Title Beyond Evil
I think people who find this slow are people who would find Breaking Bad slow. This drama is so much more than…
Similar to Breaking Bad, I love how you can pick new details on every rewatch of Beyond Evil. Characters are very complex and layered. It's a shame some people don't have an understanding of morally grey characters and character development. Oh well, it is what it is.

Title The Rise of Phoenixes Spoiler
By the end of the drama I'm just angry at everyone except Ning Yi (and Ning Cheng).

I already heard about the unfortunate ending from every comment I've come across about this drama, but I was so absorbed by Ning Yi's character that I just couldn't let go. I really enjoyed his chemistry with Feng Zhiwei.

I would have found the ending acceptable if the events leading up to it weren't as shoehorned and if they actually had been well established. The thing is, the drama showed us Feng Zhiwei to be very smart and had a sharp eye when people were being manipulative. But in the final arc, her character had been downgraded to someone easily deceived and manipulated. She was so much better than that. She still had the same integrity that I'd always admired from her, but her brain decided to turn into a mush towards the end. Her prince brother sprung out of nowhere, and his story was just very forced. The way they made Feng Zhiwei hate Ning Yi was almost laughable.

I hated Helian Zheng so much because of how much he never understood that no means no. He's an extremely selfish character who was rather obsessed than in love with Feng Zhiwei. He kept saying he'd let her go, only to turn back on his word each and every single time. Feng Zhiwei had always made it clear that it was Ning Yi she loved and Helian Zheng for a minute was going to act like he was fine with it so long as Feng Zhiwei would stay with him, and then the next time he would guilt-trip the heck out of her. He was very manipulative until his death. He said he would be gentle with Feng Zhiwei and he would never force her and yet immediately right after the wedding he was so eager for them to consummate their marriage that very night.
I found him to be a hypocrite for denying Meiduo's advances because he never liked her so she should just give up and yet the irony is that he never did that for Feng Zhiwei. And the sad thing is the drama never called him out on it. To Feng Zhiwei he died a loving person instead of a manipulative dickbag.

Meanwhile it was Ning Yi who always gave Feng Zhiwei the space to make her decisions. If Feng Zhiwei said no, he understood and respected her decision.

I dislike how Shaoning's death was conveniently forgotten when she was supposed to be the apple of the Emperor's eyes. Ning Qi never really faced consequences for it, I mean in the sense that the Emperor actually had the realization that it was Ning Qi behind it.

It is also very fucked up how every character pushed the leads into a corner, killing everyone around Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei and then BLAME them for it and NOT RECEIVE consequences for it either. The drama made it really seem like the tragic lovestory of Ning Yi and Feng Zhiwei just could never be because people around them said so. It annoyed me how Xin Ziyan kept insisting for Ning Yi to be the Emperor even if just didn't want to anymore, and when it finally happened, he also gave him shit for it. Granted they also implied it's because Xin Ziyan murdered Lady Wang, but dude, you didn't have to make Ning Yi feel awful for it.

TL;DR, I just wanted to rant about this drama because it had sooo much potential gone to waste because of extremely messed up writing. Chen Kun and Ni Ni's chemistry was so good I'm gutted at how much they wasted such promising characters.

It's been clearly shown he's been faking right from Ep 6. He normally speaks with a stutter but during the cold…
That couldn't be farther than what they showed in the drama. It actually makes him even more sick because he's faking a disability to do his bad deeds. And the reason Minjung actually finds him creepy is because she knows he's faking everything.

You're given a proper explanation that explains the misunderstanding you had in the drama but you're choosing to ignore the facts presented to you because you're desperately trying to criticize something that's a complete non-issue. They made it very clear in the drama that he's just faking it. Why are you saying it doesn't matter when that's what creates the crucial line that clearly separates the killer from people with mental disabilities. They deliberately showed scenes to literally say the killer is NOT SOMEONE WITH A MENTAL DISABILITY. So why are you accusing this drama of something it did not do?

I saw it won an award for best drama so I tried it. I think it's alright. but sorry, the "twist" of the serial…
It's been clearly shown he's been faking right from Ep 6. He normally speaks with a stutter but during the cold open, when he is on his own his speech is completely normal and is even smug. What appeared to be his tremors when watching the tv on his own the previous ep was actually him laughing at the news.

The loss of stutter and the 180 deg change in his manner of speech is what made me realize the whole thing is just an act. On his own, he doesn't stutter at all and he doesn't have his usual childlike, innocent tone, instead he speaks like a completely normal adult. Even his childlike handwriting from the letter he sent to free Dongshik is completely different from the way he writes on the calendar. It's very precise and he has so much control, so unlike the earlier letter where it seemed like the writer doesn't have great control in his handwriting.

Another obvious indication of him faking it was when he ran very fast when he saw Minjung with Jungje.

The clues are right there, but you need to pay attention to see them.

I need help guys. Started this drama today due to all of the good reviews I see here. I am on ep 5 and I am still…
If you are disconnected to the story and the characters then maybe watching it right now isn't a good time. It's a drama that requires the viewers' full attention. Beyond Evil takes the time to focus on the characters and the pyschological warfare they are going through. There are layers behind their dialogues and actions. The story itself is straightforward but the characters are complicated people.

It's not just a drama that's simply about catching the killer, but the dillemmas the characters are having and extent they would go for just to hide their crimes/bring about justice.

It's also a drama that sheds light on the POV of the victims' families, as they don't often have the main voice in dramas/movies like this.

I was planning on watching something light and slice of life after finishing this (I watched mouse before this,…
If you want to see more of Jingoo's brilliant acting I would really love to recommend The Crowned Clown. He was absolutely phenomenal there. And Hwayi too♡

For Shin Ha Kyun, my favorite film of his is Joint Security Area. That one's another masterpiece that everyone must check out.

Is it worth watching or is it just over hyped?
Just like with any kind of art, there are people who loved it and there are people who didn't appreciate it. It's a slow-burn drama where you have to pay attention to the dialogues and characters to really see the beauty in it. Nothing brand-new in the plot, but the execution is sublime. Very well-researched with no plot holes and a very strong social message. There are already clues laid out right from the very beginning way before the reveals, so even rewatching it is so fun. Characters are layered and the development is beautiful. Acting is phenomenal. Music is chef's kiss.

Not everything is spelled out in this drama so there are those who don't pay attention and suddenly scream plot hole when it's just a detail they missed or it's something that is to be addressed in the later part of the show.

So yes, it is very much worth watching, but it's a show that requires the viewer's full attention. The juxtaposition between characters, the parallels, the metaphors, all so wonderfully made. This drama is truly a masterpiece. Definitely far from over-hyped as @Meseob said. If anything, this drama is actually underrated. I think people are getting the idea that Beyond Evil is over-hyped because it won major awards at the Baeksang so suddenly people are talking about this drama everywhere.

Shin ha Kyun ajjushi congratulations again (。ŏ﹏ŏ)Some people are salty about his win but we unbiased viewers…
It's really funny seeing them get salty over BE's wins. They're even calling BE fans arrogant because fans are just rightfully celebrating the show's well-deserved wins, while at the same time they're also saying Baeksang's cancelled and the awards are invalid because their faves didn't win. Who's the one being arrogant here?¯_(ツ)_/¯ Their lack of self-awareness is dumbfounding.

I hope our Manyang folks are eating well, sleeping well, and pooping well♥

What remained partially unexplained - or maybe I lost track of it - was WHY did Kang Jin Mook kill Yu Yeon in…
Lee Yuyeon also pointed her finger at Jinmook due to her shock when she saw Bang Juseon getting murdered. KJM even told her to stop doing that. The finger pointing is one of the things that triggers him.

But the statute of limitation for his sister's case would have been expired right?
Lee Yu Yeon's case was initially only filed for disappearance because there was never a body. That's why they kept stressing throughout the drama how important it is to find the body first. There's also the PSA at the end to make sure to report any kind of leads when it comes to disappearance cases because often times they are simply treated as runaway cases when it could've been murder already.

Same. Although rewatching it is also another amazing experience because you get to watch the show with the hindsight of having seen it to the end. The earlier episodes could now be seen in a completely new perspective. You get to realize the clues and foreshadowing planted right from the beginning. It's brilliant! Makes you appreciate the writing even more.

"I have once thought about social responsibility. I didn’t want my writing and my drama to hurt anyone living. Even if it is for those who have been waiting for their families who have disappeared for years or decades. Even if it is for the surviving families of the many victims who have actually suffered murder. I did not want to display the murder or give perpetrators a narrative of understanding. The most important goal of was to tell the story of the bereaved that no one listens to. With a voice of victims who cannot speak for themselves. While writing, it felt unrealistic so I trashed a script that had taken me a year. I decided that I would lend my ear again and begin writing once more." - Writer Kim Soo Jin of Beyond Evil

First thing first, the casting is way too great. Ha hyun who played the lead role is a hidden gem this is my first…
The writer wrote this drama with the family of the victims in mind. She didn't want to show the murders explicitly nor create a drama that would make the murderer worth understanding. It's a story that is more about a serial murder's impact on the ones left behind rather than the actual serial murder/killer itself.
