I've watched nothing but historical dramas from the early 2010s for the past year and I love them. As someone mentioned, I stopped watching Western television years ago because I dislike the social engineering written in to the shows. I was so excited to find Korean dramas back in 2015. They were exactly my speed. Now, with the modern dramas, I'm beginning to see a creep of Western into them (i.e. brain surgeon/tech CEO wife with a goofy unemployed husband...). Luckily, there are years and years of shows I missed to watch.
New K-dramas are highly overrated with more users rating them. That is why, a drama of 2010, can be way better than a 2024 one objectively but will have low ratings than 2024 one. Which will be percieved differently in public eye. Also most high rated dramas are stretched. Average K-drama length should be of 5-6 hours rather than 18hours stretched.. So trying low rating dramas ain't bad if they're old, which is, pre 2015.
I love the whole concept behind this article because I have been forced to watch a lot of horrible dramas this year and can relate. However, it's often the low rated dramas that will give you the most surprises or something to react to. Sometimes you can even find hidden gems that didn't do well because they were weird for their time lol. Ratings are subjective after all. It's a very interesting experience.
I never watch a drama based on ratings. As long as the premise sounds interesting, I’ll give it a try. There are numerous dramas where I absolutely loved but others hated, and vice versa. We all have different taste and preferences after all 😊
I am loyal only to good plots and writing. This post reminded me of the many things I found distasteful in modern day kdramas. I've stopped kdramas for about 3 or 4 years, with the exception of bls. Apart from what you mentioned, kdrama is like a modelling show. I'm not expecting it to be artsy but exploiting the popularity of kdramas to peddle brands and products is tacky and distasteful. To make it worst, most of these fashion shows are full of plot holes and story lines fitting only for dummy viewers. Are the producers aware of the long term effects forgoing professionalism for profits?? But looking through the comments, I'm rather surprised at the number of low intellect and shallow viewers out there. As long as they're good looking I realised. That's the only criteria??? These commentators are offended if you tell the truth about the drama. Seriously these jokers.
In my era, we bought cds. Kdrama was already huge then. Shops appeared all over the country. We binge watched the whole thing in 1 to 3 days. There were outdoor setting tours for tourists and I went to one of them (for Winter Sonata).
Later came a period where streaming was common but Netflix has yet to become a popular entree. I used to watch alot more dramas and variety shows. Those productions were decent.
Gone are those days. I value my intellect.
I'm currently only watching one kvariety show(I Live Alone) and bls related stuff. Unsure why but it seems like the better writers went to variety shows and bls.
I started watching Kdrama in 2008, back then we barely had subtitles and Viki and too "i" at the end and was just a student project! While I love some of the changes, with fewer people losing their memory after a car accident 😁... Nowadays, I feel that watching Kdrama is like watching another US show with a big dose of MSG in it. We still have great shows, but I sadly don't feel the thrill anymore!
I started watching K-drama/movies 2019. Took me a few years to catch up watching those good/famous/popular one. After over 500 movies and 200 drama, couldn’t find any good one to watch anymore. My attention suddenly switch to C-drama especially the C-historical drama. Might take me a few years to catch up good/popular C-drama.
I’ve been sounding the drum even before 2020 but yes kdramas are dropping in quality like it’s insane that there’s nothing that matches the quality of Beyond Evil In kdramas but I can find that easily with other countries dramas. I was super weary in the investment of Netflix and the like into kdramas cause unlike China and Japan they’re far more swayed in westernisation. I don’t view the nudity and sex as westernisation as it’s plenty in kmovies but they haven’t done a smooth transition into those topics which is bizarre considering kmovies
