These themes have been presented with greater skill and effectiveness many times before and will be again in the future. This flick is cliche'd, riddled with plot holes, full of unsympathetic characters, and worst of all, it's boring/overlong.
There is one appealing, believable character, the Blasian kid. However, his character is marred by the fact that we're asked to believe a guy like him would find Yuta attractive and charismatic. Same goes for Kou. But then, I never found Yuta types interesting or attractive, even in high school. He's a bully/loser who plays the rebel from a protected (or so he thought) position of privilege. If I'm to believe he WANTED to get himself removed from that protected perch and was acting passive-aggressively to make it happen, I didn't see that on the screen.
I saw/felt no reason why this group of supposed friends was drawn to each other. Also, not believable that the little gay guy and the Lesbian were actually romantically attached. Spare me. lol Perhaps the writers' most annoying flub was to assume the audience weren't owed an explanation as to how the yellow sports car was placed in that impossible position. "It's a metaphor, so we don't need to explain!" doesn't cut it.
Overall, the movie took potentially gripping subject matter and made it dull. Oh, and that intellectual/rebel chick. ugh. Please.

P.S. Nobody listens to that soulless techno music when they're sober. Its purpose is to rave to while you're on booze and drugs. I laughed every time they teed it up and acted like it was totally hot. Plus, it was BAD techno.

With a few notable exceptions (Hello, Fighting Mr. 2nd! lol), it's remarkable how aligned our ratings are.
