it is a happy ending and he comes back. there is a special episode that shows Duke Su and XFF's life after his return. you can look for it on youtube or bilibili. without the epilogue, based on my understanding of the entire story and the characters, i felt that he returned in the ending.

my interpretation of her expression was that she had been waiting and waiting for him to come back. given he was far away, she was cautious or hesitant to be too happy without knowing for sure. but that said, they could have made it more obvious without needing the epilogue. for me, after going through the journey with them and understanding all the characters, i felt that it was clear he was alive because the emperor would have done all he could to make sure Duke Su was fine. and, it's not in XFF's nature to not do something to help him. it may sound like grabbing at straws but, the relationship between Duke Su and the Emperor were really strong and XFF is not one to just sit still waiting.

I first noticed him in One and Only. I hated his character there because he played it so well, lol. From then on, I followed him to see what other dramas he did!

Yeah, the ending is contentious like The Double. I really liked the drama, but understand why some people may not like it. I really liked WXY’s acting in it, so different from The Double, Story of Kunning Palace, One and Only, and Perfect Match. My favorite thus far is The Double.

Yes, because of all the evil acts she committed, I really wanted her to suffer in penance. However, I felt so sorry for her in this scene. It was hauntingly beautiful, just like SYR’s finale scene. 😢

I think she did at one point try to grab the shovel from SYR. However, the moment he hit her was when he had just told her that both her father and brother were dead.. She was in shock at this point so stopped thinking about herself for a quick moment when SYR suddenly whacked her. I think she was also still coming out of the effects from the drugs that SYR gave her in the carriage so was just trying to make sense of everything that was happening. We know SYR was trying to kill her because we don’t have any history with him, but I think she had been happily married to him for many years so it’s understandable if she couldn’t believe he would try to kill her all of a sudden. That said, what makes any drama wonderful is that people can interpret them differently based on their experiences and tastes. I can also understand your viewpoint. But for me personally, I enjoyed the drama and the characters.
