I felt that Scholar Han was such a gentle and kind person so now they are going to make him a villain so we don't yearn for what could have been. All she wanted was a peaceful life with her parents and none of the competition/rivalry/survival tactics and plots that are inherent in nobility.

You seem to be talking about three very different things: charisma, beauty, and acting and trying to meld them together.
The actress has girl-next-door looks which for media means she is pretty (rather than average). She doesn't have the kind of aura that other actresses do but her charm is the sweetness and approachability. Her acting here (if you've seen her other works) is perfect for the role of a traumatized girl who wants to live a peaceful life with her adoptive parents. Who takes joy in small and beautiful moments.
I do think casting matters and for me an actor or actress should be attractive if they are the main lead (especially for romance or certain plots) but there is a spectrum of attractive and personal taste as well. If the drama keeps calling an actor or actress the most attractive of all and 2-3+ people are in love with them I expect them to be very hot and if they aren't then there is a cognitive dissonance. I find it more often that the FL is at least very pretty (compared to the average) while the ML is older/weird looking/terrible in some form whether acting or character.
In this drama the ML falls for the maid not because of her looks (which are nice) but because of her resourcefulness and her desire to protect people (starting with him and the women in his family but even the ML's former wife, the maid thinks "even she wants to live" and distracts the scholar). Gentle, graceful, lovely, compassionate that is the FL here.
I also am enjoying the other drama you mentioned Spring of the Blade. That one is all about beauty, every actress is gorgeous and the ML and SML are as well. The leads are a charismatic pair of vixens going after their revenge mission and their relationship dynamic is much more fun because it's a fast paced and much more fantastical story. Still the FL character is completely different there, she lives only to clear her mother's name. Chilling and lovely but a different tone and intent.
U right, I edited it to "highly unattractive" instead of ugly or rat face. If they were going to make one guy do plastic surgery to look like another guy, the original guy can't be 1 million times more beautiful and hot than the second guy. Only a man would write such nonsense. It's like if one of the most beautiful girls went and got surgery to look like some average woman with a frog face, why?
