Her selfish motives included moving herself up in society and helping her family (I think she wanted to be more affluent for herself, but she could also claim that if she is better off, then her family is better off too). The sinister thing is that she chose to cheat people of money (while looking like she works hard to gain their trust). Nothing wrong with trying to make more money to help your family, but she just did it the wrong way.

Also, the brother put the car beibei bought for him as loan collateral. Now that the company is gone, all the money they invested in the company is gone as well. I think the amount of money they invested can't simply be made up by a few shoes. The brother is considering mortgaging the house just to make up money.
