Without getting into spoilers, I do think the writing has done a good job of showing just how ridiculous things were back then (during any dynasty), EVERY choice, every comment, every convo is such a minefield. One thing wrong and you're dead because the emperor can just do that (what a time to be alive truly). I went down a rabbit hole to understand cisi (when the emperor told people to uhh remove themselves permanently) by ministers and the like and it was a HUGE deal and if you get in trouble, you really didn't have a lot of options.
So ZL is having to very carefully play a game, FTY is trying to keep everyone safe, and the emperor isn't bad, but he obvs has a goal in mind. Whew.

I REALLY hope she ends up getting the heck out of there with FTY's help. :/ It was really bad for her in the Yu house too, like Madame Yu was nice to her since she brought her in but he was of course the worst and FYK was terrible, and her maid was the WORST

The chapters with him I was reading at like 2am so I honestly forgot a lot of it, but he's a big deal because he's the only one the emperor trusts and he gives a lot of advice/has a lot of power so he's a big deal IF a person can get a hold of him.
Having her sister's husband (in the book) take the job means that now the Xie/her sister's fam continue to go up and there's a whole thing with a guy whose name I just blanked on (and might not even be in the show?) who is super mad about it so there's more of the same old politicking. I'm not sure how much of that will play out here because it looks like once Shen Congsi is appointed they move onto the next plot point.
The monk situation is slightly different in the book, he doesn't even see anyone unless he really wants to so his first meeting with FTY is very dramatic because no one expects he'll talk to her! He had to dip to the temple because of the previous emperor's drama, so they changed it up here, but the ask is the same, to have (in the book her sister's husband) get the job!

the book is hilarious because they all end up living on what sounds like an intersection so it feels like half the time it's just "this carriage went by that one and got stuck and now the ladies are looking at one another on the street" it was so silly, but it's exciting to see them here. at one point FTY's bringing back flowers and someone else's carriage gets stuck so then the coachman for that carriage doesn't wanna help and has to and Sanniang's husband gets to order him around. LOL.
I really hope General Mo and the other guys stay okay!!!

It's hard to know how long any of these situations last though so I'll be curious. It's a catch 22 to some extent because he's not really in the book all that much after he leaves for army stuff and isn't involved in a lot of the capital situations so to make it interesting for TV, they gotta put him in the capital and do minister style stuff, on the flipside who the heck is dying and why would they be on the verge of divorce unless like this pair's last show it's a plot LOL. At least they ARE getting married finally and will still be together at the end!
