It seemed obvious to me that the original woman they asked didn't recognize the portrait so the woman standing next to her confirmed it and told the original lady she must be losing her eyesight or whatever. I think his mother is actually the clue. I have a hard time believing the Gong family would ever pass down the SW position to someone who is not a Gong. So maybe the dead SW is truly Ziyu's father, but his mother is from one of the back hill lineages so he inherited some special powers that he hasn't activated yet.
