You're exactly right that it is similar to how everyone loves Elizabeth's sparkling personality but Anne's personality may be harder to appreciate because her good qualities are not as readily apparent. She has been neglected by her family and therefore has lower confidence in herself but Anne still developed a quiet strength. Xu Qin lost her biological parents and has been raised in an excessively restrictive loveless environment so she is not allowed to have her own point of view but she has still managed to work towards her independence by working in medicine. Like Anne was the one who could be counted on to take care of people, I'm seeing quiet strength similarities in this drama through FL's scenes caring for patients in the hospital.

Persuasion has always been my favorite Jane Austen because it yanked at my heart and I was so sympathetic about her regretting a decision that she was persuaded into, it seemed like the reasonable decision at the time. The couple here has similar class differences and the FL got bullied into breaking up with her boyfriend. Even though it's not romantic, I think it was reasonable that she would not abandon her family and run off with her high school boyfriend.
Really glad both couples have a second chance.

It's been awhile since I read it, thanks for pulling up the details. I was under the impression that Song Yan knew. But things really do remain ambiguous in the novel. I am guessing for the drama that Song Yan is extra terse and rude to Jiang Yu because he knows. I guess we'll see

ML is flawed too, I'm glad the drama is showing both the leads' flaws that they will presumably overcome.

There is another reason for him being especially rude to Jiang Yu. He is his half brother. Their mother abandoned Song Yan for a man with money. He looked for her and found out she had a new family.

yes this is true, as other people have shared the references. this is why song yan has a sensitivity about greed. his mother left his dad for someone with money and had jiang yu. song yan knows about jiang yu because he tried looking for his mother once. i think this is why in the drama songyan was rude to jiang yu and refused to give his wechat (this part was drama original, they didn't interact much in the novel). it is unclear whether jiangyu knows

He's playing this difficult role perfectly!! i think he's a pretty underappreciated actor

it's totally valid not to like a character even if you know why they are the way they are and i think it was intentional that she is not very likable at this point. but hopefully, for your watching experience, you will dislike her less as she has her character development.

it's just another example of songyan's love, he didn't want to damage her relationship with her family even if they didn't treat him well

You're exactly right. Even working as a doctor was an act of rebellion on her part, her mom does not approve. She's working on her backbone with regards to her family. It is hard for her and I think especially understandable with her background. Even her brother who is not adopted struggles with that mother and has his coping mechanisms.

i feel like it is easier to read than the other one

not too abnormal for cdrama, makes it hard for me to go back to watching other countries' airing dramas, waiting every week for one or two eps
