentiality to stir up some laughs. • His proposal is also super sweet and very unconventional. I like how crafty he was in the scene; I was surprised and did not expect his overture but loved it! His proposal is in line with his character, low-key but very memorable to me.
So many more! There are many conversation pieces and quotes that I want to detail but don’t want to spoil the end too much for non readers.
Thank you for sharing the video. The soundtrack is wonderful and poignantly described Yu Tu's feelings for Jing Jing and their romantic connection. No offense to the lyrics translation in the video, but I really love your translation more. Very poetic and heart warming!
When I read there are three bed scenes, my first thought was the scene you described. We'll be getting aggressive Yu Tu soon.
Now I wonder what the other two bed scenes could be (trying to recall any moments described in the epilogues)? Perhaps, they are newly added scenes to the drama and not in the novel?
I think it could be the jewelry event that Jing Jing returned to Shanghai to promote. She took a few days off…
I read that chapter again and he just dropped her off at the event and went to the cafe to read. Unless they changed the scene but Jing Jing looked super glamorous so it must be a red carpet or high end event. Now I am super curious too. 😀
I have read the novel bt can't identify which scene it will be from the drama where Dilreba is wearing dark red…
I think it could be the jewelry event that Jing Jing returned to Shanghai to promote. She took a few days off from filming and spent her time at Yu Tu’s but they were followed by paparazzis. Yu Tu did accompany her to the event but stayed in the background. This is just my guess though.
It saddens me to read so many opposing comments because I am enjoying the drama immensely and am a fan of the novel. I have looked forward to sharing and discussing views with many people here and I (along with many visitors here) are open to many discussions even contrary ones as long as they are presented with evidence (reference to specifics in the novel or drama). We’re all adults here and can express ourselves in a civil manner, without resorting to personal attacks.
Regarding the acting, I feel that viewers should judge Yang Yang and Dilraba solely on their character portrayal of Yu Tu and Qiao Jing Jing. The opinion if they are top tier artists or won acting awards are meaningless and should not be the measure if they would shine in their respective roles in YAMG. The fact that they played a certain character in a prior drama is not the basis to determine if they excel/fail in their performance in YAMG. A newbie with no prior acting credit can perform a character extremely well. The questions I would ask myself is (1) Are they portraying both characters in a convincing way? (2) Do they embody the characters as I expect them to be? (3) Do I want to continue to see their character development and romantic connection? If you answer “no” to any of these questions, you should consider dropping the drama. Obviously you’re not getting the satisfaction from your viewing experience so no need to stay on a page that brings you no joy.
For those who indicated Yang Yang is too stiff, there has many posts from readers of the novel that it’s in character. He is reserved and subdued but there will an emotional arc coming up and growth in his character (in the novel). We’re already 12 episodes in, more than 1/3 of the way through so a viewer should have an opinion by now. The question remains for those who believe YY (or Reba for the matter) is underperforming, do you have the interest or patience to see their change and growth? If not, then you’re not invested in the characters or their romantic journey so there’s no reason to continue. For those who are willing to see the drama through (and I hope you do), I think you’ll witness a beautiful love story and hopefully find the overall experience very rewarding.
I started this drama on a whim, because I liked the cover picture. I didn't read the summary plot or seen any…
I typically binge watch a drama when it has finished airing and subbed but I made an exception for YAMG by watching the episodes when they air. I have read the novel years ago so I know the plot and characters quite well. It helps alleviate the need to "chase" the next episode, being anxious to know what happens next in the plot. I also like watching it live and discussing with others in the forum on various topics.
So, it depends what kind of experience you want from the drama? Do you intend to comment actively here? If so, you should watch the episodes as they air because many people will leave after the drama is finished airing. Do you want to be surprised? Or will you be too anxious that you need to know what happens NOW? If you want that surprise, I will say avoid reading the novel. If you can't wait, then go for it because it's a short read. So far the drama adaptation is very faithful to the novel and I expect the rest of the drama to follow the written work quite closely. Either way, I don't believe you will be disappointed with the story. For me, the drama has exceeded my expectations even though there is no element of surprise. I can better scrutinize Yang Yang and Reba's chemistry as compared to the novel. I have a better understanding of Yu Tu's inner turmoil from reading the novel. All the emotions have been beautifully magnified by our leading couple which just leave me with a satisfied feeling of having a wish fulfilled. From reading comments from other posters, I think others feel the same way. The story still resonates with me even if I knew of the plot due to both Yang Yang and Reba's acting performance. I truly think they embody the characters of Yu Tu and Jing Jing (so far) and I have faith that their chemistry will continue to delight and move us as the drama progresses.
Ahh! I am impressed with Reba here. The more I watch the clips again the more I find her aptly fitting. I think…
Reba has been remarkable as Qiao Jing Jing and I am so happy that she brought one of my favorite female leads in a novel to life! 😊 Some might say that it’s easy to portray her character (for Reba, it might be true as it’s less challenging compared to her other roles) but any other actress can easily make Jing Jing to be over-the-top annoying with her exuberance. I thought she strikes the right balance of being a glamorous celebrity, a cute and playful persona, witty and sassy when the occasion calls for and being thoughtful and supportive when she is in Yu Tu’s presence especially when discussing his career. She has been eye-catching the first 10 episodes of the drama! Can’t wait for her to showcase the other sides of Jing Jing in the upcoming episodes!
I don't think you need to point it's like they need to endure it. Actually as much as I remember there were much…
I don’t see any harm in advising reasonable viewers of the gaming component to the drama and stressing that YAMG at its core is not a gaming drama. Those who read and love the novel want to encourage those on the fence there is much more to the story than the first 10 episodes which are heavy on the gaming aspect. And you’re right we cannot force those who are unwilling to give YAMG a fair shot to continue watching. But I do see a lot of posts where individuals who are genuinely torn about continuing because they are fans of YY and/or Reba and want to like the drama but found the gaming to be too much or were confused or bored by the plot or pace of the story. Those viewers who are wavering are the ones I want to encourage the most because I do think it’s a loss to miss out on a good story/drama like YAMG.
As a fan of the novel, it’s very gratifying to witness the characters come to life through Yang Yang and Reba’s portrayal. Although there is no element of surprise in terms of the plot but the wonderful chemistry between Yang Yang and Reba magnifies everything good about the novel and their romance.
