Believe the hype for this drama. Starts off a bit slow but I'd say at about the 5th or 6th episode it starts to…
Exactly. I ignored this one so many times but was curious as to why everyone else seemed to like it. I gave it a try and dont regret it. The intro ost is amazing. Has to become part of my playlist which is mainly filled with kpop.
Several times I came across this drama and never gave it a chance. Why? Melodrama and plot centered around Revenge - 2 things that put me off. I have watched so many dramas that I got tired of melodrama and plots centered around revenge because of family situations. BUT, like I said, I kept seeing this drama everywhere, the rating is not bad and it has the Hot tag on kissasian. I was in the mood for a taiwanese drama so I thought, meh, why not give it a try? I can watch the first episode and if I can’t get into it, I can just drop it.
Well, I did NOT drop it. Starting with that amazing intro which I am going to be listening for a while and the pace of the first episode - not too slow, not too fast. I watched the second episode, then the third and I kept watching. Later on, ofc, there were episodes I liked less because with a revenge plot, I knew I was setting myself for angst at some point. But the angst wasnt excessive in my opinion and the last episode wrapped up things nicely.
So yeah, I HATE Melodrama and I HATE Revenge, but I CANNOT bring myself to HATE this one.
Hate to break it to you if you haven’t finished it yet but it will get even messier. So many puzzle pieces thrown…
You’re welcome. There are so many good dramas out there and so little time to watch them all. I wish I was like you and did not keep watching until the end.
Well, I am 23, will be 24 in 3 months and I wish I went back to being a teenager. Being an adult sucks. All the fun you had in your teenage years will disappear and so will most of your high school friends. Everyone moves on with their own lives. You will have new and big responsabilities, like finding a job you like, pays well and is close to your house and then having to work almost everyday, getting a license and a car and then having to pay insurance, fuel and so many other expenses come along. If you decide to live by yourself it will be even harder. I am not trying to be negative. It is not all bad. There are some advantages to being an adult.
What I am trying to say is to live each day without worrying about tomorrow. Enjoy being young and responsabilities free. 10-15 years from now you will understand what I am talking about.
I liked the first episode, seeing the kids growing up into adults and their interactions. It looked promising. Then from episode 2 and foward it was painful to watch. And when it finally looked like it was going well, bam the ending left me feeling cheated. I read the comments and still decided to watch, now I regret it. Such a waste of time.
I know what you mean. I feel the same. Maybe when I was 16 I would think this is cute, but now that I am only 3 months away from being 24 and have watched hundreds of dramas, it just doesn’t seem like something worth my time.
Did you watch this with eng subs? Who did she end up with?
Yes, I watched it with eng subs. If I remember right, since it has been 5 months, she ends up with the Emperor. Give it a try and you will know for sure.
Exactly. I have a love-hate relationship with this drama and its even leaning more to the hate part. I am someone…
It’s not that I didn’t know what was going on at all, but in terms of writing it felt very messy, especially the ending. But from what I read no wonder the ending was like that, the writer and director wanted different endings, the writer wanted a sad ending as it was supposed to be but the director wanted a happy ending, so they ended up doing a mix of both which resulted in a sloppy ending. But yeah, every person has different opinions and likes different things. That’s why we have the comment section so we can share our views and help people who didn’t watch it yet to decide if they want to give it a try or not.
I've watched the first 4 episodes and it feels so messy.
Hate to break it to you if you haven’t finished it yet but it will get even messier. So many puzzle pieces thrown at us that at some point we forget what the puzzle was even supposed to look like. Some good ideas but the execution was a disaster.
I didn't really like this drama because it opened up too many subplots and left them all hanging without explanation…
Completely agree with you. Too many subplots made it very confusing and even boring at times. By the end of the last episode my first thought was: wow, I just spent all these hours so I could find out where the damn missing tape was. All those deaths and all those "tape eodiseo?" made me forget that this story was suposed to be about Black (444). And the ending was...well, I didn’t like it. Definitely does not deserve such a high rating if compared with other dramas.
Exactly. I have a love-hate relationship with this drama and its even leaning more to the hate part. I am someone…
Ikr. I wish Moo Gang stayed around. The way he died and how everyone thought he was still alive felt very unfair for him. That was one of the things that I was not happy about. I almost dropped it a few times too and the whole missing tape thing was getting tiring for me. With such a high rating I expected something better. But experience has showed me not to trust ratings. I have hated high rated dramas before and was pleasantly surprised by some low rated ones.
I get what you're saying but the drama is FANTASY so everything isn't going to be logical
I also get what you mean and as I said in the other comment I understand it being fantasy not everything is logical, but I did expect logic in scenes where it was required like when Ha Ram and Man Soo were stabbed and were bleeding for such a long time. If it was Black I could let it pass since technically he was not human and ok, Ha Ram was half and half, but Man Soo was human and he was stabbed 3-4 times with a large knife.
The writer could have made it more believable either by killing him (although that was the least wanted option) or by making him only get stabbed 1 or 2 times like Ha Ram and maybe use a smaller knife too. The way he got stabbed, not only was I expecting him to die, but for it to take less than 30 minutes.
I think that her dad always wore black dress so she couldn't have seen it.... Leo being 444's partner, they both…
One of the genres being Fantasy does not mean that the drama does not require any logic or an organized plot, if so even a child could be the writer and create a story that makes no sense. I have watched other fantasy dramas before, of course they were not realistic since it was fantasy, BUT the plot was neat, everything had a purpose. I feel that here the problem was the writer had some good ideas but no idea how to organize them and create a consistent plot, which resulted in a lot of unnecessary cases and characters that just dragged the whole missing tape case, which in the end made a lot of people feel like this drama was not about Black, Ha Ram or grim reapers but about a missing tape that took 20 years and lot of unnecessary deaths to finally be found in the last episode.
Of course everyone has his/her own opinion. A lot of people enjoyed it and were not bothered by these things. It was not my case since I am a little picky and have watched way too many good dramas so what was a masterpiece 2 years ago I now might think it is just an ok drama.
Exactly. I have a love-hate relationship with this drama and its even leaning more to the hate part. I am someone…
That does have some logic and I can accept that but doesn’t change the fact that there were still a lot of plot holes. Like I said, I liked the enjoyment I got out of it but at some point I was only watching because I wanted to know what would happen to Black. Everything else didn’t matter as much to me.
another drama starts with a WOW, ends with an ErrrmmMMmm????????......i think it will be better if the writer…
Exactly. I have a love-hate relationship with this drama and its even leaning more to the hate part. I am someone who loves thrillers, mistery and suspense BUT things need to have logic, you cant just throw ridiculous plots at me and expect me to buy it. There were too many things that bothered me, one of them being what you said about Ha Ram not being able to see the shadows, like, at least in the halloween party Black was wearing a WHITE shirt, so she should have been able to see it and there were other times. When she and Man Soo got stabbed, she was stabbed twice with a large knife and Man Soo was stabbed 3-4 times if I remember right, it took like what, 2 days for them to be found? You want me to believe that 2 human beings were bleeding to death for 2 days, without eating or drinking anything and were still alive?? Some stitches and a few days at the Hospital and BAM they are all good. There were more things but I would be here all day writting about it.
Anyway, I agree with you. I feel like the writer(s) did not bother to organize the good ideas they had and ended up creating something messy and with no logic.
Let’s be honest here. The high rating is purely for the enjoyment given by the drama to the people who watched it. I enjoyed parts of it too BUT that doesn’t mean I can ignore MAJOR plot holes, like how each person and case were connected in a way that would never happen in real life, how getting stabbed 2 times or more and bleeding for a long time yet being found still alive is considered completely normal and humanly possible, and let’s not even talk about the endind. Also the amount of time spent looking for the lost tape was ridiculous. Like someone said, the drama should not be called Black but “Saga of the Lost Tape”. Or like another person said, and this is completely true, the most used sentence during the entire drama was "tape eodiseo?". No joke! I sticked with it only for Black but in the end I felt like I spent so many hours watching the story of a lost tape, which makes me feel incredible dumb and think the writers were treating us viewers as a joke.
Sure, I enjoyed it but I had to take out my brain and forget about a thing called logic while watching most of it.
If you like me enjoy thriller, suspense and mistery but need things to be realistic and to have some logic, you will probably end up having a love-hate relationship with this drama.
Anyway, and this is not a popular opinion, but this is far from being the best drama of the year like some people are saying, although not the worst (yeah, Im talking about you "The Bride of Habaek"), but definitely not the best either.
Dropped it after episode 4. I don’t know, I just couldn’t get into it and felt that watching it until the end just for the sake of finishing it would be a waste of time. I could use that time to watch something better. But then again, although I got into dramas thanks to animes and mangas, I am not really a fan of japanese dramas. Of course there are exceptions, but most things that would be acceptable for me in mangas and animes look ridiculous when acted by real people. And because of that most japanese dramas look extremely weird and the actors, as good as they are, look like they are overacting. Not trying to say japanese dramas are bad. Every person likes different things and I do like some of them but in general they stay far behind in my priority list: 1st kdramas, 2nd chinese/taiwan and then japanese/lakorns.
