I think it was a deliberate directorial decision to give that unflattering haircut to Jake in the show where his role is a tough cop. Otherwise he looks like an idol, too handsome, his face is almost angelic in longer hair.

It is a realistic ending. TG was a gangster after all... he cannot escape without any punishment, especially when he wants to have a life with a policeman. He will probably be in jail for a few years and then reunite with A-fei. I do wish the show ended with him getting released from jail after a few years and A-fei waiting for him... that would have been such a cool ending.
