wow 11 was so good Lu is also smart he did the right things to save her . but he already knew?? yes we were suspicious…
I think he had an inkling of suspicion because she doesn't do breathy little girl voice, plus no rage fuelled destruction. he saw her hands which had scars. If you remember the ep where they visited the in-laws? In the carriage he holds a ladle up, the maid tries to take it but he waits for the FL to pour him some water and he sees her hands with the Knicks, OG would have skin without flaw. Plus, the dance at in-law-gran's birthday. It's like he says later, too strenuous and too downmarket for a lady of privilege to do...so I think he's gradually figuring it out, And he doesn't reveal it because his primary goal is to keep the 'villain' he knows close at hand, and to never let crazy twin come near him, his family or his bed.
I agree, they could have given her some nuance. she's portrayed as a pretty dumb sociopath. And, yes she's great at manipulating people and acting like the victim but that falls apart the second things don't go her way and out comes the crazy. At this point, plot holes are the only logical explanation for why someone hasn't locked her up in the ancestral temple or sent her to a family funded ye-old timey monastery so she can't shame the family and get them all killed. I guess, granny was definitely on to something....when she made sure she was never seen at social occasions and non-family outings. Otherwise, her father's sacrifice or no, the engagement would have ended before you could do a spittake at her crazy.
My take on the evil twin Jun Dai is that I don't think she's stupid, I just think she's spoiled so she believes…
An interesting pov, and I agree with some of what you're saying.
However, to me she reads like a sociopath, and a socially, familially sanctioned one. I think the critical stupidity and short-sightedness that I'm referring to is the fact that she is driven by need and want and now. So while she cunningly manipulative (well done her on that front), and great at playing victim + leveraging guilt to get her way when sheer audacity doesn't work -- it all falls apart very quickly. It's like she starts driven by ego and emotion, which comes together in some form of a plan, but then it all falls apart soon after because what she wants isn't happening soon enough or exactly the way she wants it. So, in my books -- not a terribly clever person. However, I will give her full marks for her sense of self preservation and her sheer brazenness. But perhaps that also comes down to no inhibitions.
So this is a lush production. They really didn't skimp any coin on the clothing, accessories and the furnishings etc. When they say wealth and power...they legit show it. Some beautiful costuming. I wish the narrative was better though....less gaping logic holes, and TXW's 'evil' twin is written so poorly --- lacking entirely in nuance --- that it makes me cringe. The one-note shrieking tween on a power trip imitation is really not helping. It would have made for more compelling story if the twins were better matched in strength. Right now, one of them is critically stupid, short-sighted and deafening while the other one has brains, strategy but not a whole lot of charisma. The two are similar only in that they are determined on their respective paths. So far, the older ladies e.g. paternal and in-law aunts and grannies are doing a way better job than the leads. Plus I wish, FL's chief made sported more than 2 expressions: aghast and ultra aghast! It definitely fills the insane makjang slot in my drama watching so let's see.....
A really enjoyable start! Definite tingles between the leads and it's an interesting premise. I hope they keep the tone fun and exploratory about attitudes rather than bogged down. I'd like for both of them to grow and change together for the better! Can't wait. Also, anyone know the title & singer of the song at the end of ep 3? I can't find it on Spotify or the interwebz and it's not the one listed on the official OST. I could only find one track and one instrumental there.
is the cdrama will be very different from the novel? This is my most anticipated cdrama, as she looks very ruthless…
From what the BTS and trailers indicate: I would not go into expecting anything close to the novel beyond the bit about the ML needing a bride for health or a widow in the event he dies,,,the rest appears to be completely different.
The book was pretty good but this is so far removed from the original that I don't even think it can be called an adaptation. More like, "once upon a time met..." or something. Still, am here for TXW. It looks like it's going to be overwrought, shrieking, slap fest....and some days that' s just what you need. Let's hope it's note one-note and one-tone. Fire CP will help with that, as will some tonal and character complexity. Still: can't have it all. Please TXW make it watchable.
Ep 38: The more I think about the grave scene, the more I appreciate that it resolves almost nothing. Ep 37 leaves…
Yes! That's how I felt too. For such a meaningful and revelatory moment (for Lanxiang) the grave scene resolves little. Her understanding of him is leavened by this knowledge but at no point does it mean forgive and forget. Instead, it's more of continue to live but perhaps a little differently. I think TSY has done a terrific job in this drama -- full credit to the director and scriptwriters for the nuanced writing and direction -- and she has done well. So much of Lanxiang's struggle are internal, concealed in a world that gives her virtually no room to express herself. Perhaps that's one reason why secretly becoming an opera writer was so important to her. It's an avenue for her to be Shen Jialan, to be Lanxiang, to be and intelligent woman who has survived and lived (as fully as she could) against significant odds.
Aah, I didn't catch on the the 3 bows interpretation. But I see what you mean. And that makes a lot of sense.
I'm curious about how the drama will handle Lanxiang's identity reveal. It has consistently chosen to deal with enormous reveals in the quietest ways possible. The reverberations creep up several eps later and you think....oh damn. I reflect back on the scene at the start, where Shen Jialan reveals to Lanxiang's mum (and now her adopted mum) that Jinqi was her betrothed. That scene was heart wrenchingly portrayed. And I loved that the conclusion was there was no conclusion, simply a moment to grieve and then to live. It's one of those threads I think about...what did her mum think when the emperor's decree came? She knew of Shen Jialin's history with Jinqi (I don't think the dad does) and yet, here she is forced to bow to power again and again. It must have been a bitter moment.
