I am very lenient with dramas, especially in the beginning. I latch on to the smallest things to propel me to finish a drama, however this drama is horrid. Watch it if it's the last drama that you've never seen. I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, I'm hoping this is from a small studio, because that's what it seems like.
Scenes don't make sense, let alone time (time of day or time passing by) and space (distance). The choreography is non-existent; they might as well be swinging swords in the air (quite literally what the FL does, it's like watching to 5 years playing with fake swords).
It's like the story is actually going on off screen and we're only viewing the scenes where the leads are talking to each other. If you think the synopsis is interesting, as I did, be ready to be disappointed.
The one saving grace is the FL, she can act (although slightly exaggerated). I liked Yu Zi Xuan part in this too.
I watch a report on the Vietnamese entertainment site on YouTube that said the FL bought the right to this story…
I've watched a lot of dramas, the FL is definitely not bad. In fact if what you said is true, I have respect for her for saving up and trying to do her best in an industry where it's about connections. I know a "million" FL that act worse than her and always get lead roles. This is my humble opinion of course.
Not sure if changing the storyline is even affected by her, but in reality I think they squeezed so much content from the novel into 40 episodes that there are some problems with the script, not the FL. The 40 episode cap is not their fault, and I suspect there are issues because of covid, because early on I actually heard audio from a ML that sounded like a Zoom meeting recording. Those issues were ironed out though.
To me the only reason why I completed this drama was because of the FL, her characters goes through many changes and she hits the mark. The Second Lead, Xiang Hao was particularly bad. Meng Shi played his role fine, but the characters was meh.
With that said, I suggest anyone that wants to watch this, go up to episode 10 at least, the first 3 episodes are a mess, but it's to be expected here in this formulaic romance drama that has too much content to squeeze into 40 episodes.
Happy ending, the only issue was that the Emperor and Empress died, but left a child. Haishi and Fang Zhu "together" and Zhuo Ying and Zheliu together.
I nice quick drama to watch one night. It's not high production and the actors are fairly young and new (they do ok), but it's worth the watch if this is your type of drama. I watched it on YouTube.

So far so good, I look forward to the rest of her career.
