Well, it took three and three-quarter episodes, but we finally got an authentically and powerfully moving scene. You know the one I'm talking about. PJ Mahidol is the best actor in this show. I was not ready for that, in a good way. Then, of course, Chian once again revealed his slimy nature. But even that scene was pretty powerful and above all, at last primally true.
I have a major question: How was Chian the Snake able to see that text exchange between FM and Baabin?
Overall to this point, this strikes me as being full of outstanding acting/direction/production values in service of a sub-par, trivial story line. Baabin is the one likeable character and at this rate, who knows? He may turn out to have scales too. That's OK though...at least this tale finally got some juice to it.
So many neurotic, unhappy young men chasing other neurotic, unhappy young men while playing other neurotic, unhappy young men, and not one of them gets anything fulfilling out of it...this show makes me sad in many ways.
No one is even getting laid, which is odd...players get laid, no?
These dudes are only interested in playing with minds/psyches/hearts, not actual human flesh, which would require physical contact and endanger their gel nails; possibly leaving traces of body fluids and other nasty stuff in the crevices and god knows we can't have that.
I have comments about two of your questions. I don't think there is a reason someone likes other person. You just…
Wrong.
People pretending they like people because they "just do" is why many people are in shitty relationships. Neurotic impulses draw us in - and there is a lot of this going on in this show - but the last thing we want to do is look at WHY we're drawn in, because hey, that's no fun. "Love just IS" is BS. If you don't see all the neurotic shit going on in this show, you're missing most of the plot.
You may be unaware of your reasons for liking someone but they are there. You may not want to understand your reasons for liking someone but they are still there... often fucking up your life.
You should have asked for clarification if you didn't understand the second question. Instead, you used it as an excuse to go into a preachy rant about your on-trend opinions regarding sexuality and romance. I have no interest in those.
Meh. I've gone from a 10 to a 6 on this show in two episodes. Which might be a great sign of roller-coaster wild shit to come, but...kind of at a yuck place right now.
Questions: Why does FouMod like Chian? At all. I've been given nothing. Dude is a player. Even when he comes clean and seems to finally get honest, it turns out to be a tactic to keep...playin'... When they sat together at the train stop, they did not talk ONCE, about anything. At all. What's this alleged fatal attraction all about? Chian is creepy and strangely blank in the eyes...like when FM confessed, the look back was a wide open smile with dead eyes above and nothing else. Serial killer eyes.
Is the friends' musical group intentionally bad? FM's singing is not just average, it is horrible, as in out of tune. Is this considered a cool thing? Not buying it. If FM had ten percent as much vocal talent as he does charisma he'd be a superstar, but he doesn't have even 1% as much.
The gel nails thing as a central theme has already run its course. Boring. Stupid. Lame. After this, I'll be researching to see if the director/producers are hooked up with or own a chain of nail shops. Nothing else makes sense.
What was with the first ten minutes of episode 1, during which FM appeared to be at least 40% to mostly straight? We've seen nothing of that person he seemed to be since that one scene. Did that take place in an alternate universe? Was it intentional, clunky, misdirection? Seems unlikely, given this director's work.
Major red flags up on this production's integrity...we shall see. It seems to be headed into Fluff Town with an occasional trek into a dark alley here and there. But not too far in...just a peek. Weird show.
Episode 2: This show is stressing me out majorly. I'm only halfway through this ep but have to take a break. What's going on is that I'm a fossil, as in late-year Boomer. My kids are late-year Millenials. I grew up and lived into my late 30s with NONE of the Internet/phone/social media that now defines our existences. Thus, although I've been well-aware of how integral all of the above are to the daily lives of late Millenials/GenZ/GenAlphas, it is a whole other level to experience the lives of these characters as though I'm inside that milieu from moment to moment.
Here's the thing: As far as angst/crushes/flirting/waiting/wondering/speculating/etc. in teen romance/relationships goes, there is nothing new here. I experienced all of that to a painful degree back in the dark ages. What's new is not only the HOW of all this, ie. phones, online, texts, emails, IG, Tik Tok (I know only fossils like me are on FB anymore), but mostly that the HOW has magnified the stress of the those common early relationship emotions by a factor of at least a hundred, no lie.
I used to wonder/wait/worry from encounter to encounter with a crush, just like these characters. But whereas I did that at a low-grade level for hours or as much as a day or more until I happened to run into the person at school, an event, or in a land-line phone call, NOW you all get to stress out from minute-to-minute and it never stops. Because as soon as you send a just-right text, you're immediately wondering how it landed and if it was misinterpreted, and omg, did I fuck up? and shit, will they reply in 2 minutes or ten minutes or not at all, and depending on the length of time, what does it mean, exactly? Does it mean they are delaying in a strategic way or because they don't care much? Or if they answer immediately, is it because they like me, or because they're a player who answers all the people they're keeping on the hook immediately?
I'm getting stressed out just writing this...those of you who have grown up with what I'm talking about...are you aware of the stress level? Do you recognize it as heightened or is it thought of as normal? Well, it IS normal for you, but does it HAVE to be? lol I'm going to have to take a shit just to offload some of the angst this show is throwing on me...
Now, I trust this director, so I'm assuming I'm meant to feel what I'm feeling. At the same time, I'm way outside the demo for this show, so I'm wondering how this is being received by those it's intended for. Is this drama serving as a mirror, showing some of what you may not have noticed before in the way you live from day to day, moment to moment or...no?
God, I do not like Monkey Brows at all. I do not get MC's obsessive attraction to him. He's not attractive, he's creepy, he's manipulative and a player, he's hot/cold and clearly likes toying with people...my understanding is that MC knows all of this and yet...and yet...he acts like a silly schoolgirl over MB. wtf? At the same time I get that there are nine and a half more hours of this thing to come and much will be revealed and I'm cool with that, but lord; don't know if I can stand the ongoing angst in ME. lol
Add to all the above the gel-nails, the stickers, the shit hanging off guitars/backpacks/phones, the texting/photo-taking/photo-editing/IG-checking/messaging/blah blah blahing and it's a LOT. I want to force these kids onto a bus, strip off everything but their clothes, drive them to a park, force them to sit down on the grass and just...be...and see what happens. I honestly don't know what would take place next.
Either or all ways, this show is having a powerful impact on me. I'm curious if I'm up for it though. I've already been bored a bit with the obsessive SM behaviors.
All that said, so much to love here in the areas of acting/direction/locations/ambience/OST/cinematography/costumes/lighting/everything. This might be the most atmospherically authentic BL I've seen. There are so many incredibly accurate and creative little touches and details going on I'll be picking up on new ones during my ninth watch. And the MC actor continues to amaze. The jerk-off scene: lol. Yes.
As for Monkey Brows, help please: There is a years-back BL actor, also Thai I believe, he reminds me of but I can't quite recall who it is. ???
I think I can get back to the rest of ep. 1 now... :D
Mystery solved: Even though I dropped it after a few eps and rated it 1/10, I must have seen MB in "Our Days" and that look stuck with me...not in a good way. But again, I love this director, so I'm going to trust he cast Pide for good reason...maybe I'll find out why.
Episode 1:First, wow.Second, in one hour this show has presented more substance and quality everything than all…
Our angelic and hilarious MC was warned clearly and early on that Monkey Brows is a PLAYAH. Then, when he spoke with Monkey Brows about getting gel jobs done together, it became clear as fucking day in hell that the guy IS a massive player. Not only that, but he encouraged MC to be a massive player too. He's an ice-cold creep, it seems to me, and not a good person. Even his friend the dancer was clear on that, at least to the extent of never being the type of person he'd date, so....WHY is MC so over the moon for him?
I can buy being massively attracted and wanting to see what might develop, and continuing down that path even after the helpful warning from the friend, but having talked with the guy and having the warning and vibes confirmed so emphatically, why would he immediately go into using his apparent BFF to spark jealousy in return?
To me, the more believable reaction from this character would be disappointment, hurt, and a bit of anger, which we saw when they spoke; but a continued interest in the dude? Nah... help?
The creepiest part about Monkey Brows is that he is deliberately leading MC to think he too is interested, but then turning on a dime and acting as if he's not so interested but not in a coherent way...he is toying with him. So why not follow through, get in his pants, and THEN blow him off? Perhaps he believes an early blow-off will only make MC all the more interested, in which case he is a fiendishly good judge of a person's weak spots, which makes him all the more...CREEPY.
Anyway...I'm good with confusion, angst, drama, creepiness, etc. so I'm fine, just looking for clarity if I can get it. Thoughts, anyone?
Episode 1: First, wow. Second, in one hour this show has presented more substance and quality everything than all Thai BLs since 2020 combined. Coming from the director of ITSAY/IPYTM, this is unsurprising.
I have every feeling from delight to ick, and I'm good with that. I like a big dose of ick to offset any fluff that might wander into a show and there is quite a bit of that here in one huge respect: the NAILS. So please help me, if you can: Is it common in Thailand for guys, gay OR straight or in-between, to wear these extravagant, intricate nail designs? I googled this info and while I saw plenty about how it is much more common than it used to be for straight men to have manis and pedis, I found nothing regarding the wildly creative styles I'm seeing in this show.
Another thing that has me going "hmmm..." is that in the first ten minutes, our hero seemed one hundred percent straight; then five minutes later he seems to have become one hundred percent gay. Please don't rag on me that this is a spoiler, as we get all this info in the first 15 minutes. Now, I get that he may be bi/pan/mega/gay-curious/straight-curious/nada/strata/whatever, but this extreme, black/white swing so early in the show has me going wtf? And that too is fine...wtf? can be a very good thing in a plot.
And I know this director is far too skilled and purposeful in his storytelling to throw shit in as misdirection, again...wtf?
Also, getting massive creep vibes from Monkey Brows. As in, I might have thought he was OK until I observed him unobserved and saw how...creepy he is. I'm pulling stalker/psychopath/serial killer here and I doubt that's an accident. Relatedly, I have one final matter on which to seek guidance, which may well be a slight spoiler, so I will hide it thus as a reply to this comment behind the spoiler tag below. Help please. :)
F**********************************************k...best thing out of Thailand since ITSAY/IPYTM, and I stopped halfway through the first episode to post this comment. I am blown away already.
I had read the synopsis weeks ago and skipped it as it sounded like some queenie thing out of the Philippines. Why didn't someone SAY this is by the director of ITSAY/IPYTM, the #3 and #4 BLs on my best BLs list? lol I would have been here for the first ep. Although actually, I'm glad I wasn't, as I get to binge the first five eps now. :D
This New actor is a freaking STAR. From the moment he gave that girl the side-eye when she closed out two DMs within the first two minutes of the show, which caused me to LOL like a hyena, I knew this was no ordinary actor, BL or otherwise. Everything I've seen from him in the ensuing 25 minutes has lived up to that impression. What a fucking find!! When he cried/stopped/cried/stopped afterward at the mall and then next he was on the sticker-covered toilet, I'm dying...I have a thing for lanky/skinny guys like him anyway. When he finishes growing up and filling out...wow, please come to Hollywood, kid. :D
This director is the absolute bomb. EVERY character I've encountered in half an hour feels like a real person...the natural/real vibe is stunning. The cinematography/blocking/music/holy shit, this is good. It's no surprise he also did the Jeff Satur film vehicle Paradise of Thorns, the first good Thai film in years.
Just fuck...I'm beyond happy to look forward to watching and re-watching this show and I know I'm blubbering after half an hour, but I've ragged on so many bad Thai BLs over the last four years that I feel the need to give credit where due. :D
"God help us, another TOOTW (Turd Out Of TaiWan). At this rate, that island paradise will soon catch up with the…
Hey Lyson, I just started Gelboys and after 2:05 minutes had to come back and tell you I already got more laughs and charm out of it than the last 15 Thai shows I've tried. lol
That multi-screen online classroom, the hilarious teacher and the "phlegm" explanation, the guy and girl "frouple"....such GREAT, subtle acting. When those DMs to her came in and she closed them, the look on HER face and then on HIS face...omg, I laughed out loud. hahaha...I am already crushing on that young man. The sour side-eye he gave her, that's when I laughed.
Then we went into the theme song...it all seems several levels above normal Thai drek after two minutes. I'm pushing my expectations back down, but what a great start.
Truth is, I had read the synopsis to this show and decided to not even give it a look. It sounded like the sort of "everyone is a stereotypical queen"-type show that drives me nuts out of the Philippines. And I'm a sucker for straight-but-gay-curious plot lines.
Probably most people don't mind, not all dyed hair is supposed to look natural
I agree with that, though it seems odd that a no-nonsense, hard-ass, business negotiator would be dyeing his hair white/silver like some kpop idol. That aside, LJH's white/silver bob is quite obviously a WIG. How many hard-ass, business negotiators wear silver-white WIGS to work? Perhaps his character does drag and forgot to take it off after a particularly rough night...?
As for the older actor in his role, it is a shoe-polish streak-job AND a wig. lol Make that make sense. :)
Sure they do, Pinky. Look, I get that you're the director's mom, but those fake tresses are amateur hour. Tell your son to fire the head of the makeup team. The older actor's hair looks as if it was done with white shoe polish, like we used to use when I was in high school plays.
Tell your son hello for me, and I'm sorry about the hair.
Never mind...I just googled it. :D
Problem is...clearly, none of these nail queens are Muslim. :)

On edit: Regarding Monkey Brows' doppelganger, could it be:
Off? https://kisskh.at/people/10535-adulkittiporn-jumpol
I don't think so. Off lacks the creepiness I see in MB.
Maybe it's Boat! https://kisskh.at/people/33645-boat-anakame-binsaman
Again though...creepiness missing.
Drake? https://kisskh.at/people/15679-laedeke-satbut
Creepiness still missing...
Fluke? https://kisskh.at/people/8188-lohanan-teerapat
Mayyyyyyyybe...
