The reason why i gave this drama a try is because this drama is soo similar to Mysterious Love. and let me tell yall i LOVED mysterious love. Infact, so much that its in my all times fav list. I watched it within a night( gud ol quarantine days😍😍)so i AUTOMATICALLY love this drama from the start even tho its kinda trashy i agree as someone said below and this is basically MY KINDA trashy drama lmfao 😂But the better part is, this one has loadss of hot scenes one after another. IN ADDITION TO THAT, this one is 20 mins per eps which means theres no unnecessary blablas lmfao and ofc ml he is treat for the eyes :3
There was one comment here that intrigued me. It posited that viewers are just feeling nostalgic about old kdramas and if Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs are shown today, they would get the lowest scores. So I watched the dramas and this is what I found out: Boys Over Flowers mesmerized me throughout. Well, I found the FL too loud at first but her transformation from uncouth to ladylike is riveting. But the best transformation is that of the ML, from a bully to a sweetheart. I love dramas that show a character's growth and this one showed not just one but at least two characters undergoing dramatic growths. And the OST is one of the best I've heard in kdramas. I see why this drama holds a special place in viewers' hearts. As for The Heirs. I found the FL too melodramatic, with such a victim mentality that made the ML look more a bully than he is. As in Boys Over Flowers, the ML is just confused and clueless about how to treat somebody he cares about. I can thus see how his character could be misunderstood. But again, the growths of these characters are fantastic though angsty. But perhaps angst is what is missing in new kdramas? The credible transformation of a character that starts off villainous and ends up being a sweetheart entails a lot of angst. But it seems audiences nowadays complain about too much angst. So, kdrama producers are in a quandary: when they put a lot of angst, audiences complain. But a drama with no or minimal angst risks becoming flat and boring. After all, where there is no pain, there is no glory. In summary, It's not nostalgia. These "old" kdramas are really good. They drew me in and tugged at my heartstrings. They're angsty but perhaps it's the angst that made them compelling.
I have enjoyed K dramas since 2018 due to their portrayal of Korean culture and generally solid scripts and story telling. Once I find an actress that inspires me I will dive into their older works to get a better perspective. I have not got bored yet, but have refined my expectations and preferences.
My enjoyment of the K drama experience has been diluted by Social Media (SM). I have to tune out SM to retain the freshness, surprise and excitement of viewing a new series (such as Love Next Door) in its entirety in October. Release of 2 episodes a week reminds me of my old TV days, I prefer older product where all episodes are available. Obviously my beef is applicable to the management of the world wide product, not just K dramas.
It is hard to block out SM completely when I am on various platforms and follow many different topics of interest.
One of the biggest reasons I started watching Kdrama back in 2007-2008 was because of the uniqueness of Korean dramas. I particularly liked that most everything I watched was uplifting, hopeful, but in particular, there was a clear beginning and end. No waiting for another 'possible' season.
Another couple aspects of Korean shows I really enjoyed: 1) how subtitles were made. Certain Korean words used for family members, older women or men, or emotional responses to certain situations were included in the subtitles (with short translations) helped me to learn Korean language at the same time. 2) Occasional, quirky sounds, or graphics, of expression to enhance a moment or emotion. Like a sound made when someone blinks, or increased heartbeat when someone is excited to see a loved interest, etc. I remember one series during a fun fight scene, fight words were used on screen. Just made me smile. This practice was so different, I found it fun and increased my interest in Korean programming.
These practices have mostly stopped, not just with programming on platforms like Viki, but everywhere else as well. Which I find frustrating and sad.
When I noticed more and more Korean programming showing up on Netflix and other American streaming platforms, I worried about how our expectations and customs would impact the very things I loved about Korean programming. Especially when people started demanding more seasons. I hoped those who were in charge of deciding to give into these demands would hold their ground and let it be known, this was part of the uniqueness of Korean programming. I feel the same way with translations and inclusion of common Korean words as well as the quirky sounds.
There are other little things that used to happen frequently with Korean programming that I think are being lost as more of their programming is becoming common place in the U.S. I worry about how much more will be lost if those in charge of Korean programming don't stand firm on what makes their programming unique and why so many love what they do.
I find myself going back to Viki more often lately looking for shows that would not be found any where else, like historical period series/movies.

the best article ever, I have to admit that stalking MDL users' profile is one of my habits. The creative, and the aesthetic all inspire me to design my profile, and the journey of doing it is also wholesome.
To say I love this article is like to say nothing at all. I needed this like a glass of water on a hot day. I admit I spend an unhealthy amount of time lurking around MDL profiles - one of my favourite activities on this site. I really appreciate other people's sense of beauty and aesthetics, as well as the time they devoted to make their profiles so appealing. I draw inspiration from them. I even have a link list of my favourite profiles that I keep revisiting, because some people change their profiles every season and I love to check up on their updates. Some of them were mentioned in this article, some I've just discovered now, so thank you for writing this editorial. I started working on my profile 3 or 4 years ago and I still haven't finished the first version of it - I really admire people who have it in them to change their profile every now and then.
