While she brings up some technical points, almost everything in this review is in comparison to season 1. If that's…
? It's not a reboot or a spin-off. Of course, we expect it to be consistent with the first season. Thus, the comparison is inevitable.

I wonder how many people know that it was the original writers' team who literally created UTS. First, they finished UTS script and then brought it to several productions but couldn't find the production, bc they wanted to keep UTS in its original form. Linmon eventually accepted it as it was. It's not that they received the commission for the UTS project from Linmon. That means, it's not a simple case, like, Linmon switched the writers' team.

For the first season, they originally wrote 16 cases but only 10 were filmed. Thus, they wanted to prepare the 15 cases for the second season according to the filming process of UTS1.
They've already started to prepare for the 2nd season shortly after the filming of UTS1 even tho they were not sure if they got the contract. I guess, most of us know how things went south and they eventually left the project.
Ofc, a drama doesn't solely belong to the script team. Every department of the production is involved in and contributes to the film/drama making. If you compare the original script of certain scenes with the same scenes from the drama, you may notice many differences.

Still, imho, they ARE the core of the UTS universe. I don't mean to belittle the actors' contribution but as much as I like Tan Jianci and Jin Shijia and their portrayal of respective roles, they were not the decision-makers. They were not the director, producers, or writers. Many UTS 1 fans, myself included, speak out we are dissatisfied with UTS 2 not bc we wanna spread hate for the UTS series. On the contrary. Many ppl care about the UTS series out of love for UTS 1, that's why we voice our concerns. My purpose is not to attack certain comments or ridicule their opinions. I just wanted to explain the whole context. That's all. Let's respect different comments. And pls don't attack the original writers' team, which seemingly already happened on Weibo.

yes, it's definitely not a couple of weeks. Then again, the original team already began to prepare for the 2nd season shortly after the filming, even though they didn't get any contract then. (2021) They wanted at least another 1 to 1.5 years after the contract was signed (2022) to write & edit 15 cases in total and refine the script, while Linmon wanted to start filming at the beginning of 2023. As we all know, they wrote UTS and then, brought it to Linmon, so they knew UTS well. Still, they needed that much time. They had already written the early drafts of seven cases before they got the contract.
That said, the new writers' team really didn't have that much time.

Title Under the Skin Season 2 Spoiler
Maybe I know too much about actual criminal profiling that I just can't suspend the amount of disbelief needed…
yeah, I noticed that , too.
And also... I felt uncomfortable that all female characters, whether victims, suspects or accomplices in S2, convey their feelings only thru non stop sobbing or screaming. Most of them have a passive-aggressive attitude and it was difficult for me to have some empathy for them. You can say their portrayals are stereotypical and rather shallow but for me, it's more than that. It was a stark contrast to female characters in S1, whom I could feel relatable. In some cases, I had my admiration for their action. Ofc it's related to the cases but imho their ways of writing female characters are fundamentally very different.

oh, god. yes, yes and yes. you articulate your thoughts so well that I actually don't need to add anything.
I think it was too much for the writers, who jumped into the production last minute and wrote a script within the limited time from scratch. As a result, they gave up exploring the profession of portraitist. Instead of that, they made SY... I don't know, SY 2.0. I feel like, they had vague ideas to write a genius with excellent visual acumen, checked some Baidu pages and put all those pieces of information together in the script. Let SY be a genius is their ultimate goal, cuz it was too much for them to make SY a genius portraitist. Alas, their tactic made SY rather ridiculous. I guess, it's really difficult to write a character, who is described as a genius.

It made me really angry but at the end of the day, it was Linmon's decision. They needed to make season 2 before UTS1's popularity was gone. They grabbed the IP from the original writers and kicked them off, making UTS2 within two years. I still had a simmering hope for UTS2. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed and felt kinda offended. Now, I only feel sorry for the original writers and actors.

Yes to everything you said! I couldn't believe how ridiculously godlike they made Shen Yi. I was getting so irritated…
ikr? sigh...
so happy to know, I'm not the only one, who was SO ANNOYED by SY yet finished the season only bc of TJC and JSJ lol
On Under the Skin Season 2 Jan 1, 2025
finished S2. It's a quite disappointment. I blame the writers. Those flashy and kinda stupid cases with over the top acting by guest stars aside (Tang Zeng was really good tho), they made Shen Yi's character really ridiculous. For me, the writers didn't even bother to understand what the forensic artist is. Instead of developing that profession, they just add different pursuits to SY. Like, SY in S2 was a psychoanalyst, psychotherapist, and forensic doctor... and now he can also read gene patterns after the involvement for eight months, in his spare time? When SY told that Cao guy, that he saw the gene sequencing and it was nothing wrong, I was like, it's a joke, right?
Yet, SY hasn't learned or totally ignored the basic procedure of the police investigation as a police officer in the past three years. grrrr.

As for Du Cheng... jsj said in a recent interview, DC in the 2nd season is ordinary/mediocre. The writers of the S1 said BOTH DC and SY could be genius criminals if they were not police officers. YES, BOTH of them. They made DC kinda ignorant, overprotective police officer, who couldn't really understand SY till the last minute. I didn't see any "tacit understanding" btw them, which they built in the last couple of episodes in S1. I'm so sad.
No, don't need to remind me of that convo on the rooftop. I just don't accept the whole narrative.

Both tjc and jsj did everything they could. There were actingwise some very good scenes and I enjoyed a lot.

is it good compared to season one?
it totally depends on what you expect. I am very unsatisfied with it so far. But many like this season and they even think it better. Tho I'm often frustrated, I will definitely finish the drama.
Currently, I'm more intrigued with the drama outside the drama, like how tjc &/or linmon could pursuade jsj doing variety show and live streaming LOL

I think it's his first time doing livestream. As for the variety show, his last appearance was in 2018.
Actually, many speculate His billing as a special lead (e.g. the heart) is somehow related to his contract avoiding promotions lol

Can anyone give me some drama recommendations for Jian Ci??
I like his portrayal of that talented opera singer in Winter Begonia very much. And he could sing a certain scene even after two years of the filming. When I saw that video, I was DEEPLY DEEPLY impressed by him.

I agree with you all.
As for jsj, he did some joint interviews, and he is currently filming something, which we learned from the live streaming with other casts on the 10th of December. So, I guess, it's really due to his schedule. But, it's also true, that he refused to do any variety stuff and his last appearance on the variety show was like in 2018... and now, he will be on Hello, Saturday. So, that's a big deal. I think he cares about the drama that much lol
Btw. Jin Shijia also refuses to have an official fanclub and doesn't want to accept any collective fan activities. Thank god. Otherwise, there would be a huge fan war... and how can I blame them? I mean, DC in the 1st season was a pretty talented police officer, who is still young but already the captain with three stars and two lines? (That means, his position is three ranks higher than SY. Three fucking ranks. SY in S2 doesn't even care about that and after the brief chat, he went straight ahead to Zhang Zhu, to get the sign. Cool.)

Apart from the grudge, DC also struggled in the first season to utilize SY in the squad because the portrait artist was never really an essential member of his team. Eventually, he and his team members accepted SY as not only a genius portraitist but also a fellow officer. I really don't feel DC is the team leader anymore.

SY呢? Does he still remember that he is a police officer in S2? You are not trained as a psychotherapist (oh gawd. poor Li Han. you should go to the professional therapist) nor a forensic doctor (He Rongyue didn't even roll her eyes when he analyzed the scratch on the wrist of victim to HER.)
