I would've liked this film so much more if they didn't make the outside soldiers too cartoonish as antagonists (the horrible acting by the foreign actors certainly didn't help). I know it's a comedy drama but every single one of their scenes just made me cringe really bad. A bunch of their actions just flat out didn't make sense and were just done to generate cheap anger from the audience.
I loved all the scenes with the Dongmakgol villagers and our 5 lead soldiers and the very final scene made me smile and sad at the same time.
The rewatch value of this show is so high because you're going to watch it through a totally different lense,…
Right? The attention to detail in this drama is outstanding. Even the actors themselves went into filming already knowing the major plot points of the whole drama (the culprits and backstories that don't appear until the latter half, etc), so on a rewatch you get certain details from their acting that you initially miss on your first watch . Mad props to the writer for making such a good script from beginning to end. No wonder it's got amazing reviews from critics too.
A grey character is a character that is not 100% bad nor 100% good. They are in between.Lee Dong Shik and Han…
I had high hopes for FOE because I really enjoyed the first half but the writer really dropped the ball on the latter part of the story. Thankfully the cast continued to be stellar especially Lee Junki, because the story really disappointed me.
I'm really glad that in BE's case, the writer had a set plan from beginning to end. There are no loose ends and everything was well-researched so the story's resolution felt realistic and not contrived.
Frankly it's a better far more consistent show than Flower of Evil. And there are plenty of gray characters.
I think her definition of a grey character is a character without development lmao. LDS and HJW made highly questionable choices throughout the drama, even the way they made LCJ confess in the end isn't what you'd call good. Just because they eventually set out to correct their mistakes doesn't stop them from being grey characters. It's called character development.
The hype behind this drama reminded me of the same hype Flower of Evil got last year. Both dramas are excellent…
A grey character is a character that is not 100% bad nor 100% good. They are in between.
Lee Dong Shik and Han Joo Won both did highly questionable things in the drama. Two innocent people died so they can eventually bring justice to the serial murder case. Han Joo Won led Lee Geum Hwa to her death when he used her as his bait. Lee Dong Shik tampered with the evidence of Kang Jin Mook's crime, so (unbeknownst to him) it led to Min Jung's death. They did illegal things throughout the drama to bring about a closure to this whole case. Han Joo Won planted fake evidence to show to Dong Shik there's more to the case after what happened to Kang Jin Mook. Even in the end you have Lee Dong Shik choking Lee Chang Jin to get him to confess.
Just because they learned and corrected said mistakes don't erase the fact that they did illegal things, some of which led to people's death. It's called character development. Or is your definition of a grey character someone having no development and arc in their story?
This drama is honestly way better than Flower of Evil imo. I enjoyed that drama but it just went downhill after Ep 10. A comatose patient of more than a decade suddenly walking after like weeks at most? Characters suddenly becoming dumb out of nowhere because plot needs to move, the villain suddenly getting a gun from a cop when he's caught so they can shoot the main guy, oh and of course, main lead gets amnesia for additional typical kdrama angst.
They keep on forgetting the premise of the drama and how it is a PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER...and keep spouting seemingly…
Beyond Evil isn't simply about the characters finding what the "truth" is but the actions they decide to take when they finally learn the truth they have worked so hard to find. Every scene meant something, there are no filler moments.
I really like how this drama took the time to introduce all the main players from the start and have them have a hand in our story.
I love that the conclusion feels so satisfying while keeping it realistic.
Some people seem to mistake this drama as simply finding out "who the real killer is"or getting a new suspect every episode even if it no longer made sense in the overall story. Beyond Evil is much more than that. It isn't just about the "big reveal" of the culprit but is actually about the impact the case has made on all the characters involved, especially the ones left behind by the victims. It's about the choices they decide to make when faced with the actual truth.
So many dramas would make all these shocking revelations episode after episode just for the sake of shock value but if you examine the whole thing, everything just falls apart. How in the end of the drama, everything is just filled with plot holes and weakly inserted deus ex machina.
This is no action thriller. This is a psychological thriller. Beyond Evil is a drama that shows instead of telling. It makes the viewers think. It's a drama that doesn't insult the viewers' intelligence by making the characters do things not part of their established personality, idiotic things, contrived moments like the culprit suddenly getting a gun from a flimsy cop near him to shoot the main character, face-palming kdrama tropes, etc.
I love how Beyond Evil really took the time exploring the characters and their motivations. They become more and more layered the deeper we go into the story. The ending feels cathartic and satisfying. No loose ends with everything addressed, including things I've already forgotten about.
To those who enjoyed Beyond Evil, I really highly recommend rewatching this drama. It's amazing to see how well the writer planned everything from the get go and spot all the carefully planted clues right from the start. The parallels are glorious (my fave is the ending of Ep 1 vs the ending of Ep 16). You get to understand every character's POV given the hindsight of having seen all episodes. So much applause to everyone involved in the making of this beautiful drama.

Here's an example of the Hotel Del Luna blu-ray https://imgur.com/tDEFhjo to give you an idea what the final product would look like if we ever succeed with the pre-order.
Joo Won is seriously getting on my nerves. I get why he's suspecting everyone and in any other drama they all…
Just keep watching :D HJW is really meant to be annoying in the first half (he's rude, entitled, privileged, etc). Also from his POV, people are deliberately hiding things, deleting CCTV footage, stealing case files, he is an outsider and Manyang ppl aren't exactly acting innocently either.
But his character will undergo substantial development. You will also eventually understand why he is the way he is. It's all worth it in the end.❤
Still hurt that Yeo Jin Goo was not nominated. He was just exceptional alongside Shin Ha Kyun! Would easily let…
Same. I'm all for Shin Hakyun winning the award or the Daesang, but I think Yeo Jingoo truly deserved a nomination at the very least. The acting range and details that he showed in his performance were truly impeccable, especially in the latter half of the series where the story finally explores his character.
It was a very difficult role to play at that. Han Joowon's personality is very serious and is deadpan most of the time, but the fact that he was able to convey so many complicated emotions whilst keeping it all low-key and subtle really showed how strong his performance was.
It was also a completely different kind of performance than what he did in The Crowned Clown (where he earned a nomination before), which makes his acting in Beyond Evil even more amazing.
I don't like the excuse that only one of the two leads can be nominated in a single category, especially when Baeksang has previously nominated two actors from the same drama in one category 2 years ago. Acting alone should be the sole basis and not the idea of "spreading the nomination across all dramas." I'm not saying it's the exact reason that Jingoo didn't get a nomination, but I've seen people try to justify the snub with that excuse.
7 nominations for Beyond Evil at the Baeksang Awards!
Best Drama Best Director - Shim Nayeon Best Writer - Kim Soojin Best Actor - Shin Hakyun Best Supporting Actor - Choi Daehoon Best New Actress - Choi Sungeun Best Cinematography - Jang Jongkyung
Although I already anticipated it, I'm still sad Jingoo isn't nominated :(( But nevertheless, congratulations and good luck to the whole team!!! Very well-deserved nominations. Please get that Daesang!!! Fighting!!!
I cried watching live, cried yet again watching with subs.
All the parallels throughout gave me goosebumps. All questions addressed! Characters didn't have to become idiots just to keep the plot moving. Characters are layered and showed development throughout the series but still stayed true to their personalities. Our main leads getting the most fitting and satisfying conclusions to their arcs... Oh my god!!!!!
More people need to watch this drama! They have nailed EVERYTHING.
