he still literally dug a grave and put his wife in, burying her alive. he deserves whatever the plot has ready…
She did want the FL dead, that was just sarcasm. Since afterwards, he said "You ordered my mother and sister to ruin her reputation. Isn't that forcing me to kill her"?
And it was later on revealed that they wanted to kill all offsprings of Magistrate Xue (in case he passed down their secret), so it's confirmed they 100% wanted the FL dead.

I actually don't want to sympathize with him. I'm enjoying the drama, and I think it would be even more enjoyable if I was onboard with hating him when his "retribution" comes. I made this post to see if there's anything I'm overlooking that would make him more hateable, but so far there isnt (and everyone seemed to be misunderstanding him to be the one to ruin the FL's reputation when he didn't know until it already happened)
If he disobeyed the princess, not only will he & his family die, but the FL will also be killed anyway (after being tortured because the princess is sadistic & crazy). So, he chose the least bad outcome.

But it was literally explained why a simple divorce wouldn't work... the princess wanted her DEAD - there was no way around it. "Letting her be raped" - no, he did not know until it already happened.
did you miss the part where he litch dug a grave and tried to burry his own wife alive?? and how he also RUINED…
Isn't she basically #2 in power (so far)? Who's more powerful other than the Emperor (even he is afraid of her - remember how he reluctantly agreed to her reform for the entrance exam?)?
Based on what I've seen, it seems like a forced relationship. The dude is literally forced to kneel and get whipped all the time. I doubt he's together with the princess on his own accord.

How would he get the opportunity to talk to Duke Su / Emperor, and where would he get the evidence? Such accusations against someone as powerful as the Princess without sufficient, undeniable evidence will be fruitless at best, and (if she realizes he accused her) game over for him & his family at worst.

It was either that, or risk getting his family (& possibly him) killed instead. An "ideal" character, to us, would be willing to give up everything to save the FL and defy the Princess. But realistically? Did he have much choice?
Do the teary-eyed moments lessen the horrific agreement to torture his father in law, and kill his brother in…
But how much of a choice did he have when the sadistic Princess might've otherwise killed him & his family instead, if he didn't obey? He didn't set his wife up with another man. That was his mom and sister's doing (under the Princess's orders). He found out later.
Are we supposed to hate Shen Yurong? He was forced by the Princess to do what he did. He had many chances to bring down the FL (delay her entry into the academy, vote against her to make her lose the bet and be sent back to Zhennu hall, expose her true identity at the trial) but he didn't and always took her side. Unless he does some bad stuff later, I'm not cheering on the FL to take him down.
(Please don't reveal what happens in the novel)
edit: people replying to me seem to be misunderstanding. Shen Yurong did NOT set up the FL to be r*ped.
Love this drama!!!! Did they ever explain why Ji Shuran (the stepmom) wants so badly to get rid of Jiang Li? Or…
Because reputation and prestige mattered a lot in the past. Being the only legitimate daughter of a high ranking official brings a lot of perks, and Ji Shuran didn't want her daughter to have to share the spotlight with someone else.
I want to give this a try because I like the 2 leads, but I keep seeing videos on youtube calling the ML useless in the video title. Not a fan of dramas with a useless ML (or FL). Is he useless?
And it was later on revealed that they wanted to kill all offsprings of Magistrate Xue (in case he passed down their secret), so it's confirmed they 100% wanted the FL dead.
Tell me how a powerless scholar could have stopped King Cheng and Grand Princess's plan to kill the Xue family.
Him not exposing the FL during the trial and ruining the Princess's plan is direct counterproof to this claim.
If he disobeyed the princess, not only will he & his family die, but the FL will also be killed anyway (after being tortured because the princess is sadistic & crazy). So, he chose the least bad outcome.

"You ordered my sister and mother to ruin her reputation".
And his mother: "That's right, last night was all staged by me".

The ML is so... 😍
