Been wondering that too, but he explained why to the Marquis (Third Sister’s husband) several episodes ago, just before he left to search for the kidnapped Lanxiang. (Multi-tasked on that trip to Yangzhou, was it, anywho—he was looking for CP and Lanxiang). I forgot which episode that was, maybe 20 or so. I don’t fully remember his explanation, but saving former CP was supposed to help eliminate war or something.
Just reflecting a bit— I feel Ep 16 was that defining moment when it was firmly in Jinqi’s head that he wanted Lanxiang. Remember that stare-down he gave, flirty whispers in her ear. This was the moment. She was basically his already—in his mind.

Long ago when the drama and leads were first announced a year ago, I remember reading the drama synopsis and just couldn’t grasp what it was about, even after watching the initial trailer. Therefore, seeing that actual drama itself, it is so much better than I imagined. It is truly excellent.
When Jinqi said he was cold and Lanxiang said she couldn’t light a fire lest the smoke alert the enemy, I thought—why not lie with him and let your body heat warm him? That was a lost moment, dear Director. 😏

She does. I agree. I love many of her dramas. But, honestly, I wasn’t sure if this pairing could deliver believable chemistry. So, I can understand where the first commenter is coming from. The drama has thoroughly exceeded my expectations. I love the drama and the leads together.
