Dog breath. Finding it hard to read the comments before catching up on the episodes - not as much spoiler control as we typically have. Yesterday was apparently take your spoiler to work day. While it is getting better today, the tension and anticipation of the trash slash and dash fight scenes is just too delicious to get a before watch heads up (including episode teaser which I typically devour). Arghhhhhh....
Why do gory ,'dirty', wizzy, sinister, u dead fight scenes make me feel like I am having a brain vacay? They are even letting the 'good guys' loose in the fight scenes. LUV. So far, it feels a bit like a stage play vs a drama given the low human body counts per scene though the lighting and set designs are spot on (pun intended).
The latest King, Liu Yi Jun, is one of my fav support actors (wait, did I just repeat myself again?) nice to see they 'glowed' him up to almost snack level. Enjoying Tong Meng Shi as Ye Zheng as he is so darn convincing slashing away at the baddies. Not sure about the sinister low breathy gravely voice of Xie Huai An coupled with the weepy tears. Will need to get used to it.
This is a well thought through and written review. I enjoyed it so much I actually read it twice. Its logical sound and I agree with most of what you had to say - including the 8 rating. Thank you.
Can not fault the acting from the veteren actors specifically. Tip top.
Chen Xiao has acting in his blood and he did not dissapoint. Some of his acting was nothing short of heart stopping. And, yes, agreed, it is a male centric drama and the character development of the females was lacking though not unexpected. After all they were not front and center in their own place and time in the late Qing Dynasty.
After ep 30 starts to falter in terms keeping audience interested. Your analysis is spot on! Good job
Appreciate your response. Yes, it started to unravel at episode 30 for me too. Then it got increasingly unsatisfactory - if not down right boring - from episode 33 forward.

Beginning: no complaints - 9.5.
Middle: Hit black ice and slid around - 8.00.
End: Forgot to open the parachute - 7.5
Acting: 10++
In general: Tried to stuff too much of the novel into too few episodes. This drama needed at least 50-55.
Would I/will I watch it again: eventually yes
