Historically, the ML and FL grew up together and were childhood sweethearts.

The FL lead was from the area where the ML’s mom lived and was known as a local beauty at a young age. She was brought to the palace by the then Zhang crown princess, the ML’s mom. The Fl was taught and raised by her as a child.
So the two lead’s relationship was really close but he either picked or his grandfather picked the 2nd FL as his official wife. The FL became his secondary concubine.
The 2nd Fl only had two daughters and never gave birth to a son. The Fl gave birth to a daughter than a son, who was the ML’s first son.

So the 2nd Fl was empress was for 3 years and he demoted her, his predominant reasoning was that she didn’t give him a son.

This act was a blemish his reign because she was faultless. His son, by the FL, with the urging of his wife gave the title of empress back to the demoted Empress Hu.

Interesting tibit, the Ml’s son stopped the practice of having childless concubines die after the emperor’s die. He loved his empress greatly and she was childless. She was also in poor health, being blind in one eye and crippled. She prayed for his safe return after his capture by the Mongols. He made a decree that his empress will be buried with him after she died, whenever that will be.

Well on their wedding night he couldn’t really go to her. His being wounded still is the reason why he still allowed to stay in Beijing instead having to go to Nanjing.
So if he goes to her than he is showing that he is healed and has to leave.

So that is why he purposely went to have martial arts duel with the 2ML embroidered guard. Therefore his wound split open again and that delays his departure.

He did come see her secretly at night and she was asleep.

I thought that all of the paintings were painted by the ML until I read the earlier comments.

The FL mentioned in episode in 27 that the coloring or something of the paintings were different.

That makes me wonder if the paintings of her on the kite and the ones she has in her box were drawn by the SML and the paintings of her that she found in the crown’s Prince's
study is painted by the ML.

I have to go back and look but the ones that
were painted for her
earlier such as the kite had her blouse a different shade of grey
than the paintings she found in episode 28.

Again I didn’t think that the 2ML drew those of her and gave them to her until someone posted them here.

The 2ML’s feelings for
the FL are interesting
too. They didn’t have much interactions in
person and she has always been nothing
but respectful
and polite to him.
But she did have ppl care for him and save his life before. Maybe he is fascinated by her kind heart and infuriated with her sense of righteousness.
So it’s perplexing to me why he would draw paintings of her and give them to her. Maybe he cares for her because he admires her from their past.
But he didn’t meet her and hasn’t spent that much time with her.

You are probably right! I can’t tell cause it was side profile. I thought that the fragrant concubine didn’t like her though.

I saw the preview but I couldn’t tell who that woman wasn’t. It looked like the new empress.

Also, since the FL agreed to the marriage she is going to try to change thing such as stopping the practice of burying the concubines of the departed emperors.

In history, Empress Sun’s son did abolish the practice. The ML’s historical counterpart did to but his officials said since he such a great emperor he needed his concubines to accompany him in death. But his son abolished it cause he loved his wife who had no living sons, who ended up being blind in one eye crippled. She prayed for his safe return daily cause he was captured by the Mongols. So he couldn’t bare to have her die when he passed but said that they will buried together.

He did go through alot , but the choices he makes now aren’t righteous. The FL has a righteous heart I don’t know if will even care for him because he doesn’t have the same values as her.
Sure she might ask that his life be spared but not look for him as a person she wants to spend her life with.
But he does deserve someone who can bring him back to the light and not Yue hua who is doing bad things.
The ML and the FL have similar values they fit better.

Currently, after her marriage the FL’s rank is 太子 嬪 Crown prince imperial concubine. Her rank is higher than the 才人, talented ladies.
When ML is emperor, Hu shan xiang, becomes empress.
Fl become 貴 妃 honorable concubine, which is the rank below the empress.
According to history, the FL eventually becomes empress after he demotes Empress Hu.

I have to rewatch but from my understanding is that if someone wants to exonerate or help someone who was accused of a crime than they have to endure the floggings. That way not everyone will try to appeal a sentence, for no reason.

Therefore, the FL was willing to take those floggings. If she allowed the crown Prince to save her than she will probably not have her case put in front of the empress.
Her goal was to save her mentor and her friend.

The ML did pick her up and let told the nurse official to put medicine on her. Also he didn’t want the FL to know that he brought her to be treated.

He didn’t give her a glance when she was kneeling partly I think that he was still upset and didn’t want her to know how much he cares.
He could’ve done something but he didn’t want to seem overt in helping her when she rejected him. Men and their pride. :p.

If you keep on watching he continues to watch out for her.

It’s better to for their relationship that Zijin fond her worth as a chef, before her direction in life was to be his perfect companion.
I think that they will be a great couple together and do great things for the country.

I think that the subtitles were incorrect , Wu jin yan’s character said that she doesn’t want him to have a bad name in the history books. He goes on to say what defines a good king.

I am unfamiliar with the kdrama that you mentioned but Royal Feast is about Ming emperor Zhu Zhanji. I am assuming that Wu jin yan’s character becomes Empress Sun.

I think wha you said about stepsiblings and more distant relations dating is fine. I draw the line at biological siblings dating or having romantic feelings for each other. Even if they are consenting adults incest is very taboo and wrong in my opinion.

I know that it could possible for biological siblings to be separated at birth and meet each other and develop feelings for each other not knowing that they are related. However, since they are related so closely their relationship is wrong.

I see no problems with step siblings dating etc because they aren’t related by blood.

I agree with you. The Ml fits the character of Yu Lou very well. This youtuber Marcus, commented that people’s comments seem to be code for the ML not being good looking enough.
He fits the role perfectly though. He has that naïveté in the first few episodes down pat, and later on you can see his growth. I also want to point out that in this drama the actors portraying the Sun brothers look like siblings. Plus the actress playing Sun Yu Lou’s mom and the ML look alike. They can totally pass for mother and son. Oftentimes in cdramas the actors and actresses who play the parents don’t look similar to their “children” at all.

I was just thinking how life in the Sun household will be like if the Older Sun brother and the second Sun brother married each other’s wife’s instead. They seem in terms of temperament and interests to suit better. I haven’t met the general yet but I feel that him and the Oldest son’w wife would’ve gotten along better or at least they have more common ground.

Unfortunately, the first wife came from a prominent family, whose father is a general, would have insisted that his daughter be the first wife who along with her husband will inherit. However, each if the sons will break up i to their own households after their parents die and split the assets. But as the oldest son I an assuming that he will inherit more.

Unfortunately with the way things are, the oldest brother has an outside mistress, and the second wife is having an affair. I wonder how Shao Chun is goinf to help he with that. With those billowy clothes they wear she can hide her pregnancy for awhile.

I also hope that the third wife will help Shao chun take down the big brother’s mistress if she ever trie to enter the Sun family.

This drama takes place during the Ming dynasty in China.

The choice that the granny made is similar to Sophie’s choice. Except that one of the children didn’t die. But the granny’s daughter probably had a horrible fate. Hopefully it can be a happy reunion for them.

Honestly I feel that the FL would’ve have the tenacity to survive. I just don’t know if the Lin family’s exiled slaves and family would’ve been branded.

In two later scenes the granny ask the FL is she was right in giving up her daughter. The first time was when the FL seemed to waver and the second was in ep 7 when the granny thought exonerating the Fl’s father was impossible.
The granny is very loyal though. I think that the only way she can justify it is that her master will bre avenged.
