At the end of ep. 1 and beginning of ep. 2, when Jin Nang is playing the pipa during her deflowering auction, Menglin is attracted to her choice of song as well as her bold playing style. He says, "Interesting. Not "Autumn Moon Over the Han Palace" nor "Flute and Drum at Sunset", but "Chu Han" instead." "Chu Han" is an earlier version of "Ambush at Ten Sides." "Ambush from Ten Sides" is a Chinese classical pipa music and its subject is the decisive battle in 202 B.C. at Gaixia (southeast of today's Linbi County, Anhui Province) between the two armies of Chu and Han. This piece gives an overall view of the battle, while "The King Doffs His Armor" focused on Xiang Yu and his defeat. Ambush from Ten Sides provides a vivid depiction, in the form of musical narrative, of the fierce and stirring scenes of the battle and the desolate and solemn scenes of the defeated Xiang Yu, and ends with the triumph of the victor. A wide variety of performance techniques of pipa are brought into full play in this piece that produce a majestic and passionate narrative which is sharp in artistic image, exalting in melody, and ultimately thrilling. (from wiki) "Ambush From Ten Sides" is considered a difficult piece and is usually played by virtuosos. "Chu Han" might be the same. So an unspoken point is that Jin Nang must be very skilled at playing the pipa. Menglin is revealed to be a very discerning person who notices and understands the choice. Unschooled in real life, but no idiot. He finished with. "She really played with a heroic spirit! What kind of hero deserves such beauty.?" If Jin Nang is a virtuoso at playing the pipa, then it is ironic that in ep. 27/18 when Liu Wan forced Jin Nang to play in the inner courtyard, that none of the ladies assembled were able to discern her talent. Reinforcing Menglin's comment that they won't understand.
I have this drama on standby on my computer screen almost every day. I watch the prison scene where she gets Menglin to marry her most often. And then the final scenes where Menglin is waiting for her. Then the scene in ep. 32 in the prison where Luo Shu says that she will accompany him to return to Taiyuan and she says that once she sets her heart on him, she will be with him until the end of her life. And he says, "I'm not worth you doing this." She replies, "Worth or not. That's for me to decide."
She misunderstood Han Muzhi in Episodee 18. He was going to remove her from the stage when Qi Mei Ling walked…
Han Muzhi wouldn't have gone up to the stage because Liu Wan had earlier shown him his request for Luo Shu's manumission. She used it to trap him into a lose lose situation. Muzhi could have her freed but would have to keep the engagement with Liu Wan or break the engagement but have the manumission request declined, because of her Father's influence. Ep. 17 at 35:59. She asks He Xiang, her maid, to bring that "thing." We do not see what it was but it was the request. And to tell the truth, as much as he loves her, and as much as viewers like him over Menglin, he didn't have the stones to choose love over career. Hence at the end he was promoted, but Liu Wan remained in seclusion. Too bad not many people are talking here nowadays. Thank you and take care.
She was sent there as part of Wuniang's punishment but each time she tried to redeem herself, he refused to let…
Understand. But in all of the scenes with them as kids, Luo Shu was never shown as doing something to raise his ire. No need for him to punish her nor seek to break her spirit. Unless very early on he could see the diamond in the rough that became Chief Luo of the Linfen Yamen. I suspect that Wuniang was sent to Mingke House because Luo Shu would be forced to accompany her. Mingke House did train her to be a courtesan, with a wide range of refined abilities, including artistic talents, social graces and intellectual engagements. But the drama does not hint at that but emphasizes breaking her spirit. There might be reasons that Qin Yi had in the novel Jin Nang that the drama left out. One thing is that once they are together, if she discovers that he had a hand in killing her parents, he might have preemptively sought to nip her spirit in the bud.
I wonder if the sister-in-law will end up with her sister's husband. Little off hand comments made me wonder. Ep. 1 42:45 Mi Joo says, "It's not my business what you get up to. but there are boundaries to respect. Things between us aren't settled yet." And in ep. 3, the Shaman answers Gyeon U's question, "How is our compatibility?, with, "A match made i heaven." but it wasn't with him. She tells Mu Jin, " Be good to her. If you lose her, you'll never find another woman in your life." Of course the shaman could be referring to Mu Jin's wife. But Hui Ju was there for him when he needed it. Gyen U is more positive about his relationship than Hui Ju is.
I was raging during the “tests”. The nerve of that manager.
I feel you. Those least able to afford losing their jobs and least able to resist the injustice. This episode let the Mother and her co-workers to shine. This drama just gets better.
The first part is good for that. The kids taking the test have great chemistry. Lin Zhao Xi and her Father have a great story in the other world. Her best friend, the screen star has a surprising HE, but only in the other world. Pei Zhi and her relationship, relationships is, are rather complicated. Once she comes back to her world and is back to being an adult, the relationships are more dark, but I only remember a few points about the drama from that part. Sorry.
Ok I'd bite. What the heck is a medicinal slave? It sounds so kinky I dare not start.
The Moon Clan had certain powers. The clan was wiped out including children, and only the young women were kept alive and kept as Medicinal Slaves by the Office of Divination. The blood of the Moon Clan women could be used for different purposes. It can be used to counter poison. An elixir, "Pool of Withered Bones," that could prolong life, was made by was made by fatally immersing medicinal slaves in a pool where their blood was leached from their bodies. The Office of Divination controlled access to the medicinal slaves for profit and to exert control over those who wished to drink the slave's blood for temporary immunity from poison and to prolong their lives. The Queen of the Moon Clan's blood was special. Her blood could revive the recently dead or prevent to decay of the dead. The Emperor seeks her blood to gain immortality.
Would you have liked to see a bit more romance in this drama? There were only two kisses and the first one was followed by a slap. Ep. 26 at 27:51 and the other was on the boat and was a peck on the cheek. Muzhi galloped furiously to catch up only to witness that. Ep.29 at 29:38. I think that by ep. 29 he should have started to fall for Liu Wan.
Too bad not many people are talking here nowadays. Thank you and take care.
