That's one of the HUGE strengths of this drama. MANY scenes are complex, triggering different layers of emotions. Not just emotions, but also thoughts. For me it's not just the main characters (with plenty of multifaceted/emotionally complex-driven scenes), but I love how they delve into the side characters in a more layered way.
For example, Xinyue is smitten by CX, but due to her past, she knows she wants to be with a man who's not like that. She rejected CX and let him marry another woman, but that doesn't mean she's not sad/grieving. As a viewer, I can FEEL the complexity of her emotions as her logic clashes with her heart. It mimics real life, too. Even though I know my decision is logically right (for me) and I will not regret making a certain decision, that is also sometimes followed by a mixture of emotions (angst, grief, sorrow, etc.).
This drama is SO satisfying emotionally 'coz it makes me feel/think about A LOT of things he he he he...
This drama is SO rich in taste. I enjoy so many flavors. I'm thoroughly drained, but in a positive way. My heart has gone on so many roller-coaster rides. So many scenes make me feel so many different layers of emotions, executed well (some are much better at micro expressions than others). I love the way the characters interact with one another, the choice of scenes that enable the viewers to understand why they choose to do X but not Y. The intricate details of thoughts, emotions, dynamics between the characters...so many delicious moments that deliver a lot of the complexity that is the human journey.
You can like someone because of a certain trait, but that same trait can also bring about his downfall. You can have different bonds with different people because the dynamics/synergy you have with those people are all different. The scenes that move me and the scenes I can relate to are all complex and multifaceted. The emotions that they make me feel are tinged with a lot of colours and taste. What a feast! These are all combined with gorgeous cinematography and costumes, too. Ah, I can't stop gushing about this drama!

I feel that with Xiang Liu, it's clear that FL is attracted to him in some ways. Otherwise, she wouldn't have saved his scenes on the mirror and then she rewatched those scenes again when she was missing him. However, because of her childhood (lots of separation issues with her parents) and the rough years of her childhood as she ventured alone in the big world, she is always so wary about being attached to people, especially to the people that can't give her stability. She knows Xiang Liu can't leave his role as the general and that's not something she wants from a man.
That is why during their talk on the beach, she said she was afraid of Xiang Liu because there was a small possibility of her being able to fall in love with him, but she knew he wasn't the right one for her. Xiang Liu was at that time visibly upset and disappointed (so he left her on the beach to swim back to the other side).
I know XL and XY is impossible, but how about Ah Nian and Ru Shou? Hahahaha. Love their banters!
This was what I was telling myself. I loved it whenever Ru Shou appeared on screen ha ha ha ha ha...and when he mutters under his breath LOL!!!!! After all, Ah Nian did say herself that amongst all the guy candidates (to be a husband), Ru Shou was the best one...but I'm afraid poor Ru Shou would be suffering so much if they were married HAHAHAHAHAHAHH...
OMG! What a gem of a drama, but I'm glad I waited until all the episodes were added to youtube and subbed. I can watch it in HD! The beginning didn't grip me right away (though the beautiful scenery and everything made me feel so calm - it almost felt like a vlog), but then it started getting better and better (I'm only up to ep. 9 now). I'm savoring each episode slowly. I'm loving the OSTs, too.
This drama is probably the sweetest and cutest ever. I've never subconsciously smiled or grin THIS much watching an entire drama. So little angst level, MAXIMUM level of nostalgia. Their wedding scene took me back to my wedding day (one of the best decisions of my life!), their first date and first kiss reminded me of our first date and kiss. Ahhhh...what an awesome youth drama!

And I get what you mean. I would also dislike it if he had gotten the box way too easily (considering it took Shang Jue 12 days to be able to do it).
