Man, the English subtitles are mediocre, at best average for this show. Not that they don't convey the general…
Subtitling is not the same as translation. There is no need for direct translation, and in fact, direct translations are often clunky and unnecessary. Therefore subtitlers have a lot of discretion in their work, which is interpretation of the scene as well as translation.
I read Chinese too, and I wouldn’t have a problem with the points you raise. Not every detail is relevant to telling the central story. The job of a translator is to convey the meaning of the scene rather than interpret each word of the actual dialogue. The detail about empress and consort rights being different is interesting but not essential, and in essence ‘you can’t’ was what the person was trying to say.
The start of episode one seemed like a previous intro for the FL.We've definitely seen her in this type of role…
Agree completely with your comment! Really bad show.
FL has done this role, funny, smart and outgoing before, she did it well in Romance of Tiger and Rose. But here her funny moments feel forced and are totally unbelievable.
ML is bad. I don’t know if he’s bad at acting, or the role is bad. But his interactions with the FL show him overacting, and being a complete moron for her. He simps so badly from the beginning, but especially when they are together that it grosses me out. It’s not sweet at all! He’s like a 35 year old man pretending to act like he’s a teenager. Gives me the creeps!!!
The plot! It’s boring and convoluted and long! What a disaster.
I thought it would be like JJY’s In a Class of her Own, which was plot light and generally fluffy. But this drama is bad at giving us either fluff and plot!
So happy to see Darren Chen come into his own from Meteor Garden! He’s cute and charismatic. This drama really showcased him as a leading man. The way he flirts! *melts* He’s just so fun!
This show was light and a joy to watch (for the most part) as the two leads really shone. The coach and ML uncle were uninteresting to me, and I skipped the bits of the drama with his mum and the angst. But with the help of the ff button, the romance overcame all the flaws for me. Solid chemistry. Overload of adorableness!
As an aside. I thought the FL looked much cuter with short hair! It really suited her.
Steven Zhang is like woah. His talent! The ability to act so many different characters and genres made my eyes experience a rebirth. No one else comes close now. No more lazy watching rubbish actors just for eye candy. Steven Zhang is my sun and stars 😍🤣
Last part was just absolutely unnecessary but I can just forget it. I enjoyed watching this and the ost are also…
It was necessary to get past the censorship in China. You can’t have body swapping, but you can have it if it’s a dream sequence or a story within the story.
Thank goodness it was only revealed at the end that it was fictional, so it didn’t take away from how brilliant the story was. You had already got to live the emotions and the journey of the characters. Kudos to the writer for doing that. Brilliant series! And Steven Zheng is perfection! Hilarious, good-looking, dreamy voice and charismatic!
I’m here because I really enjoyed JJY in The Legend of Yun Xi. I thought her acting was great in that, very natural and believable as the kind, mischievous and clever Yun Xi.
But in her modern drama (I include the Ruyi Pavillion special episodes) she looks too self-aware and it takes me out of the drama. Like her outfits and hair are fussier and she’s more concerned with looking perfect. I don’t think it’s her though, I think it’s the make up and costume dept that put her in too much make up and over coiffed hair. I don’t mean for her to be sans make up, but it is too much. Nobody looks like that all the time, with blow dried hair and matching outfit.
For example she had a scene in Love under the Moon where she’s on a swing in the snow, and she puts a scarf up to warm her face, but she can’t let it touch her face because of her lipstick, so the scene feels awkward. Like it’s more concerned with making her cute than allowing her to act naturally.
This is a random gripe, I know. But it is putting me off from watching this!
I haven’t started watching yet, but I really want to see the second couple, bandit/princess! I’ll be disappointed if they are sidelined. He seems sweet and bumbling and she’s got guts. My favourite combo!
From the clips I’ve seen the main couple don’t appeal to me. She looks a bit rough and rude. He’s… bad at acting? Both as a real actor and as a character pretending to be blind. And I don’t even have a high bar for acting! I can watch pretty much anything as long as the chemistry is there!
Ikr. I totally agree with you,. Usually I drop romance drama just because I can't stand the FL, I faund the FL's…
I agree, the FL can be the death of the drama for me. I don’t know why they think dim, bubbly and a stalker is the perfect character for a FL. Its not, it’s annoying.
I really also enjoyed:
Love is Sweet (modern romcom) both leads have lovely wardrobes (kdrama level), unusual for modern cdrama, haha. Both leads equally matched.
Romance of the Tiger and Rose (sort of historical Chinese drama (I say sort of because the FL is modern girl who finds herself stuck in ancient China) FL is very funny.
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (University drama) FL is bubbly but not stupid or a doormat, she also doesn’t worship the ground ML walks on.
Fall in Love (modern romcom) the leads don’t have any misunderstandings. It is less polished than, say, Love is Sweet because none of the actors are big names and it has a small budget, but I enjoyed it a lot!
This is going to be unpopular but I’m disappointed in Shen Yue. For me, she hasn’t developed since Meteor Garden (please don’t bash me! I love Shen Yue, I’ve watched most of her dramas and she’s really cute and lovely in variety shows).
But she’s really awkward, almost uncomfortable when she’s supposed to like someone (kiss scenes mainly). There’s also no gracefulness as a maturing girl, or a good portrayal of longing as part of a couple falling in love. It’s more obvious she’s lacking in this area when she’s paired with Jasper Liu, who is really attractive and sexy in a grown up way.
If you love her in this, that’s great. I just wanted to know if anyone thought the same as me.
i really don't like the changes they made from the original, it screwed up the pacing and made the character/relationship…
Thanks for letting us know. I’m really skeptical of this version anyway, the trailer made it look like a Jasper Liu fan service... and Shen yue doesn't seem particularly mature in this role. I liked the characters in the Korean version. She was kind and mature but a bit lost, he was childish, uptight, but also kind.
Also, because I’m coming from a comparative aspect with the kdrama, i really don't like Shen Yue’s clothes. I’ve never found a kdrama to have ugly clothes, but often find chinese productions do. This is one of those examples. Her hair is childish and her clothes big and ugly :(
I am pretty sure her hair changes later in the story. I have noticed the same strange single braid/plait has been…
I noticed that as well! I wish they’d given Shen Yue a more grown up style. The hairstyle she has in real life, with a grown out fringe and longer bob looks lovely.
Not about the plot or anything, but why do some dramas not change the main lead’s hair, EVER? It’s unrealistic when they have their hair tied up the same in the morning and night... after a bath... in the hospital. ALL the time with the signature hair.
Maybe they think we won’t recognise the FL character from other characters the actress has played if she changes her hair? O.o But it takes me out of the drama because it’s so fake. It happened in Lucky’s first love too, when she slept, bathed and woke up with the same (rubbish wig) hair!
I loved this. The FL was a breath of fresh air. She looks different from the typical fringe wearing baby-faced wide eyed girls they usually cast in university dramas. And her character says the things she thinks. This is AMAZING. She doesn’t just keep her worries bottled up and get mad at ML for no reason like a child. She respects the ML but doesn’t worship him, this is also good. At no point does she stalk him, go quiet in awe of his presence, write him a love note, or make him cakes. It is a healthy adult relationship.
I love Miles Wei, and he was perfect in this. I loved him since Fall in Love, I'm so glad he's getting ML parts now! So handsome.
The fashion and make up was spot on. Bad make up and clothes can really take you out of the production, but everything here was on point. Natural make up, nice clothing. I saw no caked on foundation.
Chemistry was excellent. Lots of butterflies. No unnecessary dramatics. I miss this drama already!

Give me my hours back!!!! (ー ー;)

Also should I watch this? haha.

Not that I disliked the look in The Eternal Love, but the promo pic here just made me go WOAH! (Love heart eyes emoji) haha
