Yeah, My issue with most of chinese dramas is exactly the same thing, They focus too much on the side characters.…
Have you watched TBoY? That's one drama where I didn't mind the screentime they gave to the side characters because most of the side characters were well written and unlike many other dramas, none of the side characters outstayed their welcome - they were introduced when appropriate and left when appropriate :)

I agree, it seems like he's an introvert who becomes more confident once he gets to know people and that's why he gets muddled when he's in front of large crowds of mostly strangers. I was really surprised to see how loud and relaxed he is on set in BTS videos compared to when he's on shows like Hi6. I'm the same way with people I'm unfamiliar with so I can understand if this is really the case with CY.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but I can't see why the emperor would make LLH his heir. Nobody outside that small group of people knows that the emperor's father is of Nanying descent rather than being the son of the previous emperor (and therefore has no claim to the throne), so I think it would be seen as a strange move to make someone who the outside world doesn't know is related to him his heir? In terms of why the emperor didn't kill LLH instead of just accepting the flower, plot armour or as my mother likes to say: 没戏做 😂 I agree that FDB and his father aren't a threat to the throne. I don't think any of the characters saw them as a threat, but I think LLH just wanted to find a way to ask the emperor to let them go lightly instead of punishing them and that was his way. Anyway, like I said, it's just my opinion 😊

I don't think they ever told us what the emperor was poisoned with? I doubt it was Bicha as LLH said the flower only has a 30% chance of curing his Bicha poison, whereas it would definitely cure whatever the emperor had been poisoned with. In EP40 (I think it was?) there's a sequence where LLH is shown presenting the flower to the emperor and it's one of the reasons why the emperor was willing to let FDB and his father go :)

It's definitely not a clear cut ending, but I love this open ending and I don't think it needs to be as sad or depressing as you're implying. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong - I completely respect everyone's opinion and enjoy trading thoughts with everyone on this page - I'm just presenting another point of view because I love this drama so much and it saddens me when people are angry or upset by the ending :')

Personally, I loved that final shot - I think it was executed beautifully. The final shot in the iQIYI version where it pans out, I always saw that as representing LLH disappearing from the world - whether that means he died (before or after being found on the beach), was spirited away by DFS and FDB to live in peace in a small village by the sea like in the novel, or something else is up to the viewer to decide. I saw someone post a screenshot from Weibo (I think) where the scriptwriter basically confirms this and confirms that the three did indeed meet on the beach.

This is just my opinion, but I think that showing LLH completely cured and running around the jianghu with FDB and DFS would be a huge disservice to the drama as I believe it's not in keeping with his character and the themes of MLC. I'm / NOT / against LLH having a happy ending and being cured, but I think it was the right decision to not show it as canon. Like LLH said in EP40, he doesn't want to die but with his remaining inner force / neili (yangzhouman) he can only do so much. Also as FDB said in EP40, now that LLH has revealed himself to be LXY, he can never go back to being LLH. Sure he can take on another identity, but now everyone in the jianghu knows that LXY actually survived for 10 years without anyone knowing, are they really going to accept that LLH's dead if he simply disappears again? He needed to 'die', that's why I think the scene where he jumps of the cliff in front of XZJ is important, because he needed someone to witness him 'die'. As long as people believe there's a chance LXY is alive, his friends, Sigu Men, etc will all be in danger. He truly believes that LLH disappearing from the world is the best option to keep everyone safe and for that reason, he is at peace with his decision to disappear (or die, depending on one's interpretation). Since he's at peace with his fate, I think it would be out of character for him to be running around desperately trying to find a cure. Since we've been told throughout the whole drama that it's extremely difficult to cure the Bicha poison, it would have been odd and too much of a deus ex machina and disservice to the drama for it to be canon for them to suddenly find a cure IMO. Even in the novel, he's alive but physically affected by Bicha (his vision is almost gone and one arm is paralysed), which is much more realistic than him suddenly becoming 100% cured IMO. If you scroll through the comments and Twitter, you'll see various solid theories on how he could have survived, so a happy ending is definitely possible - it's just not canon, which, for the reasons mentioned above, I believe was the right decision.

I also believe there's a beauty in accepting your fate and living the life you want even if it's for just another 3 months and like the OST song 一壶莲花醉 says, it's a case of choosing the ending you want and I truly believe this is the ending LLH is at peace with :)

Regarding your point about the emperor, I'm not sure if you've ever watched palace intrigue C-dramas, but it's not as simple as LLH promising not to rebel and the emperor accepting that. Even if LLH promises the emperor not to start a rebellion, a) all C-drama emperors are super paranoid (they're usually this way because court politics in Ancient China was extremely complicated, but that doesn't mean the emperor can't be a good ruler), b) the people around the emperor and others can always use LLH as an excuse or scapegoat to cause trouble - LLH can't command everyone to not use him as an excuse to influence power, and c) the emperor taking away what most people view as the Nanying prince's (i.e., LLH) only hope to survive is also a show of power to the court officials around him.

Anyway, like I said I respect your opinion and I don't think your opinion is wrong, I just wanted to present another point of view. MLC has a special place in my heart, so it's heartbreaking for me when others are disappointed in the ending :')

I can't move on either 😂 This is my first time posting comments on MDL and it's such a nice community on the MLC page. I'll continue to lurk until we all move onto CY's next drama 😊

That's interesting - they kept the same ending but they swapped the order of the shots and left out the last pan out 😲 Hmm, I think I must be one of the only people who prefers the IQIYI version!

Omg🤣🤣 CY is hilarious in Hello saterday🤣 Poor baby is not made for games🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So funny, how many times did they have to explain the rules and make exceptions for him and he still doesn't understand 🤣 Like Zelin said, I've never seen anyone play 三二一看这边 like CY 🤣 But XSY's 三二一看这边 skills lives up to DFS, respect! 👍

His expression when he's discovered is truly a "chef's kiss" 👌 There was no reason for him to wear the earrings and a paint a huadian as his face was covered anyway, but if it looks good on him why not 🤣

Do you mean this episode? On my laptop (not sure if it's just my laptop or what it's like for everyone else) I can't see any English subtitles but you can auto-translate it. I had a quick look and the auto-translate looks ok, there are some weird translations and mistranslations but you can catch most of it :)

It's nice to have another confirmation as I believe the scriptwriter also said this on Weibo or somewhere. 😊 It was clever of them to have FDB and DFS have that vague expression at the end. That's why I'm fascinated to know what the direction was - were they told react as if they'd seen XYZ on the beach, or just give us a vague reaction.

The more I think about this ending, the more I love it. I really like open endings anyway, but I think this one really fits the story and LLH's character. Plus I love the execution and symbolism of the last shot of LLH disappearing from the beach / world 😊

I can't really comment on the nature of the relationship between LLH and DFS in the novel as I haven't read much yet (I have the Chinese novel), but I went to the end first since everyone said it was different to the drama and DFS is there in the end :)

Two years after LLH fails to turn up at the battle, he's now living in a village by the East Sea (DFS's territory). The last scene of the novel (excluding the special/short story at the end) is LLH playing weiqi on the beach with someone who is implied to be DFS. DFS asks LLH if he really doesn't remember him, and when LLH says he does, there's a small tremor in DFS's voice as he asks him '我是。。。' (literally 'I am...', but I guess 'Who am I then?' makes more sense in English).

It's an open ending so it's up to you to decide if it's a happy or sad ending :) Since everyone's definition of a happy and sad ending, go with with feels right for you :) If it helps, I saw the scriptwriter says somewhere that FDB and DFS found LLH at the end of EP40.5 (the special), but whether he was alive or not is up to you ;)

I can't help but keep going back to all of CY's crying scenes - he plays tortured characters so well! I came across a BTS video that gave me an even greater appreciation for his skill, it was on Instagram so I can't link it here (I think it came from Weibo though if anyone recognises what I'm describing and has the link!).

CY is filming the scene when A Mian confronts him in the inn after he heals her with yangzhouman. He's still facing away from A Mian so CDL isn't there for the filming, so they have a staff member reading her lines. The staff member is reading the lines in a very bland manner (expected of course, since they're not an actor) and the director is calling out directions using a megaphone, but CY still manages to remain immersed and carry so much emotion in his performance 😊

I'm sure this sort of thing is standard practice in the film industry, but I rarely paid attention to BTS videos until MLC and I'm just in awe of how CY can maintain focus and emotion when all of that is going on BTS! I wonder if he needs a build up to start crying or if he can literally turn it on as soon as the director calls 'action' 😊

Lol I am the opposite. I am glad for the special
I find everyone's different interpretations so fascinating, because for me it's completely the opposite! For me, EP40 seems to more strongly suggest that LLH died; we see him coughing up blood whilst writing the letter, Guan (the doctor) says that he only had a month to live before (when FDB brought LLH to him and he suggested they go and see LLH's shiniang), but he used up nearly all his internal force fighting SGD, plus he saved Biqiu so it sounded like he was pretty much dead - plus it seemed (for me anyway) to end way too abruptly. At least with the special episode he defied expectations and lived on for three months, which can be interpreted in all kinds of ways of course :) I saw somewhere that the screenwriter confirmed that FDB and DFS found LLH but she wouldn't say whether he was alive or not, and that the meaning of the last shot in EP40.5 is that LLH disappeared from the world, but whether that means he died or hid away (like in the novel ending) is up the our interpretation :) Personally I find EP40.5 less sad for these reasons, but it's very interesting reading all the different ways we see the ending and how everyone's picked up on different things :)
