I find it funny as I've been getting into Cdramas and my Chinese friend told me they didn't get why I would because Kdramas and Western shows so much better! Then you got people who complain Western shows are becoming repetitive and unimaginative. And a popular Cdrama reviewer recently posted a video about if Cdramas are bad this year. Does familiarity breed contempt?

I think it's a 'reality' for people who are either dealing with an over consumption of something or still stuck in nostalgia or maybe a mix of the two. The media landscape is always changing even if we want certain things to stay a certain way, especially as cultures go through changes. What was popular 30,40,50 years ago is now different based on current political cultural landscapes. I do agree that Western influence is involved but not because of more 'sex, violence' etc as if anyone who knows and seen Korean cinema this has been there (Kdrama actors have been involved in explicit scenes in movies before starring in their cutesy dramas...) As with modernization and globalization, Korean society has become more lax with broadcasting and private networks are able to explore these themes more so it's not because all of a sudden Korean studios are into the display of sex and promiscuity because they only think the West is inclined towards this. It's always been an interest and exist in their entertainment since the late 90s boom of Korean cinema but the Western influence is more so because of competition is fiercer than ever with streaming and binge watch culture so these production companies are more willing to either bet into two directions they believe will make money, try to push the envelope for attention or go back to typical formulaic tropes.

the anger regarding the nudity is insane. this is a drama meant for older audiences, if you’re 12 you shouldn’t be watching it. if you’re an adult and this mad over a bunch of nude scenes — what can i say? while the argument that sometimes sex scenes are unnecessary is valid, that’s not what some of you if not most are expressing. you talk about nudity as if it’s something disgusting or weird when there’s nothing weird about the human body. and i’ve seen people use the word p*rn when talking about those scenes… you have to be a kid or be weird or be conservative to not be able to make the distinction between p*rn and a simulated sex scene

also, because some may be offended about what i said about some of you being conservative — there’s nothing wrong with being conservative, it’s YOUR life and YOUR lifestyle. being angry that strangers shed their clothes on camera for a tv series isn’t being conservative, it’s being weird

I used to like coming to the comment section for a quick reference on how people judged the show contrary to the long review section. Nowadays people are writing whole novels, however. Just get over yourselves, please.

Ou Hao and Joseph Zheng are not newcomers. They have been in the industry longer than Bai Lu. Just because they aren’t as popular Xiao Zhan or Yang Yang does not means they are newcomers.

Wait a minute.
Don't we watch these shows BECAUSE of the tropes?
I WANT to watch the bossy/cold CEO and the smart/unrecognized dependable office worker
I WANT to watch forced cohabitation, forgotten childhood friends, enemies to lovers, contract relationships, etc.
There's COMFORT in the predictability.
When my day is hard, I want to just relax into a sweet, lovey dovey romance or romcom (my preferred genres) and magic the world away; where i can let my mind just float along for the ride.
I KNOW I will get all the fun, fluff, and predictable drama I want BECAUSE of the tried and true tropes that are IN these shows.

As a westerner, I also loved reading Harlequin Romances when I was a teenager, (very predictable), and later in life, I watched Hallmark movies too. (where you KNEW the ONLY kiss you were going to get would be at the end, and the FL was going to be a florist, a baker, or a photographer. lol)

But that's WHY I watched/read them.
It's WHY I watch K, T, Thai, JP Romances.
I know what I signed up for.
I know I will usually be satisfied with the story, the romance, the heart. (even when the acting was not as good as it could have been. )

I realized what I like so much about this series. It feels like a Skandi-noir. Straight up story telling. The atmosphere is bleak, the tragedy and heartbreak of the collective a palpable thing, as much a part of the community as the skyline. Every character is grey but no less tragic for their faults.
The only character that isn’t mysterious is the new Detective. He is skeptical, observant and quick to see past the miasma of disgust caused by two gruesome murders and suspect that people are actively concealing what really happened to those girls.

This is a fantastic show. I’d say Hollywood quality but it’s better then that by a long shot.
