The cavalry in the Warring States (China) had underbelly cinch rings, stirrup connections, and back saddle rings that were used to tie themselves to their horses in battle. Can not speak to the frequency of it but yes, the first recorded saddles (fabric to wood to leather) come from China.

As someone whos ridden since walking - thinking possible though not probable. Maybe belt/tie from saddle cinch rings (or underbelly ala ancient chinese saddles) around both of your thighs (tie down bottom of legs to stirrups 'loops'). Or, hella strong thighs/butt cheeks and still crippled (bareback)? It could happen. 😅
