Maybe I've misunderstood then. In the first episode when granpa decides to resign or come clean (forgot exactly which ) and someone said something about letting the shens know too and granpa said if we do it together it'll give planned action. So the whole breaking off the engagement followed by the coup on the shens felt like a consequence of that. Also in the later episode granpa told jin qi that when he sees their family now he doesn't regret betraying the shens. Also immediately after the shens were persecuted granpa arranged for jin qi's marriage with tha zous for gaining political influence.
These may have made me misunderstand the situation.
The granpa's self-righteous words carry zero worth for me . Dude broke up jin xi's engagement to jia chan to save his and his family's a$$ and was one of the main reasons of her family's annihilation.
