The JJL page is really bugging me - every second comment is complaining about Jin Han, and it's not like it's the first romantic lead he had (Twisted fate of love - I kind of dropped it because it was dragging, might go back to it, though).

I think it might be the ol'stereotypical gender roles acting up again - basically, Jiuling is very calm, most of the time, she's a doctor and she doesn't do all the excitable hijinks most Princesses in these dramas do. Literally, the dumbest thing she did was try to kill the emperor in the throne room, and she was being played by another actress, then (I barely associate that with her character anymore).

OTOH, ZZ isn't the usual stoic and cold male lead - he's excitable and has a temper, and he does rash things without thinking of the consequences. He doesn't mind playing the fool, and I think some people like their male leads to be stone-faced and hiding their emotions until the very end.

Re. defending idols: Oh, man - I once made the mistake of giving a bad review to a film starring an idol (not even gonna mention his name: his initials are XZ), and you should see the really nasty response I got to it. I didn't criticise his acting, I really like him too, and he plays my second favourite character in c-drama (for the favourite, see userpic), just the film was shit.

IKR! I haven't read the novel but you can tell from his first appearance what ZZ is supposed to be like - but still, lots of people are moaning about how they prefer people like her cousin (the one who was sick) or the Marquis.

I actually have a question, if you read the novel - does that have the whole "they were childhood sweethearts" in it too? Because that's literally the only part I find annoying. I get that they had to get around transmigration with the use of what I like to call "face/off ", but I'm wondering about the 'we were kids together' thing.

That's a pretty good point, and you're making me want to watch it now! I know Zhao Xun gets a lot of flak for her voice, which is totally why I love her.

Lol, I know that every time someone comments on how terrible Angelababy's acting is (because it is bad), there's about 5 people gushing about how beautiful and gentle and kind she is, and how mean we are. I mean, she might be all of those things (look, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that's not how I judge good actresses), but she's bad at acting, which is HER JOB.
Also, I don't like defending actors, it makes me feel like a teenager which I'm not, but I'm tired of people being nasty about Jin Han (his looks, his acting style, his age) in the Jun Jiuling page, just because he doesn't fit the teen idol stereotype of male leads. He's a pretty good actor, and he thicc. (sorry, I can be shallow too)

The latest comments have pretty much said everything I want to say, so I'll just go for the shallow route - Lou Yun Qi's subordinate needs to un-‘fword’ his hairstyle - I mean, I don't like the 'severely scraped back from the face' hair, but his bangs look like he sleeps in a dumpster. (also, character wise he's as much of a creep as his master, so good job) (yeah I edited 🙃🙄)

Yeah, me too! HE's really showing his true colours - keeping some chick on the side to be his fake Jiuling, and being a total asshole to the real Jiuling, just because he thinks she's a powerless woman. Bleurgh

That's a bit sad - perhaps it's an accent problem, but I really wish they'd let actors dub their own roles, at least. Still enjoying the series - just finished episode 14 - there's some clever storytelling happening which I'm enjoying.

I'm enjoying it and I'm impressed with PXR so far - I especially love her voice, and I'm wondering if they're actually allowing the actors to dub their own voices in this.

I really like Jin Han, and I think he's perfect for this role.

I'm about 30 episodes in and have hijacked the comment section of the show to provide a running commentary which no-one's reading - Featuring:
- loathing for Man Chong
- dislike for Guo Jia which became a grudging acceptance after he realised that Cao Cao is a nutter
- disgust at Man Chong and every word that slithers its way out of his mouth
- Cao Pi is a weird little guy and I have no idea what's up with him
- unconditional love for Eunuch Leng
- Yang Xiu is kind of an 'eh' character
- Man Chong DIE

Also, it has the best opening theme I have ever heard on a c-drama - the best.

God I hate Cao Cao, and now I don't mind Guo Jia that much. But Cao Cao - he not only took over Guo Jia's irritating laugh, but he made it an evil laugh.

If I didn't know how things went IRL I'd be very worried right now. Cao Pi, you are a weird little troll, and I'd like to know what crawled up your ass and died.

Also, someone needs to fix Tian Jian Ci's profile pic - it looks like it was taken in his teen pop star days and never updated - the guy is 30, ffs.
Before I forget, why won't Man Chong die? WHY?

Just recognised the Emperor as the same actor who played Ming Lan's dad in the Story of Minglan - he's graduated from an ineffectual jerk to a proper evil character! Have to give him the slow clap here - he does it really well.

I love Old Madam Fang - so refreshing to have an older female character who's not hateful or easily fooled. I'm loving her - I just got to the bit where she's happily in on a plan to fool the bad guy, and I'm loving it.

Is there a reason why you had to post this twice? Find something else to watch if you don't like it. Plenty of people are fine with Jin Han here.

Pretty sure it does, or they're saving the budget for later, because there's some big scenes in the trailer which I'm sure cost a lot of money.
Also, that first episode scene in the Emperor's throne room - that was a hella budget throne room, compared to others I've seen.

Am really enjoying this so far, though MAN CHONG STILL BREATHES. WHY?
And I don't get the Guo Jia attraction, I don't like him at all.
I haven't seen m'boy, Eunuch Leng for a while.
This is great and has some great acting, but sometimes the lack of budget really shows. Like there's some horrendous rear projection outside a carriage at one point. Also, in the last episode I watched, it became uncomfortably obvious that Liu Ping's dialogue was dubbed. I know everyone's dialogue is dubbed, but somehow his was the most obvious.
Still enjoying it.

I liked The Sword and the Brocade mostly for the complicated family relationships, then when it started going into crazy plots I lost interest, so I watched it in bits.
I didn't mind the huge age gap between the General and Shiyi so much, because it was realistic for the time, and eventually they did seem to build up a relationship. But it's true that Wallace Chung isn't very expressive at all - he isn't half as good as Hu Ge or Huang Xiao Ming (Xiao Ping Zhang).
I hope we're not going to be told that he's 'older Pingjing', 'cos I'll be disappointed. Though with the tradition of a completely different set of characters each time, I doubt it. Also, I don't want it to be a prequel - we know where the story is headed.

I was like you at first but maybe hold on for a while until PingJing really comes into his own? Or maybe if you didn't like Ping Jing then I guess it's not for you, because this is his story. I mean, sure, he's a little annoying at first, but he does grow up over the course of the series.

I've put this on my 'to watch' list because of Jin Han, but after what happened with Twisted Fate of Love (I dropped it because the plot became so complicated and and draggy), I'm thinking I might wait for the whole thing to be finished before I start, so at least I know it's going somewhere.

I love him! I only started watching Twisted Fate of Love because of Jin Han - I dropped the drama because of all the twisty turny plot things and side characters, and I only really cared about him, so I might watch a couple of episodes once I find out which ones interest me - like in the final flashback montage when he reads FL's letter, I was like "Those are the scenes I was literally waiting for! Where are they?"
I really started liking him after watching Princess Weiyoung - even the fact that he was a villain didn't distract me from his hotness.

Friendship ended with Tang Yin: now Eunuch Leng is my best friend. Stay safe, kid. Hopefully Man Chong (prick) dies soon (am in Episode 11)
