I think you don't understand her character or what relationship she has with Fan Yue. They started out with a transactional relationship and is only there to gain benefits from each other, otherwise she would have stayed clear from him or even him from her. Ofcourse she would conclude that he is only protecting the stone when they aren't in any romantic or intimate relationship yet, she doesn't trust him and only chose to rely on herself after the traumatic event that happened to her which awakened her that not everyone is worth trusting and relying on. Also, she's allowed to be suspicious about who she allies with, after all they are demons and for your last question, not every female lead is meant to be written just to fall head over heels for male leads charm at first sight.

I said this before but saying it again. This drama has 40 episodes, Bai Shou can be annoying for some because she has flaws and isn't perfect yet, at the moment she is stubborn but this trait of hers is what keeps her going. It is what keeps her determination strong and unwavering. She went through a traumatic event, she has no one to rely on ; last person she trusted lied to her throughout almost their whole lives living together as a family. The only goal in her life right now is seeking revenge and she realized it the hard way that she can only rely on her own self, hence she doesn't have that trust towards anyone. She completely became closed off. She will definitely have a growth arc or what you call character development. As they experience more events, we can see her slowly growing and learning. So, let's be patient with the plot, there wouldn't be much to tell if she was already perfect.

I think they will, if Chong Zhao finally understands Bai Shuo and not be so overly posessive of her.

It's because she's been constantly stuck in her little room and little city. She hasn't explored the real world outside, even Fan Yue who entered her room and looked at all the books and stuff she had for seeking immortality found them as junk, that is why she has been constantly seeking for someone to guide her, as she was tired of getting scammed, in ep 1 we see her persistently asking the woman at the temple for more information about how to become an immortal which clearly shows she hasn't found the right knowledge and methods to it and this fact alone equates to her not knowing much about Lanling sect. She may know little knowledge but knowledge you read from written books by some mere mortals vs knowledge you gain through experience are both two completely different things, so you can't just expect her to know everything when she hasn't seen the whole iceberg in all the years she spent learning.

imo she's not that bad to the extent of being insufferable, this drama has 40 episodes were barely halfway through, there is room for character development.

I doubt, since there were scenes were they had many extras. I think it's rather a choice of direction to give more focus to the main protagonist and antagonist of the storyline. Having less extras on screen doesn't take way that much at all.

ML could also be the biggest red flag out there yet people would still swoon whereas if it was FL she'd get dragged left and right. The standard is crazy. Me too, I love that about her atleast she isn't whiny!
