Epi 24 and 25 were so good omg. It was laughter, tears all at once. The writing and characterization of this drama is brilliant. CSS and Emperor, Empress interaction was too funny. LBY proposal to CSS had me swooning. But CSS mom, oh dear! She doesn't deserve to be called CSS mother. No matter how good the intention is, one just doesn't publicly humiliate their own daughter this way. She is just terrible. CSS is a beautifully written character and Lusi has made me her fan with this role.
I am confused about the relationships. It rarely happens to me with other costume/historical dramas even if there are many character but somehow I can't keep track of all the people here. Princess/Consort Ruyang is the 3rd princess' maternal grandmother, right? What exactly is her title here? And does that mean the 5th princess is engaged to her grandson? And is Ling Buyi's stepmom his mom's cousin?
TBH this drama to me is overrated and overhyped - 2 main reasons 1) I did not feel the love connection between…
I don't know why you find this weird but LBY proposed because he was already in love with Shaoshang. She falls in love later. Back in those days, people didn't always marry because they were in love. Sometimes people got engaged/married first. Pretty much everyone was expected to marry at a certain age. Different times.
Part 2 explains more and that’s also where we meet Yuan Shanjian family.
Thanks. Still a bit confused though because Lord Yong's family is integral to part 1 so I wanted to know if they are related to the royal family or not. I don't mind spoilers.
Anyone kno if this drama is more popular than the long ballad in terms of views and ratings
TLB was very popular during it's run and it also won some awards domestically and internationally. But in comparison LLTG has a higher douban rating and higher views. Also, LLTG cp is way more popular than TLB cp. Some people also don't like older FL-younger ML pairing by default, so there's that.
I'm on episode 4 and the FL's family is really hard to watch. Only the father seems like a good person at this…
I had the same issue as you. I found the first 4 epis unbearable because of CSS's family. But now I have finished 20 epis and trust me, it really does get better. Just wait for a few episodes and you'll start enjoying it. There are more family members that haven't been introduced yet. There are nice people in the Cheng family too.
I am on epi 20 and a bit confused about a few things. Can someone please clarify? Is Lord Yong and Xiao's family related to the royal family? If so, then how? Also which family does Yuan Shanjian come from?
Want to comment on a rarely discussed topic regarding The Long Ballad….. have to say I’ve rewatched like 2-3…
Lao Zi/ Lao Tzu is the founder of Taoism, not Confucianism. Both are different philosophies. Changge's whole journey is about self-realization and finding her true path. This is why she acts rash before and suffers the consequences of it. Later when she realizes what she actually wants, which is peace and protecting her people, she abandons her revenge plan. During their separation both Asun and Changge realize what they really want and they actually want the same thing. The whole show is about all these people finding their purpose in life, whether it's Changge, Asun, Leyan or Hao Du or even Minister Du and the Emperor. Everyone has a path. Which is why in the end, all these people, despite their differences, are able to find a common ground. The story of TLB is actually really deep in that sense.
Many of these costume cdramas, whether historical/wuxia/xianxia have these philosophical concepts within them. Many of the dialogues are often philosophical quotes or taken from ancients poems and literature.
Whether it's this show or others, A lot of the deeper meanings are lost in the Netflix translations coz they just simplify everything or translate everything to English. Try watching on YT, Viki or their app. I am watching on YT and they refer to the Tao as Tao. That will give you a better understanding.
I don't if this has been discussed here before but the actors playing Wei Shuyu and Ashile Sher, Alen and Wa'er are both really good actors. Out of the mains, Wei Shuyu is the least interesting character but he really managed to portray the subtlety of the character well. A lesser actor would have made him a really flat, two dimensional characters. I just finished epi 44 and Wa'er really shines in these last few episodes.

Empress Xiao and the young prince are Khatun's family members, right? So why was she holding them captive? Someone please clarify.
