Simple disclaimer: I love both leads. They have surface flaws, yet wonderful qualities beneath them. Still, I often feel compelled to defend the ML because people judge them by gender rather than as human beings.
From the start, the ML gave the FL a chance to uncover the truth rather than keep her in jail. She was a murder suspect carrying the same type of pen used by the assassins; the water was an intimidation tactic, not a personal vendetta.
When the case ended, he gave her the promised money and offered her a ride. Yet she hurled the silver coins at his head with full force. He grabbed her in anger, but this context is rarely acknowledged when people discuss how their physical boundaries first became blurred. Despite her uncalled-for insults about his ignorance of the needy’s struggles, he let her go. He fell for her purity, her morals & now whatever she does, it seems to fall under some scheming witch...... but lets not take their actions in isolation, let's look at their journey & surely you will fall in love with both of them. If we want to understand their relationship through a modern lens, think of the couples around us who have been soulmates for years, not people passing through one another’s lives every few months. Often, the person who sees our worst is also the one who brings out our best. We reveal sides of ourselves to the person we love that our parents, siblings, friends, and even our closest relatives may never witness. Our most unfiltered truths and our most extreme reactions are often reserved for that one person. Chang Xuan and Ping Jun have that kind of hold over each other.
I see Ping Jun as the embodiment of purity and love and I refuse to reduce her to a whore label because she offered her body to Chang Xuan, reneged on that promise, made him appear to be an attempted molester when he even didn't ask her to strip naked, or cut her wrist knowing he would let her go. Why because to me she would never make such bargain with just any man, just as she would never slap another man the way she slapped Chang Xuan. These extraordinary, deeply personal confrontations belong to the world the two of them have created together.
