The first hour was unique and thrilling but the last quarter was very sappy and dramatic, and the stark tonal shift did this film a disservice. Also, unpopular opinion but Jun Ji Hyun's limited range was very apparent in this film. This was a script that didn't work in her favour. Having said that, I can see why many people would love this film. If you're tuning in for the romance or either of the leads, then this might be it but if you're tuning in for a well-written story or suspense, then this will disappoint.
I just realised I've watched all the dramas and movies you mentioned.. and gosh I love him so much. He is not just a looker but a fine fine actor. He's so criminally underrated here on MDL as with most Japanese actors.
I remember wanting to slap her character so bad in IWGP. HAHAHAHA Then I came to this page and realised she's been in so many other dramas I watched, and I can barely even remember her in those LOL
OMG I now know where I got that habit of going "wah wah wah.".it's probably due to Hiroki LOL DAMMNNNNNN I finally figured out where I learnt it from AFTER SO YEARS!
Also all of them are such jerks and yet so charming.. Makoto, King etc. 20 years ago, I wanted to slap Hikaru and Makoto's mum and that feeling hasn't changed HAHA And the mum with her sailor speech in E7 LMAOOOOOOOOO Makoto's reaction when Koyuki's story becomes more and more messed up like its so casual HAHAHHAAHA Abe Sadawo as the policeman is so damn useless it's hilarious I never understood Watanabe Ken's chracter - some times he looked like he hated Makoto and the yakuza, and sometimes he just seemed like a closeted fan. Also Makoto crying in E10 made me saddddd :( His mum in E11 awwwwwwwwwwwww so sweet. The Hikaru reveal was one of the things I remembered very clearly.. so not much of a surprise. The ending was heartwarming and full of heart <3
Even after all these years I love how chaotic this drama is and just how the characters were so clearly ahead of their time.. Also I just love how high everybody in this drama is I was expecting to dislike it as an adult but damn I think I love this even more than I did as a young teen.. I wish I could get a 'behind-the-scenes' of this drama.. bet Yosuke had so much fun sticking out his tongue and being all crazy HAHHAA
Kudo Kankuro be so lucky.. he always gets such great directors and editors for his scripts.. they fit his style perfectly and clearly love his writing. It wouldn't be the same without that edgy direction and cool editing. This one, Tiger and Dragon, Kisarazu Cat's Eye, Go!, Gomenne Seishun (though not as crazy).. so many of them.
This grounded and intricate character-driven journey of various adults seeking to liberate themselves broke the grand notion of liberation beautifully, leaving you with a message of how liberation is an interpersonal journey of self-empowerment, and being one step truer to yourself. That true version does not necessarily have to be the kindest or the nicest version of yourself, rather it is the self that you identify with and the self that you want to be, regardless of what others want or expect you to be.
Masterfully written and directed with restrained performances by the entire cast, this has to be one of the finest and most unpretentious slice-of-life dramas I've seen from South Korea in recent years. Each frame, each character, and each arc was written with utmost care and sensitivity without breaking from its flow or resorting to convenient tropes to push the story forward. They were not characters but people in flesh and blood, whose liberation notes gave me some ideas and inspiration for my own.
Highly highly recommended for a mature audience :)

Clearing my ever-growing watchlist before I start yet another drama HAHA
To be able to hold your own amongst the A1 cast.. damn he was a natural from his first role!
HAHAHAHA
